By Julie Ross Cannon, Daily Pilot COSTA MESA -Overall crime at Orange Coast College dropped 11 % dur- ing the . 1995<96 'School year with a sub- vated assault incidents, according to the college's campus public safety depart- ment. The department recently released its annual report, which includes statistics on everything from sexual assaults and robbery to lost campus keys and parking citations. The 11 % decrease is for 17 cat- egories of felony and misdemeanor offenses only and does not include other categories, such as parking citations or reckless driving offenses. uwe're pretty pleased with the drop," said John D. Fanner, director of the col- lege's public safety department. . The college reported 186 crimes dur- ing the 1995-96 y~ar compared to 209 during the 1994-95 year. Two new crimi- nal categories -harassing by telephone (four incidents) and possession of stolen property (14 incident) -are new cate- gories in the 1995-96 report and not included in the comparison. One crime on the rise is bomb threats. After not receiving any threats for three years straight, the college received a flur- ry of calls last fall. The first call came in September short- ly after the fall semester began. Another call came in October followed by three in November. •I have a feeling that when the first one came in and it was highly publicized in the student newspaper, some copycats figured it was a great idea to get out of class," Farmer said. Doug Sparks July 29 -Olympic gold for a friend and a test run at the Olympic Stadium • Olivia DiCamilli ready to get back into high gear after knee injury with junior season on horizon. By Jim Walters, Daily 11/ot A s the U.S. women's basketball team prepares for the medal round at the Summer Olympics, their efforts have been striking gold in other venues across the country. Their 14-month, 50-plus game odyssey in prepatation forthe Games has been gathering momentum along the way and is reaching a crescendo in Atlanta with crowds of 35,000 or more filling the stands nightly. It's a crescendo the players hope will be the impetus to get a women's pro league off to a running start. Discussions about the new leagues have had women and girls alike, at every level of the sport, daring to dream of a pro basketball career. One local who would sure be interested in the opportunity is Olivia DiCarnilli who was a star player at Costa Mesa High and will be starting her junior year of eligibility this fall at San Diego State. •so many things are opening . up right now," DiCamilli said. "It's great. The Olympic team is creating a lot of excitement. They are 12 good role models for othet women who want to play basketball.• Several of the stars from this filp side of the Dream Team ID, like Rebecca Lobo, Lisa Leslie and Teresa Edwards1 are · committed to making a women's pro league work. "I used to think the only place I might play basketball after college would be overseas," Di Camilli said. "But now I could ha.Ye an.opportunlty to pl~~r.u.---11 here in the U.S. That would be a dream come true." While the men's game has evolved into a 60-minute combination slam dunk/three- point shooting contest, the women still play the game below the rim. There has never been a slam dunk on the distaff side in Olympic history. Defense is still an important component in the vocabulary of the women's game while it might as well be Latin on the men's side. "I think the only people who don't like the women's game, are people who haven't seen them play," DiCamilli said. "It's based on fundamental. Some people think the women play basketball the way the game should be Olivia DiCamllll played." DiCamilli's pro dreams almost took a tragic tum her sophomore year with the Aztecs. In the first game of the season against George Mason, she tore the anterior crud.ate ligament of her left knee. Instead of showing off her moves on the hardwood, she spent the season going through rehabilitation. "The ACL is the worst knee injury," she said. "It's really scary. You hear of people going down with injuries, but it doesn't really mean anything to yoµ when you've never gone through it. "It's a shocker when you realize just how quickly it can ~ be gone." For the first time in her career, the 5-foot-11 forward/guard was faced with the possibility of not being able to play the game she loves so much. As a high school basketball player there wasn't much OiCamjUH;;ouldn't-do.--She-led the Costa Mesa High Mustangs to CIF Southern Section Division ID-A Section crowns her freshman and senior years, averaging 33 points and 16 rebounds in the latter playoffs. For her efforts, DiCamilll was named the Player of the Year and earned honorable mention All-American honors. The Mustangs were in the championship game three of her four years as DiCamilli earned four letters. She left as the all-time leading high school scorer in Orange County. Her nickname "O, • for Olivia, could have easily been for the way she dominated a basketball court like "The Big 0" Oscar Robertson, a velvety, smooth NBA Hall of Famer who was the forerunner to former (and future?) Laker guard Magic Johnson. As a college freshman, she was on San Diego State's 24-6 team which ran off a school-record 18-straight wins. The Aztecs went unbeaten in Big West Conference play en route to their third straight postseason appearance. Four starters graduated from that team and it looked like DiCamilli, who averaged 3.8 points and 2.7 rebounds, would be in lrposition to make some real noise her sophomore year. That's when the wheels fell off. lnstead of focusing on the negative, DiCamilli dedded to put an accent on the positive. Coming back last season, she averaged 13 points and 6.7 rebounds a game. The athletic junior/academic senior noted she'll get a chance to earn her degree in Speech Communications and then get an extra year to start on her Masters while playing her senior year. "I'm very happy with the progress I've made,• she said ·1 had been told the first year back from an injury like this was the hardest.
