When it comes to rib-sticking, nothing beats fair food
W hat is it about fried com
bread and hot dogs that
tastes so good? Is there an
addictive additive in the batter?
Or is it simply that the two flavors
naturally blend well together, like
butter and jelly?
Whatever it is, I love com dogs,
which was one food I was determined
to devour at the Daily Pilot news-
room's annual Eat-Your-Way-
Through-The-Fair Day this year.
We began our digestive journey
into the world of fried foods near the
pony ride attraction, the stale stable
smells not helping our appetites.
But we were determined to stuff
ourselves nonetheless.
Our first objective was to reo:>n the
area for a variety of edible food. We
weren't picky. Barbecue, fish, hot
dogs, gyros. It didn't matter.
Food is big business at the fair. Last
year fairgoers spent nearly $3.4 mil-
lion on food and beverage -apart
from beer -during the 17-day festivi-
ties.
We had slightly less than that to
spend.
After carefully inspecting the slew .
of food stands for about 10 minutes,
we decided to expedite our search
and split up -more ground covered.
Mindful of the barbecue with-
drawals rve undergone since my last
visit to Alabama, I headed straight to
the Chuck Wagon, a large eating area
MY'P"SS

that projected wonderful, smoky
smells and offered everything from
pork ribs to beet sandwiches to chicken.
At noon Thursday, I had to wait
about 10 minutes for my barbecue
chicken dinner -halt a chicken,
sauce, barbecue beans, cole slaw and
com bread for S/.75.
I rejoined my .cuisine-gouging bud-
dies at a table to the center of the fast-
food fest between main thoroughfare
and the midway. Newport Beach
reporter Carolyn Miller was waiting at
the table, her greasy com dog already
half devoured.

But my barbecue craving wasn't

Carolyn returned from the grease

what looked like fried fish with gravy.

com -my favorite grub of the day
(considering I didn't get a bite of the
com dog). The condiment bar next to
the stand contained the usual butter
and salt, but included a wide array of
other tasty additives such as Tabasco
sauce, jalapeno sauce, chili powder
and lemon juice.
All I needed were the toothpicks.
Before waddling out the fair gates,
we unanimously decided to make one
last stop at the dessert stand facing
the Tunes Heritage Stage.
Marissa took on a strawberry sun-
dae ($3.50) while Carolyn ordered
non-fat chocolate and vanilla soft ice
cream in a waffle cone ($3), which she
finished before we passed the kiddie
rides.
1 don't think my colleagues had a
chance at my chocolate frO'ZeD banana
with nuts ($2.25), which was delidous,
but melted quickly in the hot sun.
The one thing we learned: the fair
isn't the place to eat if you're watching
your weight, but it is a tasty-yet
expensive -annual s'P~urge.
And I'll be back this weekend to
get my com dog.

Annual blood drive
proves successful
The Newport Beach Fire and
Marine Department collected a
record amount of blood Wednes-
rl.ay during its annual drive, ruth
cials said.
Lifeguards and residents
donated 59 pints for the Red
Cross at lifeguard headquartefS
on the Newport Pier, said Fire and
Marine Lt. John Blauer.
"It's an all-time record for us,"
Blauer said.
The total amount of usable
blood was seven pints more than
Newport's record of 52 pints set in
1994. Last year, 48 pints were col-
lected.
Only one pint collected this
year was unusable. It did not pass
a screening.
Fire and Marine Lt. Jim Turner
said an estimated three to four
people can benefit from every
pint.
•These guys are out rescuing
people and they come and donate
and help people in a different
way,• Turner said.
The blood drive was part of a
nationwide effort known as Life-
guards for Life. It included other
nearby agencies including Hunt-

Child's play is music ~o my ears . .
E verythlng ls relaUve. If a
child stands at the kitchen
sink recklessly banging
utensils against the counter and
splashing dishwater aimlessly,
chances are, he's going to get
into trouble.
However, tl that child does
the same thing on stage to a
packed audience who is paying
upwards of $35 per ticket to
watch him do it, chances are, .
he's going to get a standing ova-
tion.
I enjoyed just such an exhibi-
tion Tuesday night at the
Orange County Performing Arts
Center during a 90-rninute pro-
duction of Stomp, an eight-
member percussion troupe that
uses common household objects
to create uncommon synchro-

Without benefit of melody or
dialogue, this boldly e nergetic

and dust rags, banana peels and
zippo lighters, oil drums and
cardboard boxes. In other
words, everything and the

It was child's play, really, with
just a bit of rehearsal.
Sure, 1 could spot up on the
stage that annoying guy who
used to sit behind me in class

They might use the hose to

that have drifted apart in the
mall-cr:o.zed, Nintendo-bespot-
ted 90s, • states Brad Lemley m
an article I recently tead regard-
ing raising children on a frugal
~~Jet. Citing an East Coast f · y of eight who have
become somewhat famous for
their effective economic strate-
gies, Lemley observes that.
·cheap fun is still the best fun
and that, conversely, in the mod-
em toy-crammed, cable-ready
child's world. true enjoyment is
surprisingly scarce.•
Scarce enough, in fact, that
we are willing to pay a hand-
some fee to watch other grown-
up kids have a good time on
stage sweeping sawdust around
with the ball of their foot or jam-
.ming on hubcaps.
So, now, am I willing to let
my boys strap oil drums to the
soles of their shoes and stomp
around the driveway in the
name of pure tactile fun?
Well, if it'll get the trash oui
on time, I suppose I'm open to
negotiation.

and attention to more productive
and happy endeavors. In any
event, within 12 hours the media
will be reduced to callous inter-

flood of memories came
rushing in when I first
ecud of the TWA jetliner
that went down off the coast of
Long Island, N.Y.
Not only that I was born on
the island, in nearby Hempstead,
but the similarity to an incident
from my high school days in
northern Vtrginia.
It started one rainy weekend
as my parents and I were watch-
ing a football game.
My mom was making ~pcorn
when the bulletin flashed that a
TWA jetliner had gone down at
Dulles Airport -just seven miles
from our home in Sterling.
My dad, who will be cele-
brating tus 50th year in the
tre nches for Associated Press in
January, was unmediately on
the phone to one of his contacts
at Dulles tracking down the
information.
As in Wednesday's TWA crash
of Flight No. 800 bound for Paris,
the init.Jal information was
s~etchy. After finding out the
plane had crashed in the foothills
coming into Dulles, not at Dulles,
my dad called the Washington
bureau where he was the man-
aging ectitor dwing the Nixon
years telling them he was going
to try and find the plane.
With the all-news station on
the radio, and my mom and I
crammed into a Vega station
wagon armed with various maps
of the area's country roads, we
were rn the middJe of the mist-
enshrouded rolling hills of the
Commonweath's Hunt Country
looking for the crash site.
On the back way into Lees-
burg, the first Capitol of the
South before being permanently
moved to Richmond, we got the
news the jetliner had gone down
near Mount Weather.
We dldn't know 1t at the time,
but Mount Weather was a mili-
tary mstallation that would be
.. Jim
waiters
one of the sites the PreSident
would be taken to in case of a
nuclear attack.
The turn-off was only two
miles away and we ended up
being passed~ugh a tempo-
rary road block with the first
emergency vehicles heading to
the scene.
Hanging back, we kept con-
tact with the eerily glowing
lights with the whaling sirens
that became muffled as they
wound their way up into the
cloud cover.
l ean still remember reaching
the scene and seeing the tail
section with the TWA logo bro-
ken against a boulder on the
inner side of the road climbing
up the side of the mountain. It
was snapped like a toothpick
from the rest of tlie plane.
The smell of fuel and burning
flesh assaulted the nostnls as we
got out of the car. A wide
swatch of pin oaks and sugar
maples were sheared as if by a
paper cutter rising from the val-
ley IUld descending into the cliff
side.
The eeriest part of the scene,
was knowing that 98 people -
all of those aboard -were scat-
tered along with the fuselage
(7 1 -t) 7 54-6404
'1 I\' l\ll:;, I' 't .tr, 1n Or 111:.:1 I l!lHl \
starting jusf 20 feet froin the
edge of the road. The tail section
was the largest piece left intact.
It was hard to acce,Pt that Just
minutes before those passengers
had been.happily homeward-
bound to Ohio after spending the
Thanksgiving weekend with
loved ones.
I won't describe the scene fur-
ther, but rescue workers could
not hide their tears or the frustra-
tion of their gruesome cleanup
tasks which reached full-force a
day later when the rain clouds
lifted.
After getting information to
the scene, my dad stopped at ~
house along the road and filed
his first story. I watched him
calmly dictating off the top of his
head while glancing at notes and
painting the scene.
0 ur next stop was the tempo-
rary morgue being set up at
the base of the mountain. It did-
n't take long for the black body
bags to start filling the school
gymnasium where medical per-
sonnel worked in vain to identify
the remains.
Among all the carnage, I
watched my dad go about his
business. Not intrusively bullying
his way as many do, but picking

class reduction program -signed
by Gov. Pete Wllson last week as
part of the state budget -and put
presswe on local school officials to
move on the project.
"I have a child going into first
grade at Andersen this fall," said
parent Angela Kraus, who is
belp1.ng to organize the parents'
committee. "I definitely have a
vested interest in what happens
here."
The new budget provides
interested school districts with
$650 per student to help reduce
bulging class sizes to 20 students
per teacher in kindergarten
through third grades.
And while several other
Orange County school districts,
including Irvine, Capistrano,
Tustin and Saddleback Valley
have committed to instituting the
20-student cap and are hiring
new teachers for September,
some local parents and teachers
fear the Newport-Mesa district
are wasting time.
Not so, said school board pres-
ident Jim de Boom.
"We will do our best to imple-

ratio this year," he said after the
school district issued a press

Indeed. No one turns out to a

the unfortunate, darker side of

School officia.ls say the district
can't rush into such a ID4SSive
program headfirst given its dire
straits. While the state will pro-
vide $650 for each student, those
nwnbers only provide about 80%
of the needed costs to implement
the program.
"It would be nice if we bad a
magic wand and could change
everything instantly without con-
sequences, but unfortunately, I
don't have that magic wand," de
Boom said. "We're going to make
the commitment to have lower
class sizes by February, but the
problem is how do you do it with-
out going into bankruptcy. There
are a lot of considerations we
have to take into account."
School officials say they have
called elementary school princi-
pals back from vacation for a July
23 meeting to discuss the pro-
gram's implications and how it
will affect their schools. They will
meet again July 31 with recom-
mendations.

It's his fourth Olympiad.

dream of swimming the Santa
Catalina Channel earlier this
week, there was plenty of time to
reflect about my own dreams
and how vigorously I have
worked to make them reality.
That sort of thing probably
comes pretty easy when you're
-years o an rea g e
point.when you realize the scales
between your past and future
years are at about equilibrium.
Sitting in the darkness of a
moonless night, with the
constant rolling of waves, and
only the lights of a. beckoning
horizon and the slap of arms
against the vast ocean surface
ringing in your ears,
self-reflection is unavoidable.
Growing up a sportswriter's
son, I'm sure my veins were
filled with a percentage of ink
at conception although I didn't
actually start writing until
college. · •
There's a real joy in being
able to interview your boyhood
heroes and ask them the
questions you always wondered
about.
Julius Erving (Dr. J .) was one
of my favorite players in junior
high school. I can still remember
the first time the Philadelphia
?6ers came into town when I was
covering the Phoenix Suns for
AP and I was going to get my
chance to talk with the magician
who made the stylish acrobatics
that are commonplace among
today's NBA artists an accepted
part of the modem game.
My first question, the one I
always wanted to ask, was "How
do you what you do?"
The answer ha.I stuck with all
me all these years. Looking up
from in front of his locker, he
said: "The bosket doesn't move."
At first I thought my hero was
blowing me off with a trite
answer, but the simplicity finally
caine through.

tonight, but track. and
field is still over a week
away.
We picked up Australian pole
vaulter Simon Arkell at the
Olympic Village and headed out
to Life College for a major
training session.
His federation delivered his
poles about the same time we
arrived and then left.
rt was then of course that we
found out the facility was
presently ill-equipP,ed for our
session as the landing pit was
not: out due to a flooded infield. ·we made an executive
decision to go to Cheney
Stadium (the Olympic warm-up
do was figure out how to get the
poles there.
We solved that problem by
taking the straps off of our gym
bags and tying the poles to the
top of the car and held them
with our hands \he whole way.
I remembered how to get to
tha stadium from the Olympic
Thals last month, but now all of
those streets are closed.
We asked at least five people
for directions who all said they
wE!re not from the area and
didn't know.
We finally followed enough
back street that we stumbled
onto it. I guess sometimes even a
blind squirrel finds an acorn.
• At the stadium we were met
with the military and the police
to escort us through the metal
detector area.
Once on the field our
credentials were again checked,
fortunately by a good friend of
mine from San Diego, Manny
Bautista.
Later at lunch a policeman
from Hermosa Beach told us that
he was offered $2,000 for his
"Olympic Police" cap and his
partner sold his. vest for $5,000.
• To say It was hot would be
an understatement. With all of
this driving around I was a little
concerned about the quality of
performance Simon might have
because be really needed a good
practice.
I met his Australian Team
Coach who strangely enough
remembered my vaulting days.
I guess there are really people
that old still coaching. We got
along g'!eat and Simon had the
best practice session of the year,
nearly clearing 5.80 meters
(19-01/•) op two attempts which
would equal his personal best.
Last Olympics that height was
good for the Gold and the Silver,..
so we are starting to get
excited .
• During our slgniticant drive
segments Simon told us about
life in the Olympic Village.
After stories of run-down
dormitory facilities, shared
shower areas, and 300%
markups in the store, be asked if
he could stay out at my s~
nearby Norcross with us.
In face be is having lunch
right nex1 to me as I write.
He brought me an official
Australian Olympic Team shirt
and towel like he did before the
last Olympics.
When he was in Barcelona,
the Olympic Village was new, on
the beach, and apartment-style
living.
Every logistical problem was
carefully thought out to keep the
athletes at ease.
He says not only are things
very chaotic (surprise), the
people don't seem concerned
about the stress this creates on
athletes at such an important
time in their life.
• Decathlete world record
holde.r Dan O'Brien arrived at
Life College and we think we
talked him into vaulting in a
meet there on Sunday.
He said he hadn't been going
to Cheney because he thought it
would be too crowded.
I told him that it has been
almost empty, so I'm sure we will
probably see him out there, too.
Michael Johnson was going
through a workout.
He has a very large
bodyguard that hands him a
towel and water when he wants
it. If I was that fast, I would
probably just outrun whoever
was after me.
While he trained, his
chauffeur-driven limo idled in
the parking lot to keep it cool for
his return.
I failed to mention that Dan
also showed up to practice in the
same manner. How nice to have
sponsors. '
• Simon ta going to video
Opening Ceremonies for me
with my camera. It will be
interesting to see it from that
perspective.
My best chance to make the
team (though I qualified for the
Olympic Thals in 1976) was 1980
when of course we didn't go.
I sensed this in 1978 and
retired as I was tired of starving.
The U.S. withdrawal from those
Games proved my instincts to be
correct.
• We found out yesterday
Africa, who is only 23, but has
the second-highest vault of all
time behind Bubka, will be
competing on Sunday.
He and Simon are good
friends and are planning to come

over for a barbecue after the
meet.
Our Masters World
Championships are in Durban,
South Africa, next year so I have
a lot of questions for him.
• I'm often asked bow I
ended up working with an
Australian.
Like many great athletes,
Simon has trained in the United
States for years because be felt it
was his only chance to discover
his potential.
He went to the University of
New Mexico, but trained at UC
Irvine fairly often because
former Australian national
recordholder Don Baird
(Long Beach State) lived in the
area.
We got to know each other
but our friendship grew as he
wanted my advice on planning
his career after· pole vaulting.
• When housing
arrangements failed to
materialize about eight weeks
from the 1992 Olympics he was
faced with the possibility JC>f
having to return to Australia
until the Games. I spoke to my
wonderful wife who is also fond
of Simon and we invited him to
stay with us.
He lived and trained with us
until I took him to the airport to
go to Barcelona.
• I was one of about 10
people who thought that he was
retiring before his time.
l suggested he start again for
fun (now that he can afford to)
and see how it goes.
His progress was so rapid that
that year.
This year I e-mailed him in
Australia after every practice
and meet.
He broke the national record
twice again, as well as becoming
the first-ever (and only) vaulter
over 19-feet.
As these Games approached
he wanted to duplicate what we
created so he and his wife came
back about 2112 months ago.
They have lived at Don
Baird's (his wife is allergic to our
cats) but every preparation was
done together.
• Now It's nearly showttme.
