J ason Bond started playing
the bagpipes when he was
12 years old because be
thought be would like it better
than physical education.
Within six months, he bad
moved beyond the chanter -a
pipe without a bag that is the
first step .to playing the bagpipes
-to full-fledged ba'gpipes.
Now, at 50, the Costa Mesa .
resident is a mortgage broker
by day and a bagpipe player at
night and on weekends.
Not only is Bond-a tall
man with silvery hair and a
mustache -the pipe major for
the San Clemente Scots, a pipe
and dnun band, he also gives
bagpipe lessons.
Donning a standard military
pleated kilt, a white unif onn
shirt and a Prince Charlie jack-
et along with thick wool ~
and ghillie brogues -leather
boots that lace around the
ankles -Bond sets out alone
and with his band to play at
weddings, parties, funerals and
other events.
The wfilonn, while it doesn't
have a special significance, has
become the bagpiper's charac-
ter regalia.
"It means that we don't do
rap," he said.
The Australian native's fasci-
nation with bagpipes began
when he was about 9 years old
while he was in the hospital
recovering from an eye opera-
tion. While out on the balcony
one day, he heard someone
playing the pipes and was
intrigued.
"I guess the seeds of my
desire for being a piper were
sown at 'that early age," he said.
Today, his repertoire of •sev-
eral hundred tunes• includes
wedding marches, memorial
songs, reels and jigs.
And that's with an 18-year
break in the middle of his pip-
ing years. Bond played the
pipes in civilian bands while at
Adelaide University, but gave
up the pipes for other pursuits.
After traveling extensively,
he went back to Australia, got
married and immigrated to the
United States in 1982.

great.grandmother .
reaches goal by
becoming citizen
A t 92 years of age, my
great-grandmother has
seen and done a lot of
things in her life.
But there was on~ thing -
one goal -she could never
seem to accomplish.
Until now.
Earlier this month my great-
grandmother, or "Welita" as we
like to call her, became a U.S.
citizen. She did it with little fan-
fare. Only a few in the family
knew before 1t became official.
And she did it with little
preparation, studying a sample
test 1ust three days beforehand.
But at least she did it.
•For such a long time I have
wanted to be a citizen," my
Wellta told me in Spanish one
recent afternoon as we sat m the
living room of her small two-
bedroom house in Ontario. "It
made me very happy."
My Welita -her name is
Eudocia Ramirez -came to the
Uruted States in 1924 with her
husband and their young son.
They stayed for rune years
bc>fore returning to Mexico to
v1s1t relatives.
Dunng that visit, the G reat
Depression rut th.is country so
the fdJTUly decided to slay put.
Back in Mexico, Welitd's fami-
ly grew to include 13 children.
Tiu.> older ones returned to the
Uruted States on their own to
<ilrtrt new lives and new families.
Rut when my gr~at-grandlather,
who was a policeman 10 MeXJco,
wrts killed m the line of duty, rel·
allves helped Welita and her
younger children come back to
the United States.
She supported herself and her
family by clearung houses and
other various jobs. She never
remarried and later buried two
of her children.
Today, she still lives on her
own, spencting her days baby-
sitting her grandchildren and
great-grandchildren.
And that's why after some 42
years of living here, Welita said
she finally -only finally -
found the time to become a cib.·
zen.
She told me some of the ques-
bons she was asked during her
test. Like, how many stars are on
the flag? How many stripes?
Whal were the 49th and 50th
states? Who was the hrst presi-
dent?
Welita still knows the answers
and gives them to me after each
question. She missed two, but
doesn't remember what the
those questions were.
She remembers she was
among about 5,000 people who
were sworn in as citizens that
day. Some were Japanese, some
were Cuban and many were
Mexican like her.
•And we were all waving our
little flags,· she said, laughing.
Although I'm sure Wellta will
return to Mexico now and then
to see relatives, her roots seem to
be securely attached to U.S. soil.
She bas even let her children
know she wants to be burled
pere.
After all, this is her home.
:A.ad she has no plans to leave it
illDY time soon.

Tio years ago, five freshmen
epped on campus at Newport
arbor High and were dubbed
by local press, the -"Fab Five,"
Great things were expected from
Audra Adams, Kristen Case, Chelsea
Godbey, Sarah Barker and Amanda
Collopy.
They delivered early, helping the
Sailors snap Peninsula's 122-match
winning streak that first year. They also
helped Newport Harbor into the CIP
Division I finals two years ago, where
they lost a rematch with Peninsula, and
the semifinals last year, where they lost
to eventual champion Corona del Mar.
Natalie Braverman, who won the
Costa Mesa Junior Open by defeatirig
Caylan Leslie, one of Corona del Mar's
top players last season, is expected to .
make an immediate impact m sIDgles
th.is season.
"Her skills speak for themselves,•
Coach Fletcher Olson said. "She is an
excellent player and athlete and should
fare very well in her first year. She is an
all-arourid complete player, way beyond
her age."
Braverman is Just 14.
The Fab Five are now juniors and.
along with the help of seruor Erika Palm
and junior Allison Schneider, have
multiple roles this season.
As some of the top tenrus talent in
Orange County, they will once again be
at the front of a strong Newport Harbor
team. They will also help gwde a group
of four freshmen who are, much like
their predecessors, expected to make dJ1
~ed.iate impact and help the Sailors
battle for the Sea View League title with
the Sea Kings and perennial contender
Woodbridge.
"Given tbe great deal o{ e1.P,enence
they bave and the talent we have
coming in, we will be well-prepared for
a tough league schedule,• Olson said.
Palm, the oldest and most
experienced player on the team, will be
the team captain tlus season
"Erika has great leadership ability,"
Olson said . "She will be a great help to
the younger singles and doubles players
as they look to the older players for
support.•
One reason Olson is confident a bout
the upcoming' season is the progress the
• Fab Five• have made over the past two
seasons.
Adams and Case were already
accomplished doubles players who dS

Adams recently v.r1ruung the Costa Mesa

Godbey, Barker and Collopy have
di o worked hard to strengthen all
aspects of their games. ·All hve have
raised their level of pldy dramatically,•
Olson said "They have a good work
ethic and are good fnends off the court •
Fnendship is one of the key aspects of
Olson's program. Olson organizes team
runners and makes sure that players on
all three tenms teams (the other two: N
and frosh-soph) wear their uniforms on
match days.
As d kickoff to fall practice, Olson will
lake the players to La Jolla so that they
can gel tQ know the newcomers and
have the first few practice sessions
Without onlookers.
To Olson, fnend~hip off the court
helps her players play as a "team• on
the court • lt adds to the camaraderie
of the kids,• Olson said "The girls
(retunung players) do everything
together and have lots of fun "
This "team" attitude helps prepare
Sa1lors tenrus players for a future in
college tennis, where individuabty lS not
tolerated ln the past three years, at least
tour of Newport Harbor's graduates have
gone on to play for NCAA Divis10n 1-A

Olson believes that this philosophy
will help the inconung freshmen, all of

freshmen Megari Hawklns, Kelly Nelson

MAJOR RECONSTRUCTION .FOR VANGUARDS COLLEGE MEN 'S
SOCCER PREVIEW • sec has 14 new players.
COSTA MESA -Southern Cahlor-
nia College is one of the smallest
schools in the Golden State Athletic
Conference, but was able to remain
competitive in men's soccer uritil last
season when a string of injuries
thinned. out the number of available
players on the bench. The Vanguards
finished 7-13.
Realizing a new approach was
needed, head coach Dave McLeish
recruited a young team that he
believes will be competitive my mid-
season and will challenge for the
GSAC title at the start of next season.
"It will take a while before they
mesh together,• McLelsh said •But
they are all working hard in a posibve
direction towards the future.•
Only six players return to a team
that has seven sophomores and nine
freshmen.
Of the returners, sophomores Matt
Resor and Matt Sarinas will play an
important role. Resor, the starting
goalie in 1997, was the team MVP last
season. But Sarinas is challenging for
the starting job, giving the Vanguards
depth at the position
"Sannas played really well for the
La JoUd Nomads (a club team) Uus
summer,·· McLeish said. "He's push-
mg Resor for the stdrting JOb, but both
are really solid in goal.•
Deplh is a common theme on tlus
year's team as Mcleish recruited

SCC's top scoring threats. •(l's hard to

Cal trans (California Department of Transportation) and the Orange.County Transportation Authority (OCTA), in
coopera tion with the City of Costa Mesa, are planning local access improvements along Interstate 405 (1-405)
between Bristol Street and the Costa Mesa Freeway (SR-55). The proposed project includes:
• separating the southbound SR-55 to northbound 1-405 connector ramps from the northbound 1-405 Bristol
Street off-ramp;
• adding new on- and off-ra mps a t Anton Boulevard and Avenue of the Arts;
• adding a new carpool/HOV on-ramp from northbound Bristo) Street to southbound 1-405;
• separating the ~outhbound 1-405 to northbound SR-55 connector ramps from the Bristol Street on-ramps;
• adding soundwalls.
Cal trans and OCT A have studied the effects this project may have on the environment and prepared an Initial
Study/Envi ronmental Assessment (IS/EA). Although minor impacts are to be expected, the IS/EA indicates
tha t the project w ill not signi.ficantly impact the surrounding area. Project impacts include covering a portion of
the Airport Flood Co ntrol Channel, removing 250 to 300 parking stalls at Metro Center, acquiring 15 feet from
the permanent easement of the Orange County Sanitation Dishict along the south side of 1-405, removing and
replacing the existing southbound 1-405 noise barrier near residential properties, and removing and replacing
lc1ndscaping. Thi s no ti ce is to advise you of the availability of the study and a public hearing. The IS/EA and
projec t maps are available for your review at the following locations and" can also be obtained through OCT A:

The bidding:
WFSI' NORTif EAST SOUTH •• 11\J Dbl Pus Pass Pus Pus
Opening lead: I<lng of <:>
The defenders usually are declar-
"er's mortal enemies, eager to seize
any opportunity to. do harm to the
contract. But once in a while their
unwilling cooperation can be enlist·
ed.
North had as linle as the law allows
for a vulnerable takeout double. With
values for an opening bid, South's
jump 10 game in spades was automat·
le.
West led the king of hearts. The
opening bid was ~ood news and bad
-bad because 11 meant that every
• important card was going to be badly
placed; good, because West might
have a bit too tnuch for the defender's
well·being.
