•THE JUROR
Not even Newport Beach
City Manager Kevin Murphy
can get out of jury duty.
Murphy got called to Harbor
Municipal Court last week and
was seated on a jury by Friday.
The law-abiding city manag-
er has taken the duty seriously,
Cit Hall em lo ees re ort. He
has refused to disclose what
type of trial he's participating in.
"When we ask him, re says,
'I've been instructed not lo talk
about this,"' said one City Hall
insider.
Murphy hasn't used jury duty
as an excuse to ditch his munic-
ipal duties, either. He still
begins his day at City Hall at
7:30 a.m. before jetting over to
Harbor Court. Then, he stops in
during the lunch break, and
returns to the office after court
is adjourned at 5 p.m. and
"t works a few hours, observers
said.
And yes, he'll be at the City
Council meeting tonight.

Coming to the desert nedr
you ... Sid's II.
Costa Mesa fugitive Sid Sof-
fer l)asn't given up on his plan
to open a restaurant in Las
Vegas. ln a phone call to the
Daily Pilot newsroom last week,
Soffer said he's been scouting
spots for his second Sid's steak-
house and is negotiating with at
least one property owner.
"I definitely will open a place
in Vegas," Soffer said.
Whe rever it's located , Sid's II
promises to stand out in Glitter
Gulch, since it will be missing
something significant -a sign.
Soffer promises his Vegas
venue will be just as difficult to
find as his unmarked restaurant
on Old Newport Boulevard,
which looks like a rundown
shack and even boasts a fake
condemnation notice on the
front door.

A press statement recently

of the late President Richard
Nixon.

Earlier, he hinted that politics
was ta.king a toll on his family

Understandable sentiments.
But hopefully, for the sake of
Costa Mesa and his family, May-

As for the other seats that are

she will not run for reelection,

Let's hope she does so soon ...

TRYING TO STAY
• Even the recollection of those
lonely nights doesn't stop Pat
Sharpe from thinking and
dreaming of the "impossible."
By Richard Dunn, Daily Pilot
C OSTA f\.1ESA-Those are
awfully lonely weekend nights.
On the road, in a hotel room
and temporarily unemployed.
Another golf tournament,
another missed cut. On the Canadian and
Golden State professional golf tours, both
respectable yet 'bush-beating, life can be
cruel outside of the top 10.
Financially, most players merely break
even. Miss '8 cut and you lose money. That's
pressure. You're not just playing skins with
your buddies on the weekend; you need to
pay bills and feed your children.
Costa Mesa's Pat Sharpe, a pro golfer for
. nine years who once made a hole-in-one in
the Taco Bell Newport Classic Pro-Am at
Newport Beach Country Club, has been on
both ends of the golf-tour spectrum, from
winning the 1989 Fort Ord Classic on the
Golden State Tour and teeing off with Tom
Weiskopf in the Mexican Open, to being
stranded in a small Canadian town because
of missing a cut and falling one-inch short
on an 18th-green birdie putt.
Sharpe, who turns 34 on Aug. 26, didn't
crack the PGA Qualifying School and
found himself short on cash. About two
years ago, he retired.
Golf, mind yoUi is a game from which
you never retire. Shaipe has been laying
tile for a living since the $pring of 1995,
only a few months after he earned $5,200 in
the Mexican Open (not bad for a
weekend's worth of work). The bug to play
again, GQmpetitively, is driving him crazy.
•What's iJnportant for any golfer is that
be needs financial support, as well as
mental and moral support, and that's what
my dad gave ~o me," said Sharpe, whose
father died in June 1991.
Sharpe topk over his father's food
brokerage business. Suddenly, his golf was
no longer played full-time.
·vou can't work full-time and keep your
game in shape," said Sharpe, who only
three weeks ago shot a 1-under-par 71 in
Escondido. •niere are guys playing every
day, full-time. How can you keep up with
them? That's the thing about golf, it only
depends on yourself. It's not like a team
sport. If you make an error, baby, it reflects
on your paycheck. A golfer's got to play
their foul balls.,,
Sharpe, former traveling partner of
Corona del Mar High product Eric Woods
on the Canadian Tour, believes he's back,
ready for another crack at professional golf.
He's a sponsor away from attending PGA
Qualifying School. frbm where the µiajority
of the Nike Tour players come.
Beating golf's minor-league bushes, after
all, beats laying tile.
"I have a much better perspective now
with life in general," he said. "Before, it
was fantasy land. People are giving me
money, staying at five-star hotels, playing
golf six days a week and traveling around.
It was great. Now, I'm on.my own, paying
rent and the whole shot. There are a lot
easier ways to make money than play golf,
no doubt about it. But what a great
lifestyle."
Sometimes, tbe lifestyle isn't so great
When your week'' paycheck is dependent
\JPOD a single golf \shot, pressure gets in the
way.
•When you're playing well, there's
nothing better, but when you're not
playing well. it .effects your whole life and

• Word from Atlanta appears to put this XXVIth
Olympiad in step with the past: Plenty of gold, silver
and bronze, as well as those frustrating moments.
E choes. Every four years
they seem to reverberate
when it comes to the
Olympic Games,
something like how the State
Finals in track and field for
California did every year before
they finally got 'wise and put
them in one plate (Cerritos
College) with the same officials in
charge.
Every four years a new group
of amateurs tries to put together a
huge package with
multiple-obstacles, ~d the
resulting confusion and
aggravation is almost always the
same.

· Another newspaper's amusing account of a fellow who couldn't
gain access to a portable toilet stirr.ed some memories within.
When covering the "Pre-Olympics" at Pepperdine University a
few weeks before the Big Show of '84 I found myself in need, but
was turned away from a portable just outside the press room and
some 50 feet from the water polo competition.
Although most of the communist countries had announced their
intentions to boycott the '84 Games because of Jimmy Carter's
decision in 1980 to deny our athletes their shots at the '80 Games of
Moscow, security was still the overwhelming emphasis being placed
in and around Southern California.
So, in the name of security weeks before lhe Games would
actually take place, and although I was already in a restricted area
with my little chain and card draped around my neck, I apparently
wasn't so cleared as to rate a seat in the portable pottie ..
Instead, I was directed down, around, over and into a building
with normal facilities.
I tried to reconcile my frustration for the time lost in the name of
security, but I really didn't.
C overing the Olympic Games during the summer of '84 ls stUl
the single most-remembered assignment for the Daily Pilot, hot
. because,of the events, or for the length of it, but because of the daily,
in-your-face frustrations of dealing with people in
charge of things on a first-time basis.
They simply did not understand the needs of a
sports writer, who had more to do than simply
cover one sin le event and write one or two
ones. or ey care, . ic y err
assignment was simply to make sure you were
contained.
A mong my 17-day marathon were stories on
pentathlon, volleyball, track and field, water
polo. swimming, basketball, and, I'll never forget,
rowing.
The rowing venue was at Lake Castaic and it
began daily at 7:30 a.m., which meant a 4:30 a.m. alarm after a
17-hour day.
I wasn't taking any chances. I was there at 6:30 a.m. in the press
tent, waiting for directions to the competition, and to the athletes.
T he athletes and their quarten were on a peninsula of sorts and
there was only one way to see them, to walk across a pontoon
bridge of some 100 yards.
There was just one problem. At no time would they allow more .
than two writers across that pontoon bridge.
If, and when, a writer would come back from that peninsula,
another writer could go across. --.
Although I was there first, I stewed in a press tent which seemed
to triple the heat of the day, unable to view the competition except by
television, and unable to speak with anyone. ..
I finally made my way across that pontoon bridge at 1:30 p.m., in
search of my rower, the elusive Brad Lewis. b
But when I got over tQ this island I found out why it was biking':'
· everyone so long before they returned over that pontoon bridge.
Your only hope of speaking to someone was to catch them as they
walked from one tent to another. You could enter no structure, at all.
If they didn't come out, they were obviously not in sight.
Lewis, a resident of Corona del Mar, had finished out of the money
in his singles heat, thus was to return the following day or so for "
"repedlage," which meant one last chance to win a heat, and qualify
for the finals. ·
After nearly an hour· of futility I finally found him.
There was my great Brad Lewis, my guy, whom I had written •
(glowingly) of earlier from telephone conversations leading up to lhe
big event.
He was starting to slide his rig from Point A to Point B, a span of a
few feet. ·
•Brad, Brad I," I gushed, ready to declare justice for all.
I walked up to him. sweating like only I can sweat when pushed
to the limits on a very, very hot day. "Have you got a couple of
minutes, Brad?," I said as I pulled out my writing pad and pen. •1t•s

He turned and looked at me as if I had just beaten him in a race
and sent him to repechage. .,
-· "No, not really,• he snarl~. then he turned on his heel and c
walked back into the forbidden area.
Stunned, beaten and bewildered, 1 stood outside that tent for
about five minutes, continuing the sweating proceu.
I bad been there virtually all day long, had not Mell the race, dld
not have anything from my subject, with only a statiltla sheet which
had been given to me in that original heat box they called a prea

Hospital Presbyterian after a year-long bout with cancer.
The 10119-Ume Newport Beach resident was a coach and
teacher at Edison High in Huntington B~ach for more than 25
years. He loved his work, his students and those who felt the
love of teaching that he cherished.
Whether be was coaching one of his Sunset League
championship volleyball teams or organizing the Physical
Education gqiedule for Edison, he gave everything he had,
all of the time, to meet the needs of those people he directed.
Dave coached an Orange County Volleyball Club team at
the 1985 Volleyball Festival in one of the most courageous
showings in OCVBC history.

his doctor informed him that his time was nearing an end. It
