High anxiety over
'High VJSibility'
I t was a great vacation ... a
golden spike, dinosaurs, rams
and bears and a tour of Seat-
tle's big attraction, the under-
ground toilet system of the
1880s.
But like all good things,
there's always the return to reali-
ty. .
And there's nothing quite like
the reality of the correspondence
of an insurance company, which
states you've been disowned.
The fact had been in my
drawer for a few weeks, and I
knew I had to come to grips with
the problem upon return.
After years and years of faith-
fully paying my bucks to in.sure
my home against fire , flood and
plague, my faithful insurance
company had informed me that I
was no longer wanted.
Why?
Because I had conunitted the
sin of residing in the state of Cal-
ifornia, that's why. The mere fact
that my insurance did not cover
earthquakes anyway, didn't
seem to matter.
All that Uijlttered was that I .
was a Californian. They didn't
even bring up the subject of
earthquake insurance, but nev-
ertheless, my homeowners insur-
ance days were numbered, and
the clock was running out.
That's OK, I thought, I don't
like them anyway. A bunch of
foreigners from the Midwest.
And I'll bet I can get a better
deal, anyway.
So I turned to my automobile
friendly AAA.
I hung the phone up in a state
of relief. ·
My costs are being halved
and the coverage is even better!
I've been with them over 10
years, I qualify! The insurance
agent will be dropping by in a
few days to wrap it upl
But a couple of days later,
some unexpected reallty set in
as the phone rang.
There was a problem. In
researching my application, it
was learned that I was a sports
writer. That's right, a dreaded
sports writer.
They didn't mind it if I was a.
Californian, but a sports writer
for a newspaper was far too
risky.
I told him I wasn't really a
sports writer anymore, but a
sports editor.
Writer ... editor ... whatever
with a newspaper, stamped me
as an untouchable and the deal
was off. I had "High Visibility,"

The blond teen dressed in jeans and a

He sold her the coolers anyway.

shoppers rushed the counter with badges

SHE IS
Nancy E. Williams, who is the
owner of Tea & Sympathy, a
ijritish ·shop in Costa Mesa that
specializes in afternoon and Vic-
torian tea.
LONDON TRADmON
Born in Missouri, Williams
has been a resident of Costa
Mesa for 27 years. She and her
husband first came to California
.after he received a job transfer
Williams bought Tea & Sym-
pathy in 1984 from an English
woman who owned the shop for
12 years.
"I used to own a British fish
and chips restaurant,• Williams
said, "But when the lease was
up, I decided to buy this place
mstead. •
Williams has been to London
five or six times, but tea isn't
automatically what she likes
most about the royal country.
"I like the traditions and the
building architecture the most,•
she said. "Everything in London
has a history to it, unlike here
where things change so fast.
•And, of course, the people
are very friendly and polite over
there, too,• Williams said.
CELTIC BOOKS
Williams and her husband
have been collecting Scottish,
Irish and Welsh books for as
long as she can remember.
_. "What we have here in the
store is nothing," she said,
motioning to the shelves nearby.
Hour collection is up to 3,000
books."
Going to Gaelic and Celtic
book signings is something she
and her husband enjoy.
"To find books on such topics
can be very. difficult,• Williams
said. ·w e make it a point to
bring our collection around for
people to look at and buy from.•
Many of the books and other
products in her shop, are import-
ed from Britain, England and
Scotland, she said.
TEA TOTALER
Most people who know any-
thing at all about tea get high
tea and afternoon tea mixed up,
Williams said.
•Afternoon tea is like a snack
between meals,• she said. ·na-
ditionally, it is a feminine get-
together where secrets are
shared between eating scones
and finger sandwiches .
"Today, even men come in for
afternoon tea occasionally,"
Williams said.
High tea is more of a substan-
tial meal of meats and cheeses,
she said, like the ones English
mine and factory worke~ used
to consume daily.
"It has been said that when
the workers used to go to the
nearest tea room at about 4 p.m .
in England, they sat. on high
stools," Williams said, "Which is
how 'High Tea' got its name.•
Tea & Sympathy itself mod-
eled its name after the central
reason English women liked to
have tea in the first place, she
said.
•After a housewife would do
the washing, ironing, cleaning
and marketing, she would meet
a friend for tea," Williams said.
"A cup of tea and a friend's sym-
pathetic ear is all she'd need.•
