Frustrated parents ~emand district take action
• Calls for lower class sizes
iJ1.crease as group sends letter
asking school officials to adopt
governor's plan.

CORONA DEL MAR -They want
lower class sizes, and they want them
now
About 15 frustrated parents met
midaftemoon Monday at the Oasis
Senior Center to find ways to pressure
school officials to act immediately on the
governor's plan to lower class sizes in
lower grades.

Waste water's
destination a
familiar one
T he bay has been saved.
Let's say it again. The
bay has been saved.
Ob joyous day, the Upper
Newport Bay -that expanse of
environmental grandeur pinned
in by civilization -has been res·
cued from the clutches of the
Irvine Ranch Water District, the
evil empire that wanted to spoil
this outdoor wonderland with its
treated sewage.
You may have read the sto-
ries. Horrible. Shocking. Hide
the kids.
Why, one could just imagine
these water officials howling
wi~ ~ughter .and cl~tchin~
over the prospect of pouring
their sewage into the back yard
of their poor, unsuspecting
neighbor.
But Newport Beach fought
back. And -boy, you just can't
say it enough -the bay was
saved.
Sad story. Good ending. The
good guys won. Right? Right?
Well, I'm hardly a water qual-
ity expert. Beyond knowing how
to turn on a faucet or finding the
Aquafina at the local grocery
store, my knowledge of water is
fairly limited. Big surprise.
But you don't have to know
your aquifers from your aque-
ducts to understand the bay has
not been saved. The truth is the
bay is slowly turning into a
meadow from all the sediment
that has been washed down its
tributaries and is so contaminat-
ed it has been off limits to swim·
ming for yea.rs. It's in big trouble.
Y ou might even argue that
halting the Irvine Ranch
Water District is a hollow victory
at best
Here's the deal:

Parents said they are worrled the dis-

The group, calling itself "PAG" for

parents from nine of the district's 16 ele-

include at least one representative from
each school.

NEWPORT BEACH -The City
Council Monday night agreed to
ask residents to vote m the Novem-
ber election on whether to change
a 37-year-old city law that would
exclude commercial businesses
from the city's rubb.iSh route.
The change to the city's 1959
ordinance would require the city to

Providing trash services to those

estimated $592,000 annually.
City Manager Kevin Murphy
said the change is needed not
only to save the city money, but to
stop certain businesses from tak-
ing advantage of curbside pick-
up. The city spends $250,000
annually to provide this service to
businesses, he said.
For example, the city does not
provide free pick-up service for
trash bms, so some businesses
take advantage of that and stuff
all their garbage into curbside
containers and bags, be said.
"There is nothing stopping a
business from canceling their
bins and putting their trash in
bags and setting them CW'bside, •
Councilwoman Jan Debay said.

Quick, find a: cure for 'Saturday Night Fever'
By Uncle Don, Daily Pilot
W ith apologies to Grant-

against a e ucalyptus sil·
houetted sky, one of the Four
Horsemen rode again. In dramat-
ic lore, they were known as
Famine, Pestilence, Destruction
and Death These are only alias-
es. Their real names are Country,
New Wave, Jazz and Disco.
Sat there I did Saturday night
(sans fever but feeling sick), in
Arlington Theatre amongst the
great unwashed masses, suffer-
ing through an auditory hair
shlrt, waiting for a fat lady to
sing, as a hundred paces to my
north, musical Gak oozed from
, the stage.
Disco, according to the DJ
from KBIG (ain't that the radio
station you hear while getting
root canals?), is back. This can't
be. Your Favorite Unc thought
that it had gone under at least
three times and was dead more
often than Franco. Evidently, it

audience how many listened to
disco, numerous arms were
raised. Was this in assent or cuz
they all bad to scratch? I don't
think there was an empty seat or
a fully cognizant mind present.
There was even one of them
ball things above the stage, and
the first performer come out
doing gyrations and stuff that
coulda been cured with the prop-
er medications or padded
restraints. The audience yelled
for more.
The interpreter on stage right
coulda saved herself a lotta work,
if instead of signing the mean-
ingless tripe emanating from the
speakers, she'd just beaten
rhythmically against her head, a
five-pound sledge.
Group No. 2, Rose Royce,
asked all the women to raise
their arms. Hope they all shaved.
But, the audience, being mostly
aging Baby Boomers, kept them
arms aloft about 15 seconds
before flab and gravity both
exerted their unwielding influ-
ences. The audience yelled for
Rose Royce's last song
involved a hand coordination
drill and proved nothing more
than there's alotta you out there,
having trouble in the walking
and chewing gum department.
Again, the aging Boomers
slowed, slouched and reached for
the Motrin.
The third act, The Trammps,
tried to get the hands clapping
again, but quickly there was
nothing more than the soft squish
of brains sloshing back and forth
as heads weaved to and fro. For
a brief shining moment or two, •
The "Il'ammps performed a Capel-
la. The sky continued to darken
with the retwn of disco. The
audience yelled for more.
By now, the thought of being
at the top of a bleacher filled
with a horde of Boomers shaldn'
and jigglln', 30 pounds past the
polyester of 20 years ago, was
absolutely mortifying. Fortunate-
ly, the final artist, Vicki Sue
Robinson, was up.
Screeching in the key of B
gone, Robinson started to empty
the Arlington Theatre faster than
motel. Attempting something
foolhardy, dangerous and proba·
bly illegal, she lowbrow-beat
these boomers into shaking their
hips. Cal Tech musta registered
this around 8 p.m. The audience
yelled for more.
Ears hurting more than since a
Ramones concert at Crawford
Hall back in the '70s, Your
Favorite Unc bailed before the
end of the show, and was
halfway to the midway before
the caterwauling abated and fly-
ing insects and people with intel-
ligent expressions reappeared.
But tomorrow is another day.
The #concert" was over and
almost all is right with the world.
The sun won't rise in the west,
the Big Dipper will still point to
Polaris, and disoo is still the Pilt-

ence is probably yelling for more.

According to The Drowning
Prevention Network of Orange
County, drowning is the leading
cause of injury death for
Orange County children under
5. The Network offers the fol-
lowing tips for keeping tots
safe.
• Install 5-foot high isolation
fencing around pools and spas.
• Fencing gate should be
self-latching, above a child's
reach, and never propped open.
• Supplement the fence with
additional barriers such as
pooVspa covers and alarms.
•Learn CPR.
The run was put on by the
USAC (The United States Auto-
mobile Club) and USAC officials
were the heart of the operation.
However, a group of non-USAC
people went along as officials
and observers. This group was
made up of business and profes-
sional men who went along for a
week of driving across the Coun-
try, for relief from the usual busi-
ness and professional stresses
and worries, for a change of pace
and most of all for the compan-
ionship. In some respects, it was
a week-long party for those of us
who were not USAC personnel.
MANBA'ITAN
• Do not rely on swimming
lessons or flotation devices to
keep children safe. The mechanics of the run
went something like this:

treated waste water into San
Diego Creek, which feeds the
bay. Makes sense. Could save
the district about $20 million.
Ll.ke, who wouldn't do that?
Newport Beach, slowly at first
and then louder by the moment,
said no way. Could hurt the bay.
Raise the nutrient level. Upset
. the delicate estuary. If this
water's so damn good, keep it in
Irvine. That's what they said.
After a lot of fighting and
yelling, the various parties got
together and hammered out an
a~ent that will result -if
everything goes OK -in the
treated waste water being turned
over to the Green Acres project,
which sounds an awful lot like an
effort to bring back a bad 1V
show but actually is a means for
re-using waste water for irrigation.
So -here comes the fun part -
the reclaimed water eventual·
ly could be be used to water
parks and greenbelts and golf
courses in Newport Beach. And
from there the water will run
right il1to the bay, just where the
Irvine Ranch Water District was
going to put it in the first place.
So that's where months of
negotiations, threatened legal
action· and proposed legislation
have delivered us. The reclaimed
water -like all the water right
up to the Tustin foothills -will
eventually flow into the bay.
It'll just take a slightly more
curious trip in getting there.

relaxed as no other athletes were

I did have several long

in the theories that I apply to
various sports for different

For instance I may have five
athletes in the same position in
the same sport, but their training

applied totally different for each

It's the overlapping theory

Opening Ceremonies in

about his greatest American
rival, two-time Olympian John
Moffet, who swam for Newport
Harbor High.
Moffet was part of the
ill-fated U.S. Team that
boycotted the Moscow Games
in 1980.
At the '84 Los Angeles
Games, Moffet came in as the
reigning world record holder in
the 100-meter breaststroke
(1:02.13). Moffet bested that in
the morning heat, but pulled a
groin muscle in doing it. He
was heavily taped for that
evening's finals, but could
manage only a fifth-place
finish.
Radio accounts of Moffet's
feat in the mo ming hailed his
record .. breaking performance,
but failed to mention the pulled
muscle.
A few hours later Moffet
tried to shake off the injury and

the 200, as well, because of the
injury.
"Steve Lundquist beat it that
night," said Mike Sutton, who
was one of Moffet's earliest
coaches at Mt. Baldy Aquatics
in Qaremont. "There was a lot
at stake.
"They were two of the best
ever and they were not friendly
rivals. It was very tense. John
was pretty bitter about his
Olympic experiences.•
The '84 Games were
especially hard to take for
Moffet who came in as the
prohibitive favorite.
-The gold medal was to be
the perfect birthday present for
the Stanford junior who
celebrated his 20th birthday
just two days before the race.
"It's the first time I've been
No. 1," Moffet was quoted as
saying before the race. "I'm the
one to beat -and it's a fun
position to be in.
Although with the '80
AKER
boycott, Mottet admitted there
was more at stake thhn normal.
"What you have done for the
past six years is on the line,• be
said.
The gold•was not meant to
be, but such is the way of the
Olympic Games. It's the athlete
of the moment who garners the
glory of the gold.
Ask decathlete Dan O'Brien
who failed to hit a provisional
height in the pole vault at the
'92 Olympic 'Ilia.ls and didn't
make the team despite being
the gold-medal favorite.

The ending to the Olympic
story was tragic for Moffet,
considering all the bright spots
along the way at Mt. Baldy
-~-----· later at Stanford.
"When I got to Claremont
there were a number of good
swimmers,• Sutton said.
~Obviously John was the most
noteworthy. I didn't have too
many 12-year-olds looking me
in the eye.·
Interestingly, the coach who
hired Sutton wasn't taken with
Moffet at first.
•He told me he had this kid
doing the breaststroke he
wanted me to work with,•
Sutton said. ••1 don't think he'll
amount to anything. He isn't
very good.' That was John
Moffet.
•So here is my first coaching
job with kids setting national
age-group times. I was thinking
'Oh yeah, what a good coach I
am. This is great.••
When it came time to move
on to high school, Sutton
helped in finding the right spot
for Moffet. .

A typical vaulter carries
five-to eight poles to
compelltion because they are of
dtlf Prent stiffness, which plays a
role in poor or favorable weather
of your own current physical
conditions.
The sWfer the pole, the harder
1t throws you, but the more
energy IS required to "load it."
A strong tailwind and being
physically healthy/rested will
mott likely, ...Wt in peak
performance.
But ii lt rain.I in the Olymplc
final, someone still winl and you
bad better have the right pole to
adapt.
Q
WbeG I ptdlecl ap SlaOD at
the Olympic Village today, I
pulled up out front and waited.
I was a little early, which wu
fine because it gave me an
opportunity to see the "secwity•
in adion.
I was told that when I go to
the Village, do not drive in
because it will be a huge hassle.
I now know what they meant.
Q
Here b the drW. A bus filled
with athletes, a car, or even a
military vehicle (it doesn't matter
as they don't even trust their
own. which.gives tne comfort)
pulls up; immediately five
uniformed military personnel
walk up with rifies in hand or
very close by (at least one has it
in hand), and two officers in
dress blues watch and take
pictures of the inspection as the
vehicle is thoroughly searched.
l saw panels pulled. spare
tires cb&ked, baggage unloaded
and checked, mirrors on
extensions checking the
underside perimeters, and even
a creeper (auto mechanic's
wheeled sled) rolling under the
bus. 1llis happened over and
over while I waited.
Q
Security at the venues
(including Cheney Stadium, the
Olympic warm-up stadium and
our main practice site) itself is
with two layered fences with the
outside one being very tall and
electric.
One of the Australians
decided to test the fence and
tossed a soft drink can at it only
to get showered with sparks.
The inside fence is where the
military or police stay. I guess
that puts them between the
outside and you.
I walked between the two
yesterday at Cheney and was
immediately warned to "move
out of the neutral area."
On top of that, Atlanta police
cars are always parked on the
street outside of the fences.
Q
I heard on the news today
that the success or failure of the
Games will be decided by
Tuesday when the general public
goes back to work.
I don't believe I have ever
heard a more uninformed
statement in my life.
the success or failure of these
Games may be apparent by the
Closing Ceremonies at best, but
in reality, probably not for yea.rs.
I would hate to sound
pompous, but the 1984 Olympic
Ga.mes in Los Angeles set
records in many categories
because of the incredible
Southland spirit and outstanding
leadership.
II we are to have future
eneratio s
anniversary of these Games, it
will take the approach in which
all Southern Calliorn.ian.s played
a major role.

There are times when th~ biddi.ng
you n blueprint of the whole deal. If
you don't make use of the avnil11ble
information, you have no one to
blame but yourself.
In the modern style South's bid of
one spade over the lakcout double
is n one·round force, jusL as if East
hod passed rather than doubled.
North's raise to two spades with a
sound opening, ll ruffinit value and
good three-card support was emi-
nently correct, as was South's cori·
tinuation to game.
