One of the world's largest sail-

Local man to 'Paddle
for the CUre'
For Costa Mesa resident Mike
Rogers, paddling through 32 miles
worth of waves from Catalina
Island to Manhattan Beach is not
nearly as grueling as what some
victims go through every day with
cancer.
And that is why the 46-year-old
surfer will MPaddle for the Cure"
on Aug. 25with thegoalinmindof
raising thousands of dollars for
Hoag Cancer Center in Newport
Beach.
Driven by the memory of bis
father-in-law, who passed away
from the disease, Rogers ded~ed
cancer by entering the world's
longest paddlebOard race, The
Catalina Classic.
"He has been practidni:ery-
day," said Chris Premer, d of
corporate communications for
Hoag Memorial Hospital Presby-
terian. "Whether be paddles for 8
miles or 18, he's set on improving
himself and bis oal."
Last year awing the 1995
Catalina Classic, Rogers, who had
never attempted paddleboarding
before, raised $6,000 for Hoag
Cancer Center, Premer said. This
year he has his sights set on taising
even more.
•While Mike hasn't set a defi-
nite amount that he wants to raise
yet," he said, MI know he wants to
significantly increase last year's
goal."
If the word is spread about
Rogers' endeavor, Premer said,
perhaps others will get on board
his fund-raising effort for cancer
research.

would like to donate to "Paddle for
the Cure," please call Chris Pre-
mer at 760-5939.

RECALL EFFORTS
Recalls of automobiles over
safety concerns signal an effort
by consumers, government
agencies, and automobile
manufacturers to make cars,
vans, and trucks safer. A
measure of the care and
diligence that these various
Interests bring to this common
goat is underscored by the fact
that, for the first time, the
number of cars recalled
exceeded the number of new
cars sold. According to the
National Highway Traffic Safety
Administration (NHTSA), over
17 .8 million vehicles were
recalled in 1995 and, according
to the trade publication
Automotive News, fewer than
15 million cars and light trucks
were sold in the U.S. during the
same period. This does not
mean that 1995 models were
any less safe than those
years. A safety recall campaign
can cover up to eight years of
a particular model and follows
a safety-defect Investigation by
the NH'rSA.
HINT: According to the
NHTSA, more than 75 percent
of Its Investigations are
prompted by consumer calls to
Its hotline number.
CLUTCH PLAY
If a clutch does not engaqe
firmly upon release, It 1s
possible that the disc has worn
out. This component contains
friction material that works
much in the way that a brake

friction material wears out the
clutch slips. Before a clutch
replacement is decided upon,
however, It should be
determined If a clutch
adjustment Is all that Is
necessary. On some cars, an
Incorrect adjustment may
mimic a burned-out disc and a
simple adjustment can return
the clutch to normal working
order. To see if an adjustment
Is necessary, depress the
clutch pedal. The first Inch or
two of pedal travel, ref8"'9d to

easily. After that, there should
be some sudden resistance felt

CdM eliminated from tour11ament
•Anaheim takes advantage of a few

to drop Corona del Mar's All-Stars

CdM base.running blunders sbort·circwted
rallies in the second, fourth, filth and seventh,
and Ana.helm right-hander D.J. Houlton, who
fanned 10 1n a complete-game victory, was
more than happy to accept the extra outs.
The loss, the locals' second of the towna-
ment. ended their season at 17-~.
Some fortuitous hitting helped Anaheim
Mlle leads of 4-0 and 6'· t through three
tnmngs, and a peir of double plays helped llnl-

to lead the second-hall surge.
Bastani, whose ailing ankle
and knee sidelined him for most
of the semifinal and the first half
of the btle game, said the 18-11
halftime deficit was all the moti-
vation he needed to risk com-
pounding his pain.
·we were down and I thought
I could ~elp," explained Bastani,
early in the second 15-minute
running half to help tum the
momentum, and eventually tied
the game with 2:12 left with a
typically flamboyant baseline
runner. #I was womed about my
knee. but I warmed up a little at
halftime and 1 decided it felt good
enough to go.·
Bastani also fed Brad Calla-
han, who was fouled attempting
a layup with 1 :00 left. Callahan
sank one foul shot to give the '94
graduates their rust lead of the
game.
The 1987 squad, led by former
All-ClF performer Markus
Muller-Stach, did not score the
final 2:30 and '94 football veteran
Chris Taylor added a free throw
for the final margin with 14 sec-
onds left.
Muller-Stach, who finished
with eight points and 10
rebounds, appeared to be fouled
while attempting a three-pointer
in the waning seconds.
However, no whistle sounded
and the victors, who lost their first
two pool play contests. cleared
the rebound for ultimate brag-
ging rights.
"So many people have been
talking trash to me, this means a
lot,• said Bastani. who blew a
kiss to a heckler in the crowd
after sinking bis first three ball
Bastani's eight second-half pointS
were topped only by teammate
Jeff Schroeder's game-high 11.
