llilbun murder conviction cheered
•Those touched directly by. forme r postal worker's 1993 ram-
page say they hope for the harshest sentence.
By John Canalis and Carolyn Miller,

The verdict was just. Now bring on
the death penalty. .
Those were the sentiments Tuesday
from people touched by ex-postal work-
er Mark Richard Hilbun's 1993 murder-
ous rampage that claimed the lives of
his Corona del Mar mother and a man
in Dana Point and injured seven others.
injured by Hilbun. "Justice does even-
tually work its way through the courts."
Hilbun, 42, was convicted Tuesday in
Orange County Superior Court in Santa
Ana on 15 counts tied to the 1993
crimes. He could face the gas chamber
if jurors find he was capable of deter-
mining right from wrong during ·the
crimes.
"If he does get the death penalty, I'd
like to flip the switch ," Monte Salot
said.
Newport Beach police Sgt. Steve
VanHom, who supervised the pime
scene at Hilbun's mother's home, was
pleased with the verdicts. Despite what
defense attorneys claimed, VanHom
believes the murders were the work of a
sane man.
u He no doubt has some emotional
problems, but he did e nough to show he
wasn't insane," VanHom said. "It was a
real brutal crime, then he continued on
for days.•

Second heroin bust

•Authorities say they've

worth of the concentrated
black tar narcotic.
By John Can alis, Daily Pilot
JOHN WAYNE AIRPORT
Orange County Sheriff's
deputies and Santa Ana police
seized four pounds of black tar
heroin here over the weekend,
breaking a bust record set only a
week prior, authorities said Tues-
day .
Michele Amezola, 29, of Santa
Ana was arrested after she
allegedly tried to board a flight
to Seattle with an amount equal
to 250,000 doses of the concen-
trated narcotic. The heroin had a
street value of $2.5 million.
Also arrested on suspicion of
conspiring to distribute the drug
were Lidovina Lucatero, 48, of
Lake Forest and her daughters
AnaRita Prado, 24, of Santa Ana
and Gabriella Prado, 22, of Lake
Forest.
The four women were booked
into Orange County Jail. Bail
was set at $250,000.
The arrests were a joint oper-
ation between the Orange Coun-
ty Sheriff's Department and the
Santa Ana Police Department. It
is the second bust for black tar
heroin in only a week.
Juan Carlos Loya-Callejo was
arrested July 29 on suspicion of
transporting 3.5 pounds of black
tar heroin after showing fake
identification to a ticket agent.
He also was beaded to Seattle.
Gamer said he believes black
tar heroin is popping up at air-
ports because it's easier to trans-
port than powdered forms of the
drug. Though he did not have
specific details, he said heroin
seems to be more of a problem.
u1 know it's coming back to

·Council agrees to end playhOuse lease . .
By John Canalis, Daily Pilot
cosrA MESA-The show may
go on. but it probably won't be at
the Rea Community Center.
The City Council voted 4-1
Monday to terminate its lease with
, 1he <;osta Mesa Ovic Playhouse.
The theater group and other av.en-
d.es use a facility at 661 Hamilton
Ave., a former school, for practice
and productions.
But the Newport-Mesa Unified
School District may reopen Rea as
a magnet school, so the city decid-
ed to stop acting as a middleman
for the propertyL officials said.
The city leases Rea from the
district and in turn sublets it to the
theater and an amalgam of iwUal
service agendes.
Mayor Joe Brickson said the
dty wanted to give ample notice to
the playhouse and other tenants
that the city is getting out of the
dealings.
"We need to be up front with
everybody and let them know the
lease agreeQient is etiding, • he
said. "We'll no longer be required
to provide a home for the play-
house."
The playhouse could stay at the.
site if it strikes an asjreemen' with
the school district but ·the city
would not be involved, Erickson
said.
Playhouse officials could not be
reached for comment Monday or
·Tuesday.
Councibnan Gary Monahan
WU the only couodl member to
vote ·against the measure, mostly
because he generally disagrees
with city subsidies to the play-
house that Monday's vote ensures
will continue for one more year.
The theater group received
$10,250 in municipal funds this
year and will get about $5,250
next year. Monahan said he view5
the playhouse as a private entity.
"The city shouldn't be supple-
menting a private venture with
taxpayers' money," Monahan said.
"I just felt it's not a good use of tax
dollars."

WEDNESDAY, AUGUST 7, 1996 6
Tlie press only feeds the Public's insatiable appetite Robber uses beer
bottle to take bike
T be ncurrtag pJctww over
the past week of the press
encamped outside the
Atlanta apartment of Richard
Jewell. the accused Olympic
bomber, brought back some pow-
erful memortes. I've been there.
Done that.
It's been more than two
decades now since Patty Hearst
was kidnaped from her college
apartment by a band of crazies
who called themselves the Sym-
bionese Uberation Anny. For six
months, the Hearst kidnaping
was a front page story, the biggest
running non-war press event
since the Lindbergh kidnaping.
It also had an unusual element
that bas seldom -if ever -been .
duplicated: the story involved the
family of a prominent publisher.
The Hearst Corp. didn't know
bow to handle this, and for some
weeks Hearst reporters were
dealt with the same way as other
reporters: outside looking in at the
Hearst home in a San Francisco
suburb that was virtually under a
state of siege by the press.
Then one of Hearst's leading
magazine competitors ran a high-
ly publicized story reputing to tell
what was going on inside the
Hearst home. It was mostly
baloney, but it galvanized Ran-
dolph Hearst into the recognition
that the Hearst Corp. needed to
put its own reporter inside the sto-
ry immediately.
I was that reporter.
At the time, I was a freelance
writer doing cover stories for
Good Housekeeping, the crown
jewel of the Hearst magazine
empire. I had been assigned to
the Hearst kidnap story by
McCall's Magazine when the edi-
tor of Good Housekeeping called
and said arrangements had been
made for me to be posted inside
joseph n.
b~ll
the Hearst home.
I was to do" my research from
there and be prepared to write a
two-part article for Good House-
keeping, a series of articles for the
Hearst newspapers, and a book
for Hearst's Avon Press when Pat-
ty was either (1) released or (2)
dead.
McCall's grudgingly released
me. from my assignment, and I
went to Hillsborough and a scen e
that was considerably more
imposing and chaotic than it
appeared on television. The
media had virtually surrounded
the Hearst home. Several banks
of portable phones had been
installed in the street. All of the
1V networks were represented by
enormous trailers, crawling with
wires like the tentacles of an octo-
pus.
Several hundred reporters
were milling about impatiently,
waiting for the crumbs that were
thrown to them periodically from
the front door by Randolph
Hearst.
I drove into this jungle, parked
in the Hearst driveway, and
knocked on the front door. Hun-
gry reporters closed in behind me,
wondering who the hell I was. An
FBI agent -one of several who
had set up shop in the house -
opened the door, and I identified
myseU. He told me to wait out-
sid I could feel the hatred
g u · d me as my asso-
ciates sho ed belligerent ques-
tions at my ck. It seemed inter-
minable unW the FBI agent
opened the door again and
motioned me in.
I spent about four weeks in
Hillsborough, on and off, includ-
ing the period of the Los Angeles
shoot out, when her family didn't
know whether or not Patty was
one of the incinerated cozpses in
the cottage burned to the ground
after police trapped the kidnapers
there.
It was the reportorial plum of a
lifetime that turned out to be a
monumental disaster for me. I
was asked to do my first maga-
zine story prematurely -Patty was
neither free nor dead -because of
pressure from Hearst competitors.
Since the story involved the
publisher, himself, it had to be
read and approved by Randolph
and Catherine Hearst. That
turned out to be a torturous
process, and I was dismayed after
we finally got over that hurdle
when the Good Housekeeping
editor called and asked me to add
some information that I knew
would inflame the Hearsts.
When I explained this to him,
the editor was adamant, and so I
finally gave him what he wanted.

The reaction of Randolph Hearst
when be saw these additions was
even more extreme than I expect-
ed. At his outraged order, the sto-
ry was pulled, the cover re-plated
-and I was taken off the assign-
ment. So much for gold and glory.
Since then, l 've watched the
same media zoo at the O.J. Simp-
son trial and now at the home of a
security guard in Atlanta. As usu-
al, the press is taking a lot of heat
for its behavior. When I hear this,
I always wonder what cribcs
expect.
The news media is a highly
competitive business. What do the
oitics think would happen to the
first publication that took the high
road and backed off this story? A
public perpetually hungry for sen-
sationalism would sunply buy
another paper that was bird-dog-

give the public what it wants. I
think this is called laissez faire
capitalism.
Now, all I have to show for my
four weeks at the vortex of that
journalistic storm are some 30
hours of taped interviews and
conversation made inside the
Randolph Hearst home during the
kidnap period.
I play bits and pieces occasion-
ally in my classroom to illustrate
interview techniques-and dream
of the book I planned to do and
didn't about the public's hunger
for this sort of thing.
I suspect there would be very
little interest today in a book
about the Hearst kidnaping. Peo-
ple want to read about ruchard
Jewell now.
And God knows who next
month.

he believes that yarn would
relieve any mental burden.
If I'm wrong. then all I could
assume was that it was due to a
wobbly ankle that didn't know
when to shift into smooth
action.
Anyway, we, in time, stressed
that all past failures with
old clutches obviously made it
clear that I would never chance
getting into the cockpit of a

•No, you would be fine,• he
said.
•How is that?" I asked,
"No clutch,• he exclaimed,

He and his Big Corona

while Seely, out of UCLA. went

Seely still recalls the day

No grudge lingered. In fact, ·

Speaking of good time days
in San Jose State College area,
former Costa Mesa Police Chief
Roger Neth comes to mind. He
was playing ball in the days of
1949-50, but it also featured
occasional weekends of
stopping by great picnic
grounds to collect big, fat beer
bottles. He and his lad fnend
did well consistently since the
gunny sacks could often bring
in enough to pay for weekend
gas and picnic lunches.
More inte resting is how Neth
got into police work after
college.
H e had become adept with a
big camera before he came
upon a terrible Coast Highway
crash one night. Two Newport
officers, who had arrived were
frantic since they had no
camera on hand.
Neth had one at home, but
no vehicle at the time. He
offered his help, yet noted be
bad no car.
One officer yelled, •Hell.
take ours and go get your
camera." It is fair to say Neth
was trusted. Both officers knew
him.
"I did what they asked,"
Neth said, "and that's what led
to the job."

OSM) still must· ratify
three-year extension
• Newport Beach CC,
Toshiba in agreement,
but there is still ISM to
deal with before extension
to 2.000 is a done deal.
W hen goll aficionados
think of Augusta, they
think of the Masters.
Pebble Beach? Bing Crosby and
AT&T. Torrey Pines? Andy
Williams and Buick. So what
about Newport Beach Country·
Club?
·0ur hope and vision is for
this tournament to be like other
(PGA sites) that are symbolic of
the city, that when people think
of the Toshiba Senior Classic,
they think of Newport Beach
Country Club," said David
Wooten, President of
International Bay Clubs, Inc.,
which owns NBCC.
With a three-year contract
extension agreed upon last
month by the event's title
sponsor and International Sports
and Event Marketing, wttjch
manages the Senior PGA Tour
event, the second piece of the
event's future involves an
agreement between ISM and
Newport Beach Country Club.
NBCC will host the Senior
Classic for the second year in a
row March 10-16, after which the
two-year deal between the club
and ISM will expire.
Officials of ISM and the dub
will meet Aug. 15 to discuss,
among other things, a possible
contract extension.
·Just as Toshiba signed on for
another three years, we hope for
(a three-year extension) that will
take us into the next century,"
said Wooten, part of a
three-tiered team that includes
Chairman of the Board, Beverly
Ray, and Vice PresidenVGeneral
Manager, Jerry Anderson. ·r don't see any reason why
we can't (reach an agreement).·
Anderson said. ·Tue Senior Tour
officials and players have been
very happy with the venue we
have here. They were happy
with the goll course and the
facilities, and happy with
Newport Beach, so it looks like a
win-win Situation. We just to
work out an agreement, and I
see no reason wh it isn't oin

to happen."
NBCC, which had never
hosted a PGA. Senior Tour or
LPGA event before this year, has
prominent benefits with its
nearby restaurants, hotels,
shopping centers and
recreational amenities, in
addition to its closeness to John
Wayne Airport.
The tlub reportedly received
a site fee (paid by ISM) in the
$75,000 neighborhood last
March. Site fees generally range
between $50,000 and $200,000,
depending on the location and
the event's history, according to
Tun Crosby, the PGA Tour's
Director of Administration.
ISM President Bob Neely.
unavailable for comment
Tuesday, had considered Coto
De Caza a year ago, before
selecting NBCC.
•we still have to negotiate on
the finer points of the contract for
next year, because there are
some open-ended things we
need to finalize. before we even
discuss (the future beyond
1997), • Stephen Wagn~.
tournament director, saia
Tuesday. ·we have to get to first
base and then go to second base.
I would like to stay in Newport
Beach, yes, but everything must
be reviewed for next year by
Sept. 1. H
Neely's primary concern
before leaving for the PGA's
annual meeting in Michigan last
month was getting a three-year
extension inked by Toshiba,
which will now sponsor the
event through the year 2000.
"I think our relationship (with
ISM) has been good,• Anderson
said. ·we're extremely
optimistic."
