more things that aw c1ffecling
educdtion.
Last Tuesday, we had my
favorite kind or school board
meet.Jog -one packed to the
gills dnd full of passion. This is
democracy at its hnest. It was
· kind of like the Roman Coliseum,
with au~ence membf'rs cla~g
or k.lbitking, depending on
whc>ther they agreed w1th µte.
:,pec1ker\ position The subject
wt1s the board':> second visit

For seniors needing transcripts

Good points were brought up
by all concem<.•d, and the most
-valudble.outcome ts that we will
hC1vc a cli5cuss1on and consensus
dS lo what COnSIJtutes dn honors
clc1ss m the district, and then give
students who ldke such classes m
the future dn l'Xlrti grade point
fur their effort •
• I The second issue, which WdS
not doocJcd. but will be deter-
mined at the Sept. 24 meeting, is
whether the sophomorel>, juniors
dnd seniors should have the hon-
ors classes they have already
taken count when determining
their class rankmg ot overall
grddP point average
Staff meml:\ers mdicated that
1t might be a costly, and a poten-
tially tmpossible l?\U'den. to go .
back and reconfigure· grade point
dvcrages because it couldn't be
detennined what classes were
honors classes in the past. One
student suggested thdt most hon-
ors cldsses had an H in the
course descnpnon on the tran-
script. U not, it would seem easy
enough to find out wluch teacher
in which penod ldught an honors
class dnd designdte it that way
The mecharucs or r~configurd
tion do not seem to be d reason
to put the kibosh on retroactively
As one student said, it's as if the
district tS saying that a child's
edllcation is not worth someone's
time and that isn't the reason we
should or shouldn't do 1t.
REASONS FOR AWARDING MORE
CREDIT TO THdSE THAT TOOK
HONORS CLASSES IN THE
PAST WERE:
• The students have done the
extrcl work so they should get the
credit
• By hononng the students
lhdt take the classes, we honor

• This will provide an mcen-
hve for kids to do well 10 school,
get a good JOb, and earn a com-
fortable living, so that they can
support theJ.f parents m their old
dge. (I appl~ud the teachers that
had that student speaker in lbeu
tldSS)
• Since colleges spend almost
no time reviewing stu'1ent appli-
cations, it is 101portant to recog-
nize Ulose thdt did the extra
work 10 their class ranking and
grade point average
• Smee most other districts
weight their honors classes, our
students are at a disadvantage
and suffer accordingly
• Departments have deter-
nuned the cnteria for what will
be an honors class, antl we
should trust their judgment.
REASONS WHY THE POLICY
.SHOULD NOT BE RETROACTIVE:
• Smee Corona del Mar High
School does not have honors
classes, those students would be
dt a disadvantage Lf they trans-
ferred to another school Howev-
er, they have the most Advanced
Placement eldsscs, which are
ttlreddy subject to dn extra point
being added to the grdde point
dverage.
• Grade inflat10n is already a
problem. and this would exacer-
l>dte the problef!l.
• Students a.nd parents made
deos1ons based upon the under-
standing that honors classes ·
wouldn't count, so they are prej-
udiced by a change in policy. ·
• U honors classes are going to
influence grade point average
and class ranlang, then every
student should be allowed the
opportunity tp tdke the honor~ .
class. (l thought we were tryirlg •
to have every student achieve at
the highest level possible, and
suggest we let every student
take honors classes, whatever
the outcome of this issue.)
Some things m life aren't rau
and it may turn out for the
seruors that Uus lS one of them
But, for you students who did the
harder work, knowing tpat you
could get a better grade with less
effort in a regular class, I com-
mend you In the long run. you
will be better for it.
But, if that affects your ability
lo gel into the college or your
choice, or if you are ranked
below those that did not bum the
midnight oil, l feel ashamed and
sad at the bitter taste that must
leave in your mouth I hope that
·the seven members or the i;cliool
bOdrd who hold your future m
therr hands re<?onsider the mes-
sage Uus sends to those of you
who sb:ive to do your very best.
