FOUR· WHEEL DRIVE
For optimum traction on slippery
surf aces or off-road conditions.
nothing beats four-wheel drive.
Vehicles with part-time four-wheel ;.
drive use a ~te shift Jever, or
dash switch, to "lock." tf1e front and
~ar axles so they tum at the same
speed. Fine for driving through
mud or slfow, the system should be
turned off on dry roads to prevenl
ti.re scrubbing during cornering on
dry roads. on the <><her hand, as ilS
name implies, full-ti.me four-wheel
drive (available as either selectable
or pennanent systems) can be used
all the time. Its center differential
(or equivalent mechanism) allows
the front and rear wheels to 1um
independently during cornering. In
difficult conditions, the cenler
differential can lock to provide
excellent traction.
HINT: All-wheel drive is much
like four-wheel drive, with the
exception that it has no low-rang
gear-making it largely unsuitabl
for off-road use.
A FOGGY NOTION
Recent research helps us further
understand why driving in foggy
conditions has the ~tential to be
so hazardous. -Mcofding to Welsh
researchers, drivers think they are
driving far more slowly than they
actualfy are1nfoggy conditions. As
a ~sull, they areTtk.cly to ~e
their speed dangerously. This sense
of moving slowly in fog likely
happens t>ecause the fog reduces · ·
thC drivers' peroeption of contrast.
Previous studjes have shown that
the perteption of speed is guided
by conttut in the enviroomenc. As
the fog decreases contrast, objects
outside lhe car seem to go by more
slowly. To complicate matter , •
when it is foggy, drivers are
reluctant to tum their attention
away from the road and onto their speedomcten.
Whenever driving conditions are
less than optimum, safety rather
thin speed Should be our priority. Jr
helps to remember that, under
f oqy ccnclitions, our perception is •
not always accurate and that we
should ldiusc accordingly. At C&:F (646-69 IO), our customers are
