Pavilion withstands time, change • Its metamorphoses have brought it full circle to noble beginnings of 93 years ago. J\J J.'>ON. MIJRM y !Olf Pb If you stdnd very still and listen carefully. you migb.t hear the sounds of ragtime and 1azz, and you might see the dancers swirling around upstairs in the Balboa Pavilion as they cbd m the 1920s. After all. things haven't changed all that much. ·1 think (the pavilion hasJ always been kind of .the center of Uunqs on the peninsula," said longtime resident Seymour Beek, who grew up looking at the Pavilion from his Bal- boa Island home. Built for $15,000 m 1905 in time for the compleuon of the Paeific ·Electric Red Ccu trol- ley line from Los Angeles, the Victorian build- ing was once surrounded by sand and reached by a bodrdwalk that really was made of boards. Although it is surrounded by concrete Side- walks and blocks full of buildings. the gray- and·wh1le landmark still looks sprightly al 93. The pavilion has been a recreational desti- nation and a starting point for spPrt fishing, sightseeing and boating since its construction. Roger's Boot Works, a-hub of speedboat racu'I~ during the early 1920s, occupied the site of what is now the Balboa Fun Zone. Even then the peninsula was a popular destination for college stude.nts, which soon became known for an annual Fow1h of July bathing suit contest. The pavilion was the peninsula's first dance hall. Big-name bands played there until the Rendezvous Ballroom, built in the late. '20s, lured revelers away Beek's first job was setting plllS at the pavil- ion's Sportland bowling alley for 10 cents a, game. . •We would listen to the clank of those bowling balls all night. n said Dorothy Handy, whose family owns the Fwt Zone Boat Co. and used to spend the nights on a boat.in the bay .. The Gronsky family bought the pavilion m 1947 after a period of neglect left it "an old dilapidated building that was ready to fall in the bay," said Art Gronsky. The 26 wooden pilings that supported the building had nearly rotted away. and the city was close to condemning it as unsafe. The Gronskys replaced the wooden. pilings with those made of concrete, "lt doesn't show a lot, but that actually saved the pavilion from tts demise," Gronsky said .. As was popular at the time, the family also remodeled the old builcbng, replacing the walls and putting stucco on the new walls. .·we made it look like a modem building,• Gronsky said. The Gronskys leased the now-vacant ball- room to a gambling company that ran Skillo- Store, a popular bingo game. •Years ago, Balboa was quite a garnbl.ulg town, n .Gronsky said. Eventually, the Sheriff's Department closed down the game and, in the mid-1950s, the Gronskys turned the room into a 3 million- piece shell musewn. The Ducormnen f41llily bought the Pavilion in 1960 and spent about $1 million making the building look Victonan again. Alan Ducom- men restored the roof's original blue shingles, the gray walls. and the cupola, and strung 1,400 lights ctlong the butlding's edges. Eventually the Ducomrnens leased the building to Phil Tozer, owner of the sport fish- ing company Davey's Locker. Thrdugh a . lease-purchase agreement, Tozer bought the budding m 1969 • . Tozer added a waterfront saloon, country store. an oak staircase, and antique furnisb· in gs In t q94, the Balboa Pavilion jomed the National Register of Historic Places. '!We try to keep the facade exactly as it was smce the beginning because that's what make:, it a histoncal landmark," said Betty Tozer, wile of the late Phil Tozer and president • ·of the 13all>Qa1Pavilion Co., which now owns the building. 'fhrough the years, the building has · .remarned a boating and fishmg center. ~ The Catalina Passenger Service started in the 1960s. when dn old Coast.Guard boat and a nverboat chnslened the Pavilion Queen were converted to shuttle passengers around the harbor and to Catalina Island. "It hasn't changed that much,• said Bob Black of the Catalina Passenger Service, who has worked at the pavilion since 1973. •Everybody's still operating pretty much the same way•.
