NEWPORT-MESA -While statewide
Scbolasnc Achievement Test results were
higher this year than last, Newport-Mesa
saw declines m some scores and m the
number of students who took the college

The test ii ddrrunistered by the NPw'Jer-
sey-based Educdltonal Testing Servtce to
assess studen.ts' ma~h and 'iCrbal skills e.nd
their aptJtude for learning, officials said.
".We scored way above the state.average
and we scored way dbove the national
average," said Eleanor Anderson, the dis-
trict's testing coordmator. "Having said
that, however, the scores dropped com-
pared lo our own scores llist yedr .•
Out of a possible score oC 800, Newport-

above the. state dverage of 516
In the verbal skills component, N ewport-

higher than the statewide avernge of 497.

The scores seem to follow d pattern of,
declirung scores m Newport-MPsa.
Between 1993 and 1995, scores on the ver:-

the scores dropped to 525 m 19!16-97 clncl to

Once upon a time there was a
• television program called
•queen for a Day." Some very
sad woman who had been
thiough a series of horrU1c
• traqCclies was led blinking and
d4ed in front of the TV cameras.
A crown was.placed on her h ead
and she was given a wish come •
tw.e: a new set of cooking pots or
a vacuum cleaner or a washer
• anti dryer.
She cried, host Jack Bailey crted, and we cried•tob. It didti;t
make being a queen seem too .
slir;k, but what ll, instead of·
queen foi a few moments on a
TV set, you were really queen ~
Queen of the Country with the
ki.Od of absolute power that
queens once held .
Today, we get to be queen.
Once we set that tiara firmly in
pl~ce (a big emerald in the cen-
tet please, surrounded by pave
diamonds) and wave the scepter
areund JUSt to get the hdllg of it,
t.hls is what would hap~n.
