• EDITOR'S NOTE: This column is the
first of two parts.
Whenever I walk down
Ocean Boulevard in Corona del
Mar and look down on Big
Corona I mutter a small vote of
thanks to Mary Burton. Were it
not for Mary, instead of o.ne of
the most beautifuJ beaches of
Southern California crowded
with sun worshipers I would be
looking down on paved streets,
curbs and the roofs of houses.~
hundreds and hundreds of hous-
es all crowded together on 30-
foot lots.
Of COW'Se, Mary Burton didn't
create Bag Corona. Nature, with
a helping hand frotn man, made
Big Corona in its present form.
In 1927, I worked at the old
Corona del Mar bathhouse,
which was located at the harbor
entrance of Big Corona in what
is now known as Pirate's Cove.
From that cove a great stretch of
white sand extended down the
bay almost to the future Coast
Guard station and across the bay
almost to Balboa Peninsula.
I only remember going over
to Big Corona a couple of times
because the beach was covered
with some kind of thorny bush
that made walking difficult.
About the only people l saw
were farmers who were catching
corbina -the most delicious
surf fish in existence -stacking
them up like cordwood and tak-
ing them to their farms for fertil-
izer. The beach itself was rather
narrow, about the size of the
present parking lot and conces-
sion stands.
Then in 1928 the city put in
the present concrete jetty, 800
feet of concrete sticking out into
the ocean. It was supposed to
make the harbor entrance safe
for boating. It failed. Off that jet-
ty, small waves became big
waves. The harbor entrance
became a surfer's dream and a
boater's nightmare.
Then, during the 1935-36
dredge, the city sucked up all
that beautiful white sand in the
bay and deposited it on Big
Corona, extending the beach out
to its present water line, the end
of the 800 foot concrete jetty. Of
course in sucking up all that
sand from the bay, the city also
sucked up a bunch of lots
together with streets, curbs, et
al. in front of what is now China
Cove, making landlocked lots
into bayfront lots and submerg-
ing waterfront lots under about
30 feet of salt water.
Back to Mary Burton.
Mary Burton has been around
a long time.
ln 1909 her mother, Mary
Everett, built the Ocean Boule-
vard house in which Mary Bur-
ton still lives, a grand old all·
redwood house that I can
remember as being one of the
very few houses in old Corona
del Mar when I first came.
Past forward to the 1930s.
Mary Burton was an attorney
practicing in Pasadena but with
her summer home in Corona del
Mar.
Big Corona was then owned
by Citizens Bank of Los Ange-
les. I think Citizens Bank had
foreclosed on the original Coro-
na del Mar company, my
employer at the Corona del Mar
bathhouse. Anyway, the bank
owned Big Coronat from the
. water's edge to the bottom of the
bJuff.
About that time the state had
enacted a parkland bill ottering
matching grants to cities for the
acquisition of public beaches.
Izzy Andrews, another of this
city's immortals, was interes~
in getting the dty to acquire Big
Corona by a land swap that
would have cost the city noth·
mg. It was a pretty complex
deal, but Iµy wu great at com-
plex deals just as long u the

NEWPORT BEACH -City .
officials said Monday they will
begin looking into their options to
help save the Port Theatre m
Corona del Mar if a new operator
cannot be found for the 50-year-
old movie house.
Councilman Dennis O'Neil
said he would like the city staff to
find out what theater owner
Steve Burnham is planrung for
the building now that Landmark
Theatre Corp. has relinquished
its operating lease.
U Burnham is able to find
another theater operator to
replace Landmark -which he
said he is trying to do -O'Neil
swd there may be no need for aty
involvement.
But if not, the city staff will
bring back a report on the city's
choices.
Several concerned residents
spoke -at the City Coun~ meet-
ing during open public com-
ments. They included former Port
employee Maggie Sullivau, who
has gathered 1,600 signatures to
save the old theater
HI can't bear to see the build-
ing tom down, and I think this is
a great chance for Newport
Beach to capitalize on a historic
place," Sullivan said.
Resident Shima Soffer said she
recently returned from a trip to
Europe and expenenced ·culture
shock" when she found out Port
Theatre had closed.
"I'm hoping that if not as a the-
ater, you will continue this as
some sort of creative outlet," she
said.

Attorney William Bollard of

resident was arrested with his
father, Eugene McClung, and
first ma te Noah Bailey on Aug. 11
by Mexican authorities in
Cozumel aboard their 145-foot
yacht, the Rapture.

boat. Gun-running ch~es were
dropped against the lder
McClung and Batley on Wednes-

but Scott McClung remains in

McClung's attorneys have said
that their client could be sen-

He was disabled by a stress-
related anxiety disorder after last

Councilwoman Jan Debay and
Councilman Denrus O'Neu also
said they are in the dark about the
incident Glover alluded to. Coun-
,cilmen John Noyes and Tom
Thomson did not return calls.
Councilman s)ohn I ledges was
not available.
.. Murphy said he is not aware of
.any incident that would Wdrrant

Newport Beach, city manager for
the past 6 112 years.

rant it, but if any council member -. .

have nothing to lude."
Murphy's abrupt resignation -
coming one day after the closed.-
session evaluation and without
another job lined up-was never
explained and has caused some
outra.ge in the community
because of the secreq.
Most City Hall ~atchers and
others have speculated that Mur-
phy's resignation· had to do with
personal confliots with council
members, differing political
philosophies or a feeling that
Murphy Wa$-1 just Jed up with
being attack6d by certain council
members ip public session. . .
Others have said it may have ·
had something to do with the bat-
tl.e for a commercial airport at the
El Toro Marine Corps Air Station,
the way funds were allocated m
this year's budget or fnction over
business vs resident issues.
But Glover's comments seem to
point to a single incident that
caused Murphy to resign or be
forced to resign by a ma1ority of
the council. .
One source claims Murphy's
resignation was related to h1s
handling of the proposed lease of
city-owned boat slips in Lido
Marina Village. Mur.phy deliber·
ately hid a first ap(>raiSal of the
slips from the council and then
manipulated a second appraisal
conducted by Richard Fuller to
ensure it favored the developer
enough to make the deal work,
the S<>urce ~aid.
But that report was disputed by
almost everyone i.nvolved m the
lease -including Murphy, Fuller,
Edwards, oty staff, developer LJR
Lido Partnerships, and the owner
of Lldo Marina Village
Fuller, who is a planrung com-
missioner, said Murphy never
even spoke to him about the mat·
ter until after the final appra!Sal
was completed and said no one
told him to fix the results.
•My direction was to do the
appraisal -no one directed. me
bow to do it,• .Fuller said.
Murphy said he found out
about the inco'mplete appraisal in
a staff meeting about two weeks
before the •June 24 City Council
meeting, during which the 50-
