A GRANDIOSE OL' ·FLAG
MARC MARTIN I OAllY PILOT
Independence Day is the ultimate day for Fritz Warren
to show off his hUinungous patriotic bclnner
By Marissa Espino, Daily Pilot
A!O-foot-by-50-foot flag rip-
pling in the warm oreeze
n the mast of Fritz WaJ-
ren's boat is not elaborate enough
for the patriot.
Red, white and blue balloons
will float from every hatch on
Warren's sailboat today, and 100
honiing pigeons will fly up into
the endless blue sky in celebra;
tion of the Fourth of July.
Warren has b~n looking
toward to participating in the Old
Glory Boat Parade, which will
wind around Newport Harbor
today.

-said the tanned and jubilant WaJ-
ren, who will also sport a custom-
"lllade, 2 1/2-foot high Uncle Sam
hat, and matching red, white and

A member of both the Newport
Harbor Elks Club and the Ameri-
can Legion Post 291, Warre n
brought out the biggest commer-
cial flag you could buy three yea.Is
ago when he bought his boat,
"On The Fritz."
And he and his flag have
become a popular local sight,
receiving enthusiastic reactions
from onlookers every time he
cruises the haJbor in his boat, d.is-
playing the grand ol' flag on spe-
cial events and occasional Sun-
days.
"The kids get ~big thrill out of
it. The little boys and girls put
their hands over their hearts and
sing 'God Bless America,'• said
Warren, who works as a contrac-

Al\hough the 50-year-old
Newport Beach resident has only
owned his boat for the last few
years, being on the water is not
new to him.
Growing up on Harbor Island,
Warren's father sailed his own
boat often. In fact, his father just
the world for the third time.
"I grew up in the water -it's in
my blood," Warren said.
Even though his dad got him
interested in sailing, displaying
the extra-large flag was Warren's
own idea.

sive flag for the sheer joy of see-
ing observers' pleased expres-
sions. He said he doesn't neces-
sarily attribute his patriotism to
his time in the military -he is siJn-
ply proud of his country.
Demonstrating his pride, War-
ren buys a new flag every yea.I and
destroys the previous one at a spe-
cial American Legion ceremony.
When not in use, the flag is stored
inside Warren's 40-foot boat.
Besides the flag, balloons and
birds, Warren recently purchased
a custom-made sail to add to his
list of patriotic regalia. The~
metrical spinnaker is also decked
out with those same symbolic
stars and stripes and will be an
added feature to his presentation.
HYou know it's Fritz on the
water when you see that flag,"
said Chailotte Ball, who is the
secretary at the American Legion
Post 291 on Balboa Peninsula,
where Warren's boat is usually
docked. "His fl ag is as big as his
boat."
American Legion auxiliary
member Anne DeVusser said
everyone on the harbor is proud
of the flag. ·u instills a thought of patrio-
tism that people don't usually feel
because it is so big,• ~he said..
"Fritz is very proud of that fla~
and we enjoy him enjoying his
boat."

Mariners Park July 4 bike

NEWPORT BEACH -For ~e
23rd year, decorated bikes will
roll, children will squeal with
delight and parents will beam at
their happy progeny at the annu-
al Mariners Park Fourth of July
Bicycle Parade.
Kids who participated when it
was a simple neighborhood
parade now bring their own chil-
dren to the event, which draws
more than 2,000 patriotic souls.
The parade was a parent-
sponsored response to the city's
lack of activities for children dur-
mg y g epe -

Local parent Jo Vandervort
vowed to create a parade to
match those of other communi-
ties, after fellow parent Carol
Blanchard mentioned \he one
he ld in Palos Verdes.
Vandervort, a city parks and
recreation commissioner,
obtained some help from the city
of Newport Beach's parks and
recreation department and orga-
nized the first parade, which con-
sisted of 50 bicycles decorated by
children.

The organizers estllrlate that
in recent years, roughly 2,000
people have shown up annually.
"We estimate the crowd by the
amount of hot dogs sold,• said
Dana Black, who has organized
the parade for the past 11 yea.rs.
Most of those attending partic-
ipate in the parade, Black said.
The parade has remained a
casual event, without a theme or
coordinated floats.
Over the years, several
changes hav~ been implemented
to accommodate the growing
number of parade onlookers.
The addition of Barnaby the

has been a big hit, participants
said. •Barnaby is the catalyst for

As a former teacher I know

longer positive with the students,
no longer a motivator. I wish I
had an opportunity to evaluate
her, although we did m,eet with
her and the principal.
But yes, it is a good idea,
especially when teachers get

ents, we really need good teach-

I don't think parents should
evaluate teachers based on the
· fact that they don't see the class-
rooms, they are not in the class-
rooms, they probably don't know
as much about teaching the sub-
ject matter as the teacher does.
I think that student evaluation
and peer evaluation and superi-
or5 evaluation is the way to go if
one should be evaluated. I have
just retired from nearly 40 yea.rs
of teaching and that is my feel-
ing.
NEIL BENNER ·

As a retired teacher I think
this is really a ridiCulous idea.
Usually the parents who com-
plain are the ones who do not do
what they sqould be doing for
their children anyway.
I feel that teachers are under
enough scrutiny as it is and I also
think that the district does a pret-
ty good job of evaluating their
teachers. Once again J think it is
a ridiculous idea.

I don't th.ink it is a good idea
to grade..tea~ers' performance
this way. I feel that if parents
have anything to say, they should
discuss it with their teacher or
the principals and not anony-
mously.
People are very sensitive to
their negative comments.
That way the classes are
being evaluated simultaneously.
If teaching practices or inabili-
ties are apparent from the teach-
ers point of view than they are
also made apparent and both
problems can be handled.

I find it interesting on this
Mnme to Grade Teacher~ that
the questionnaires are being sent
to the parents when (Superinten-
dent) Mac Bernd is quoted as
saying what we are doing is try-
ing to get feedback from those
most directly effected by our
employees.
It seems to me that our stu-
dents are most directly affected.
Especially at the high school, I
guess at the high school level it
would be more important than
the elementary, but they do have
opinions and thoughts about
things.
I don't go to school with our
daughter so r don't have a clear
understanding of how the
teacher comes across in the class
and bis or her delivery. I don't
know it the class is stimulating or
challenging. I'm not there and I
don't think any parents are.
Maybe the district could have '
passed out these questionnaires
the last week of school, had them
turned in anonymously and
saved the $12,000.

1 think evaluations of some
sort are probably in order. How-
ever, the method that they chose
to use whether it be the superin-
tendent or whoever, is ludicrous.
The mailing expense, number
one, was ridiculous. When the
kids go home they could have
taken them. No. 2, I think it is
grossly unfair that parents who
have never set foot, mor~ than
likely, in any of their children's
classes while relying strictly on
the assessment that they get sec-
ond hand through the. student is
a ridiculous way to come with a
meaningful, constructive criti-
cism of the teacher.
I just think the whole thing is
a bureaucratic bungle, probably
by somebody at the administra-
tive level who is so far removed
from the actual classroom
because of their duties. There
has got to be a better way.

Value of term limits,
God in politics deb_ate_d_
M ayor Jonn Hedges' .column
(June 10) revisits a topic
about which so.many zealots have
grown silent. The initial urge to rem~ve the Willie Browns of poli-
tics has now been tempered by
the many successors' desire to stay
in power. Interesting, isn't !fl
term limits really does: It gives us
political neophytes and guaran-
tees we'll always be stuck with
the next neophytes in line. It does-
n't have to be this way. At some
levels we have ~ fallback.
As example, look at the city.
Thank God there is an ongoing
staff such as the city manager and
so on down the line to keep a his-
tory, even a memory, of what's
been done, bow things get done,
and so on. An elected newcomer
simply cannot be expected to ·
recall earlier discussions surround-
ing issues revisited and decisions
made, let alone the proper
process.
So, I cannot help but wonder,
who operates as the city staff at
the state and national levels? Is it
the press? Or is it the career staff
person? Whom we don't get to
elect/re-elect? Who keeps all
these elected neophytes we're
guaranteed to be stuck with from
spinning their wheels too long in
the mud of discovery, from re-~
iting every issue ad nauseum
when they finally make it to the
House/Senate floor?
Given the complexity of politics
and governance, how can we vot-
ers hQpe for progress in govern-
ment if each succeeding politidan
starts back at square <S'ne?

lessons, Alvarez said. The com-
plaints are mostly from parents of
children between the ages of 6
months to 6 years, he said.
Part of the problem is children
have little body fat and their body
temperatures rise slowly, he said.
But a big factor is they are inti.mi·
dated by the water and the idea of
swimIJ>ing, he said.
Alvarez advises pa.rents to

use their bath at home, at a nor-
mal temperature, to acclimate
their child to the concept of
swimming. •no things they do at swim

ness is not such a dramatic factor
and they concentrate on things
they do in class rather than sitting
on the side shivering.•
The NeWport-Mesa Unified
School District maintains all four
pools at the high schools and con-
trols their temperatures. The tem-
peratures at all the pools were
lowered by two degrees in May
1995 to conserve energy an~ save
money, said Eric Jetta, of the dis-
trict's maintenance department.
But two months later, the tem-
perature was rlJised back to 80, he
said.
The pools are also used by
competitive swimmers, such as
water polo teams and master
swinuUn who often like the teJll-
perature even cooler, Jetta said.
Therefore, a standard tempera-
ture of 80 degrees is used for
health and comfort reasons, he
said.
"I had a mother say, 'My kid is
comfortable when they play in
the bathtub,'" Jetta said. "But of
course, that is not a fair compari-

0 h where, oh where, has
Cathy Moclcett gone?
Well, nowhere, actually.
Except maybe stuck in ladj.es'
professional golf purgatory.
While scanning the weekly
LPGA newsletter in search of
Moclcett, she was nowhere to be
found following the tour's first
eight tournaments. Ne~er made
the money-leaders list. Some
were concerned that Mockett's
bad shoulder was acting up
again. .
Ah, not to be alarmed.
Mock.ett is alive and well.
To open the LPGA Tour
season, Mockett missed the cut
in every tournament, keeping a
rather low profile.
Mock.ett, though, a Newport
Harbor High product. answered
last month in one of the LPGA .
Tour's toughest events in which
to qualify, the U.S . Women's
Open at Pine Needle Golf Club
in Southern Pines, N.C., the third
of four majors on the tour.
She finished tied for 42nd in
the n eamin SS 092 her
o y WUllll.Dgs o e season
heading into this weekend's
Jamie Farr Kroger Classic in
Ohio, which Mockett will
bypass.
So in her ninth start, Mockett
finally qualifies. She has since
missed the cut in the last three
LPGA events, in Michigan,
Minnesota and last week in
Atlantic City.
With her finish at the Open,
Mockett is currently 147th on
the LPGA money list. The top
125 automatically qualify for
next year's tour.
0
Mockett typically skips the
Ohio stop ... for two reasons: She
doesn't like playing four weeks
in a row, and secondly, Toledo,
Ohio, is where Mockett had
some bad luck as a rookie on the
LPGA Tour in 1993.
That year, as Mockett was
preparing to tee oft, her new car
was hit in the parking lot by
someone cutting a comer too
close.
"Something always happens
to rookies,~ she said. "I wasn't
even driving it. I'd just taken it
to the car wash, and the a~
da.nt in the parking lot asked i1 I
wanted to park under a tree, but
I asked him if I could park in this
end spot, which 1 did. Toledo just
happens to fall in the fifth week
0£ lbis stretch, so I'm skipping
it..
Last year, Mockett made the
cut in six of the first nine events.
1\vo yea.rs ago, tepd.initis in
her should~ threatened to end
her career.
In 1993, Mockett mined the
cut 16 times in 23 LPGA
tournaments, meriting only

them, they were beaten in their
beat by the fastest challenger,
Eaton College.
Eaton, which won the Princess
Cup last year, covered the 2,000-
meter course in 6:53.00, finishing
two boat seats ahead of Coast.
So while Eaton advances, OCC
bas been relegated to a seat in the
stands even though the next
astest heat winner-was-way-off
the pace at 7:08.00 .
"Dave said they're all pretty
disappointed, but he hopes they
will perk up by dinner time,• said
Hadden, whose son Jim was an
oarsman for OCC in 1969-70. "It's
a shame they drew a crew that
was so strong.
•One year we drew Cal
(Berkeley) in the first round and
that was the end of that one, too."
The sub-seven-minute perfor-
mance put an end-to a pretty frustrat-
mg 11 days for OCC. Grant thought
be was doing bis team a favor by
leaving early (June 22) for England
and fabled Hen1ey on the Thames.
"We'll be using a new Mat and
we'll need some time to break it
in," Grant said after the team's
final morning practis;e in the
States. "Hopefully, we'll have
everybody settled in by the time
ra~-
N ice thought, but things didn't
work out as planned. The team's
difficulty in learning how to tie
bow ties should probably have
tipped Grant off that there would
be some more problems along the
way. After all the hours of drilling,
and the six-step illustrations, one
of the guys still showed up with
his bow tie undone for the bus to
the airport.
The new boat, made by Res-
olute, was billed as being able to
take off five seconds from a good
crew's times. In another unfortu-
nate quirk, the bow was damaged
going through customs and ended
up in dry dock for a week.
"Dave wasn't complaining, but
of course it would have been nicer
to have had more practice time,•
Hadden said. "They only had four
days of practice in the new boat.
-"Tliey-enctett-up bOrrowmg a
boat for most of the week and had
some practice sessions with other
teams. In spite of everything, he
safd it all worked out better than
expected and he wasn't going to
make any excuses."
Of course all that effort and
planning for one seven-minute
ride is hard to swallow. Sort of like
the new Jurassic Park adventure
ride at Universal Studios.
It's great while you're on the
ride, but it's over all too soon.

NEWPORT BEACH -They're called
• the Newport Harbor Baseball Associa-
tion and the Newport East entries in the
Pony League classification of youth
baseball.
In reality, they are the Class of '00 at
· Newport Harbor and Corona del Mar,
~ respectively.
• tice game betw~~m the two is any indi-
cation as each girds for All-Star tourna-
ment action next week, Corona del Mar
has some work to do.
Paul Cohen's NHBA All-Stars, fresh
from a 20-2 rout of thls same foe two
days earlier, swept to a 10-2 victory at
Ensign Intermediate School as Rich
Knecht's Newport East Little All-Stars
committed suici£le with four pitchers
surrendering 15 free passes.
·rm feeling really good about this
team,• said Cohen. •And, we expect to
have Nick Langsdorf back when the
playoffs begin.•
Langsdorf did not play on Wednes-
day, still recovering from a leg injwy.
The key to their success appears to
be in the pitching department with
Scott Beerer. who turns 14 today, the
delegated starter for next Thursday's
opener at East Hills Pony League in
Anaheim against Tustin.

Cohen, whose team appeared to have a
big edge over their East Bay rivals.
The two teams are in different orga-
nizations and obviously will not meet in
any playoff format.
Blanked on one hit through five
innings, the bright spot for NELL came
on a defensive play as Britta Voegle,
who sat out the first four innings
because she was under the weather,
fired a deep strike from right field to
third base to double up the runner to
end the fifth frame.
Doubles by Mickey Lawson and
Ryan Jetton sparked a two-run NEO.
uprising in the sixth to avert the
shutout, but the damage had already
been done.
Cohen's crew struck for two runs in
the first inning • with leadoff hitter
Booth Fellers singling to right and scor-
ing on a two-bagger by Justin Jacobs,
the latter moving around to score, too,
on one of six NHBA miscues.
runs poured across on two hits and four
walks, Blake Tippet's single t<? teft the
only ball to. lea.ve the infield.
1Wo more free passes in the third
inning preceded Otto Verhulst's double
and the NHBA team was on an 8-0 roll.
Offensively Jacobs would ha~e to be
considered the star of Wednesday's
game -he came to bat four times and
scored four times.
His RBI-double in the first was fol·
lowed by three straight walks, and in
each instance he came around to score.
Chad Smith's infield single got him
across in th~ second inning; Verhulst's
double in the third drove him in 'trom
second in the third frame; and he came
round in the fifth when he walked, stole
a base, then scored on a stolen base and
ensuing throwing error.
The Newport East offense stirred in
the sixth inning when John Schrank
singled to cel'.).ter, Lawson followed with
his double, John Fenton beat out an
infield single and Jetton's two-bagger.

Ibbetson, five pounds less now
than his 6-foot-2, 185-pound
casing when he competed in the
Olympics, still gets a rush.
The '80 Rowing Club, its label
in the Head of the Charles
Regatta, had rowed each autumn
against national teams, club
boats and collegiate crews. Until
last year. •
"We finally decided to row in
the Masters (division), and we
won that easily," said Ibbetson,
who earned his bachelor's
degree in biology and his mas-..A

•Everyone looks forward to it

in the eights, because that's the
premier event, so it's the flagship

Ibbetson felt strongly about
retiring following '80 boycott, but
he had invested too many hours
of training and commitment.
Besides, he still bad the bug .
Like he does today.
"We were ready to go with a
very good boat (in 1980) and I
really feel we would have won
the silver medal," he said. #We
beat the British twice that year;~
and they won the silver medal.
H's unfortunate the political
process got in the way."
Four of the members of the '80
Rowing Club are headed this
month for the Oregon coast,
where they will cycle an
estimated 100 miles every day
for four days from the top to the·
bottom of the state.
"Cycling is like cross-training
for rowers, H Ibbetson said.
Ibbetson will always be able
to exhibit his silver from 12 years
ago, but what sits closest to his
heart is the team that was all
