It's time · Crystal Cove dwellers got heave-ho I doubt there were many people who were surprised to learn the cottage dwellers who have inhabited the beach at Crystal Cove for the last eon or so recently got one more reprieve from the state. I know I wasn't. It was three years ago this month that, as a reporter, I vis- ited Crystal Cove to do a story on the impending eviction of the residents there. At the time, their 10-year lease with the state had expired, and government offi- cials were saying "time to start packing." "Make us," said the cove folks. Well, state officials caved in then, and three years later they are caving in again. Today, Crystal Cove contin- ues to be what amounts to a few. Sure, the cove's allure is easy to understand. It's a beautiful place to live. If I lived there, 1 tony dodero probably wouldn't want to leave either. But I'm sure most people feel that way when they visit a state park. Imagine if someone said, "I sure like the view from Yosemite's half dome. I think . . " Or how about if somebody wanted to erect a mansion on the cliffs overlooking the Grand Canyon? Facts by Paul Frech SERVICE a REPAIR GERMAN• SWEDISH JAPANESE AUTOMOBlµIS TORQUE AND HORSEPOWER Both car buyers and car enthusiasts. often take the propulsive terms "torque" and "horsepower" into account when jud Ing an automobile. What are Torque Is a twisting force, while horsepower is an amount of work performed over time. As a measure of the twisting force of the crankshaft, torque is given in pound-feet, which may be illustrated by thinkin~ of an arm one foot long holding a one- pound weight on its end. Note that nothing has to move tor torque to be exerted. Horse- power on the other hand, is a measure of work performed over time. By definition, one horsepower is equal to 33,000 foot-pounds/minute. Thus. horse- • ower Is direct! related to torque y t e equation "horsepower equals torque x rpm/5252." Simply put, by raising 33,000 pounds one foot In a minute, one horsepower is generated. The faster the rate (speed) at which torque is applied, the higher the horsepower. HIN'n Torque is essential for good acceleration, while horse wer Is critical to top POWER PLAY If an engine shows a loss of power that Is not linked to routine causes, a shift in valve timing due to a partially f alled cam belt may be suspected. The function of the cam belt is to maintain a fixed relationship between the crankshaft and the camshaft (which revolves to open the engine's intake and exhaust valves) at all times. In the event that some of the teeth are worn off the belt, it may change the position of the crankshaft relative to the camshaft to reduce engine compression and power. If the cam belt has stretched or the belt tensioner Is lmpropef1y adjusted, the cam belt can Jump on the cam sprocket to alter the relationship between the crank- shaft and the camshaft. If a direct check of the valve timing confirms that the cam belt haS stretched or become broken It ahould be replaced lmmed~. By Richard Dunn, Daily Pilot C hris Ceding decided to become a water polo lifer about the same time he rea.fized he knew as much about the sport as any coach. So he became one. "I would say, what I lack in physical strength, I make up for ln know-bow," Oedin said da ore e was s ul to shove off to Atlanta for the 1996 Olympic Games. Oeding, former Corona del Mar High standout, learned of his appointment to the '96 Atlanta Games in late June. "It was a stressful process. I think it would be presumptuous for me to say I was secure," Ceding said of bis initial Olympic selection, in which be will be counted upon to provide counterattack strength for the U.S. Oeding, a starter on the ' national team for the last two years, is also the head water polo coach at Orange Coast College on an interim basis, filling in for Don Watson (two-year sabbatical). "It's a job I would like, whether it's at Coast or any other community college," said Oeding, who hopes to remain in water polo for as long as some of PONY PLAYOFFS Newport knocked out, 5-4 • Dana Point scores in bottom of ·the seventh to eliminate NHBA entry. EAST AN'AHEIM -Newport Harbor PONY All-Stars (13-14) were eliminated from District Dana Point scored in the bottom of the seventh to snap a 4-all situ- ation and won, 5-4. Dana Point broke open a pitcher's duel in the bottom of the fourth with a three-run outburst, and added another marker in the fifth to take a 4-2 lead after the Newport Harbor Baseball Associ- ation entry had scored three in the top of the fifth. Paul Cohen's Newport nine responded with two in the fifth when Chad Smith worked a lead- off walk and advanced to second on a passed ball. Scott Perkins then ripped a double to score Smith. Pinch-hit- ter Matt Cohen followed with a single to center to score Perkins. Otto Verhulst, however, saw bis long drive to left speared on a leaping catch by Dana Point's Darren White to negate a poten- tial RBI. A critical infield error account- ed for Dana Point's single tally in the fifth and it proved to be one of the fatal moments for Newport in its bid to stay alive. Newport Harbor rallied with two more runs in the top of the sixth to tie the game at 4-C . Nick Langsdorf, who homered in the first tournament game, reached first on an em>r. Scott Beerer singled down the third base line to move Langsd.orf to second. A pickoff play caught Langs- dorf off 1eCOnd base, then Beerer stole second and advanced to third on a base hit by Justin Jacobs, the latter taking second on the throw. Beerer wu thrown out at the plate on a Chad Smith grounder, then Scott Perkins walked to load the bales. Z2J the olympiad series his mentors, like John Vargas, Corona del Mar's coach since 1983, a formei: Olympian himself ('92 Barcelona) and an assistant coach ·on this year's Olympic team under Rich Corso. "Golden West has had a monopoly on water polo for the last five to 10 years, so it's kind of challenge,• ~· ' ~ .. ": Oedlng Oedin added of last ear's maugur season as 's coach, when the Pirates finished 11-17-1 (5-7 in the Orange Empire Conference) and lost in the first round of the Southern California Regional playoffs to Palomar, 12-9, on Nov. 8. Because of injuries, Ceding didn't begin to show flashes of pool greatness until May in the beginning phase of the team's three-stop exhibition tour, which concluded June 23 when Team USA finished in fifth place in a tournament in Rome. "I don't know if it's a relief, knowing·J made the team, but it's definitely something I have thougbtaboutsincelstarted playing the game," Oeding said, after learning be had earned a spot on the 13-man team. "I wanted to plqy in high school, then play at a good college, then play in the Olympics. A dream fulfilled is ·. ' !> satisfaction. A lot of people don't see their dreams fulfilled, but I've been lucky. I have." One thing's for certain: Starting on the U.S. Olympic water polo team looks pretty good on a coaching resume. Ceding, a three-time All-CIF Southern Section performer for Vargas' Sea Kings, including CIF Pla er of the Year laurels bis senior year in 1988 -the school's second of back-to-back CIF titles when Oeding was around -has plenty of reason to smile these days. He has a chance to be one of the best players on this year's team, after coming back from a serious shoulder injury, a broken left hand and a broken right hand. "I call him one of our big C's: Chris Duplanty, Chris Hwnbert and Chris Ceding. Those three, in general, control this team," Vargas said. Shortly after his return this year, Oeding began stepping it up. The U.S. team, according to Corso, is better with the 6-foot-1, 185-pound driver in the pool, the smallest player on the team. "I've had three injuries, so I figured I wouldn't have any more," Ceding said of his recent climb as one of the team's scoring leaders. D Oeding, who in four seasons at Cal led the Bears to NCAA championships every year except one (his freshman year), missed last year's World Cup because of a broken hand. That came after missing parts of 1994 because of another broken band. Prior to that, Oeding had surgeons carve up his right shoulder in Sept. 1993, because of a pinched nerve and rotator cuff problems. In a dozen exhibition games, Oeding's game decided to take a chance and, since healthy again, become a team leader for Team Tenn., Germany and Italy. "I couldn't say that four years ago," Corso said. "I've been watching Chris in all of his years at Corona del Mar High and Cal, and ·I felt fortunate to be able to coach him one year on the U.S. national junior team. •But that shoulder surgery really worried me. But, he has really-progressed in the last 10 months. We've added one more significant part of our offensive game, but more importantly is bis role as a leader out there ." Oe,,ding, who left fo'r Atlanta the day after Independence Day, claims to be in the best shape of his life. And since he has returned from physical problems and made the U.S. Olympic team, it's no wonder why 2000 doesn't even cross bis mind. "l hadn't even thought about it," Oeding said of the 2000 Sydney Ga.mes. "It'll take that I 11 I H <, \ 11 I 1 > I I I I ( I \ \ 1 I ' Water polo ATtANTA July 1 g.Aug. 4 when it comes." It's also no wonder -now that Oeding's a coach -that his relationship has changed with Vargas, who has known Oeding since he played in the Corona del Mar Junior Program. "We're at the same level now," Vargas said. "He's definitely a student of the game, and offensively, he's one of the best drivers in the world, and I think he brings like a calming in the water to the team. He's so in control, so aware of what's going on." And what Oeding lacks in physical strength isn't necessary in coaching. \\ <>\I I· :'\. .
