Drug suspect
allegedly rams
patrol boat
• Authorities say Long
Beach man, held on sus-
picion of marijuana and
methampheta.mirie, tried
to evade capture.
By John Canalis, Dal1y Pilot
NEWPORT BEACH -A man
was arrested Tuesday on suspi-
cion of methamphetamine and
marijuana possession and resist-
ing arrest after allegedly tossing
his drug stash into the Newport
Harbor and ramming a Sheriff
Harbor Patrol deputy's boat.
John Harold Torres, 30, of
Long Beach was stopped by
Orange County Sheriff's Deputies
at 1:30 p.m. for illegally anchor-
ing his 14-foot rental boat off Bay
Island, said Sheriff's Lt. Dick
Olson.
After a deputy asked Torres to
move his boat he noticed a small
pipe on the stem. The deputy . '
of marijuana.
Torres allegedly told the
deputy he had smoked his entire
supply, Olson said.
The suspect was taken aboard
the Harbor Patrol boat and asked
to empty his pockets. Olson said
the Torres produced a rolled up
bag containing a small amount of
pot.
Torres was then told to empty
bis fanny p.ick. As he did, he
tossed a small colored bag from
the pouch into the water.
"It appears he did that to avoid
the deputy seeing it,• Olson said.
Torres then dived into the bay
after the bag, but deputies
retrieved it and a small amount of
drugs first, Olson said.
The suspect swam back to his
boat, started it up and attempted
to flee, ramming the Harbor
Patrol vessel several times, Olson
said.

•Artist helps Newport Beach celebrate its 90th birthday.
By carolyn Miller, Dally Pilot
It wasn't until Steve Simon
strolled along Balboa Island's
quaint streets and sunned along
Newport's shores that he realized
this was the city he wanted to call
home.
The sights ai!d scenes of this
coastal city inspired the young
world traveler, to not only settle
down, but abandon a promising
business and engineering career
and realize his dream of becoming
an artist.

brate the city's 90th anniversary.
The glossy book "Newport

Years," will debut at a 90th
anniversary party Saturday from 6
p.m. to 10 p.m. at Graphics Gallery
on Balboa Island. The public is
welcome to the party to celebrate
the city's incorporation. Several
local businesses are sponsoring the
event.
"The most interesting thing
about Newport Beach is its collec-
tion of villages," Simon said. "I've
never been to a city this size where
the villages within it have retained
their individual personalities."
At the celebration, an original
oil painting of the historic Balboa
Theater Will be auctioned. The pro-
ceeds will be donated to the land-
mark theater which is being refur-
bished.
"I think art should benefit art,"
said Simon, a Balboa Island resi-

The gift was welcomed by Day-

DON WINTON
Molding a reputation
HE IS
Corona del Mar resident Don
Wmton. a sculptor and legend
among cookie jar collectors.
OAYDAYS
When Wmton was 5 years
old, his mother plopped some
clay on the kitchen table and
told her twin sons to be con-
structive with it.
Taking his mother's advice to
heart, the freelance designer
made playing with day his
career.
In 1937, the teenage Winton
and his twin brother Ross began
operating 1Win Wmton Ceramics
out of a garage in Pasadena.
After taking a break from the
business in 1942 to enter the ser-
vice during World War n. the
twins and older brother Bruce
each used their G.I. Bill funds to
open up shop in 1947, and con-
tinued the business until 1977.
Wmton designed cookie jars
from the 1950s through the
1970s. Llttle did he know his
whimsical ceramic cow, bear
and elf cookie jars would make
him famous.
THE COOKJE MONSTER
About three years ago, Win-
ton, 77, received a call from a
cwious cookie jar collector from
New York -a collector who has
more than 2,000 cookie contain-
ers.
Ml answered 'Winton Sculp-
tures,' and the woman asked,
'Who am I talking to?'" Winton
said. "I told her who I was and
there was a big silence on the
phone. She said. 'Am I talking to
Don Wmton? I thought you were
dead!'"
Wmton and his wife of 48
years, Nonna, learned that the
Winton cookie jars were hot
items among collectors and
worth anywhere from $45 to
thousands of dollars, depending
on age and rarity.
Winton recently sold a sketch
of one of his cookie jars for $700.
Tilree to 400 cookie jars were
designed by Winton during his
45 professional years. Many of
them sold for $3 at the time.
MINOR CELEBRITY
Although his cookie jars have
made him famous, some of the
admiring collectors might be
interested in knowing his sculpt-
ing past and present goes
beyond the jars.
"Don bas designed 10 to
12,000 different pieces,· said
Mike Ellis, Wmton's friend and
author of a cookie jar encyclope-
dia that will display Wmton's
designs and personal history.

• Homeowners in the Bluffs community have hired an
attorney to research whether they can take any legal
action against Heartskober Manor.
By Carolyn Miller, Daily Pilot
NEWPORT BEACH -The
stakes are too high for residents to
rely on luck.
The Bluffs Homeowners Associ-
ation, which represents more than
600 residences, retained an attor-
ney last week to research whether
their rights were violated when a
group care home for compulsive
gamblers moved into the neigh-
bortiood last month.
HPeople are still talking about it,
it's heated up even greater,,, said
Doug Bulley, a long-time Bluffs res-
ident and association board mem-
ber. HWhen it gets to the point of
retaining an attorney, it's not a fun
deal."
Residents a.re concerned the
facillty could be disruptive to their
community where homes are
attached and common areas Wee
swimming pools are shared.
Called the Heart.skober Manor,
the group home will house a maxi·
mum of six clients who must pay
$10,000 each for a 28-<iay program
that will include the Gamblers
Anonymous 12-step program and
confidential treatment, according
to Heartskober officials.
David Morehead, program
director for Heartskober Manor
located in a home at 2177 V1Sta
Entrad.a. said the potential clients
are •high functioning~ people who
can afford the treatment, which ls
not covered by insurance. More-
head said in an earlier interview
that the rented home will provide a
quiet environment and be non-dis-
ruptive to the neighborhood ..
wThis Is a conunercial activity
not appropriate to the area,,, said
Newport Beach attorney Frank
ome
Punelli, who represents the Bluffs.
"We are finding answers and seek-
ing the cooperation of the home-
owner and the tenant in resolving
the issue.•
Whether the dty should have
issued a business license to the
group home in the first place is one
of the issues Punelli is researching.
The Heartskober Manor applied
for a business license as a mental
health facility and was granted the
license in May.
Punelli said he Is working with
the aty to learn whether a group
home such as this is allowed in a
residential area.
City Councilman Tom Edwards,
whose district includes the Bluffs,
asked dty staff to compile a report
with information on group homes
and what the dty can and cannot
do in regards to these facilities.
City Manager Kevin Murphy
said the report will be presented to
the City Council at its meeting
Monday. A few years ago, despite
opposition from the dty, the state
took over local control of group
ca.re homes, Murphy said

It's case closed, for now.
The Costa Mesa Qty Council,
not wanting to reopen a healing
wound, denied a request to
reopen bearings on the recently
settled lawsuit between the ·city
and the Orange County Pair.
The dty had sued the fair in
1991 in attempts to stop plans for a
betting facility, restaurant and oth-
er attractions on the fairgrounds.
The city dropped the suit after the
fair scrapped the plans.
Newport Beach attorney
Richard Spix on Tuesday asked for
a new hearing on the settlement.
Spix represents residents who live
near the fairgrounds and are con-
cerned about potential noise prob-
lems.
But officials voted 4-1 to deny
the request on grounds that the
public already had ample oppor-
tunity to comment on the case.
Councilwoman Sandy Genis
was the lone dissenter in the vote.
She said the city settlement is too
soft since it allows crowds of up to
25,000 at the fairgrounds. The
crowd cap is not in effect during
the annual Orange County Fair .

I hadn't heard about the acci-

Never. but never, have I

It certainly wasn't the same

Frankly, I was afraid to call him,
afraid that the worst inight have

Instead, Gerry told me, with
his gusto of old, about "A mirac-

"Saturday night. Christa

"Speaking" was probably a

Christa was practically orating.
"It was the most wonderful

in Newport Beach real estate,
the Longs were deeply involved
with the arts, Christa as a
dancer, Gerry as a musician and
teacher.
Christa never lost the
dancer's agility and superb
physical conditioning and
worked hard to maintain it.
"Christa has always been active
and healthy and I think that's
what helped pull her through
this," Gerry said.
But she will be a tough cus-
tomer now that she is on the
mend. I suggested that. with her
intelligence, Christa would
probably be an ideal patient.
"Don't you believe itl" Gerry
laughed. "The toughest thing
will be to keep her reined in."
Indeed, even when she was
in the coma, Christa tried to get
out of bed. Christa has now
been transferred to Tustin Rehab
Center, where she will have to
learn to be a person all over
again. She will undergo inten-
sive speech, occupational and
physical therapy three times a
day.
And every evening, Gerry
will come in and softly sing
Christa to sleep with the songs
of her childhood in Germany.
lt takes a lot more than run-
ning a red light to break up a
team like the Longs.

The board has offered the site

While the commission's vote

on the Aug. 12 council agenda,
Demmer said she hopes council
members can discuss the site at

"We didn't talk about any of
the sP-edfics, • Demmer said.
"That s for the dty staff and
council members to discuss.
We're saying this would be. a
desirable recreation area."
Demmer said the dty needs
gymnasium space because it is
losing its lease at Lincoln Ele-
mentary School, where dty bas-
ketball leagues play. ,
•we recognize that we cer-
tainly have been privileged to
use the facility of the school dis-

A party season guaranteed to fill your black book ~ ....
• • I
T be lnvttatlom were In tbe
mall this week for the gala
10th Anniveisaly affair
honoring The Orange County
Performing Arts Center.
The big names on the gold
embossed parchment declaration
include Henry and Renee
Segentrom, Cathertne Thyen.
Aden Flam.son. and Mark John-
son.
Mark your calendar for the
evening of Sept. 8, when organiz-
ers, underwriters, patrons and
saints turn the center into a glit-
tering wonderland of guys in tux-
es and gals in gowns celebrating
10 years of music and dancing,
drama, laughter, and sheer joy. If
you didn't receive an invitation
(an oversight, of course) and
you'd like to participate in the
landmark event, call The Center's
10th Anniversary office at 556-
2122, extension 550, and get out
the gold carcl.
Remember that your center
operates in the black on private
dollars. Not a penny of taxpayer
money supports the arts at the
center. It's something to be proud
of, even if the $1,000 tickets are
not in your budget. Performances
all year long are supported and
underwritten by conununity funds
raised at events like the 10th
Anniversary Gala.
And speaking of underwriting,
Andy Ciean is .throwing a little
get-together Wednesday. The
rebuilt Villa Nova, which burned
due to a kitchen fire last season,
will host a party benefiting The
Associates of The House Ear Insti-
tute. Crean is the chairman of the
event and he can be seen orga-
nizing the workers putting the
final touches on his restaurant as
you drive by the Coast Highway
landmark.
The neon sign is working, the
roof is on, the faux painting is dry,
but there are still windows miss-
ing, and plenty of last-minute fin·
ishing.
Carpenters may still be bang-
ing nails while cocktails are
served Wednesday -but they will
be served, promises Crean.

COLLEGE BOUND
AND
CAVITY-PRONE?
As young adults leave for college,
their parents ask them not to forger to
call home and to come visit once in a
while. The same requests could be
made by their demisu-all to schedule
appointments and visit regularly for
exams. All coo often, young adults
leave concerns about their oral health
behind when they leave for college. All
it µIces is a bit of foresight to schedule
dental appointments so that they
coincide with visits homt during
vacations and holidays. lf leaving home
entails taking responsibiJjcy for one's
own life, ensuring the health of one's
own teeth is part of that responsibility.
Unlike college students, teeth never
come back once they arc gone.
We offer the dental health care chat is
jwt right for you. It is ncver too early
or too late to start a periodic regimen
of professional artcncion to all your
dental needs. We believe in early
detection and annual checkups. We're
located at 144 1 Avocado Ave., Suite
508, Newport Beach, where we
provide a friendly, professional
atmosphere for the whole family. Our
in-house lab facilitates our patients'
time and convenience. Call 640-5680
to schedule an appointment .
from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m., at The Bal-
boa Yacht Oub. Participants will
be given seven dues to propel
them through the bay to a final
prize-winning destination.
The entry fee is $75 per electric
boat. which includes lunch and
souvenir T-shirts. Sponsored by
Sears, Sterling BMW, Northern
'Dust Bank, Steinlager, and our
own Daily Pilot, the day promises
to raise a handsome sum to sup·
port the proj'ects of the beloved
Assistance League. Call 557-5100

I looked at the platter lD

cheddar and jack cheese
smothered over a burrito
bathed ln red sauce. But
before I sunk my fork into the
sinful mass, the guilt set in.
Then it melted away fast,
like butter on a fajita skillet,
,when I noticed one of my din-
ing companions eagerly dig
into her fried taquitos ($4.95)
with a dollop of guacamole
and a scoop of sour cream.

happily munching away on a
deep-fried tortilla hugging a
hearty pcntion of chicken.

Previously, the city has made

In Light of pending legislation,

I am pleased trustee Ed
Decker recognizes there may
be differing opinions among
Newport-Mesa School District
parents regarding spending the
district's significantly limited
resources to revamp the GATE
program.
It seems to me before we
spend considerable time, effort
and money on enhancing the
GATE program for a select
number of students, who
already excel in school, we
should focus on others.
Those students who, against
the odds and with assistance of
dedicated staff, are trying to
overcome physical and learn-
ing disabilities in order to join
the mainstream student popu-
lation of the Newport-Mesa
School District.
At the Newport-Mesa Dis-
trict Special Educational Center
at Marion Parsons school, some
classes are expected to double
in size this year.
Children, some with walkers
and other orthopedic appara-
tus, play on brown, scorched,
cracked and grassless play
'1 areas behind walls badly in
need of paint and maintenance.
Anyone who has.visited this
facility and witnessed the
patience, positive attitude and
energy of the teachers and the
determination of the students,
should feel embarrassment and
shame that we as a community,
and a fairly affluent one at
that, have expressed so little
interest concerning compassion
for our unfortunately growing
population of special needs
students.

We are very disappointed
with school board's decision to
wait another year. We can't
understand how the school
board feels they can hire teach-
ers and reduce class size in six
weeks, but not initiate a GATE
program.
The hope of the parents was
to move pre-screened fourth
grade GATE children as a pilot ·
to an empty classroom at Har-
bor View. That would alleviate
some overcrowding at other
schools and have them all put
together in a regular fourth-
grade class.
We can't believe there is not
a teacher who would like to
teach a class of already pre-
screened GATE students. Ed
Decker says "there is no una-
nimity of community support."
He has not called the GATE
parents nor was he at the July
17 meeting, so how does he
know there is no unanimity of
support?

Davenport's parents had
moved from Palos Verdes to

United States Tennis Association
suggested she seek the coa.cbing

Pall.sades facility in Costa Mesa.
•(Rolley) was the one who
was always looking at stuff for

Davenport said. "(Van't Hof) was
in the area, or at least near to
where my parents had moved.
"He's my only coach. But I

Davenport would commute

Initiated by Charlie Brande in 1978 as a
tool to link future two-time Olympic gold
medalist Steve Timmons with the finer
points of the game, the Balboa Bay Club
Men's League bas grown to engender
reverence from members of the Back Bay,
even Southern California, volleyball
community.
•1t's pretty legendary," said recent
Newport Harbor High graduate arid
All-CIF middle blocker Wes Badorek,
BBC's balmy, bleacherless gym, to which
All-Americans past, present and future
flock annually like Muslims to Mecca.
"It's the best men's league in the United
States," said Brande, who still oversees
every match from the referee's tower,
wedged between the gym's east wall and
the net, no more than a jump serve away
from Coast Highway. "When I started it,
there weren't any big-name players, but it

collectors-item T-shirts.
Dotting the rosters of the league's 12
current teams, broken into six-team round-
robin groupings on Wedrlesday and

All-Americans including: Matt Fuerbnnger,
a star on Estancia High's state champi-

Tom Pestolesi, who went on to coach at
Estancia and Newport Harbor after starring
at the University of Hawaii; Matt Lyles, an

includes high school stints at

collegiate bench assignments at
Hawaii and currently UC Irvine,
and more than two decades of
coaching various age-group
contingents from the Balboa B.ay

BBC.
"Everyone of these guys is
still very competitive, so that
stuff definitely goes on," Gan

Nelson, Badorek and Walker

slightest glitch in Glenn's game.

with from his referee's perch,
however, is a strict interpretation
of ball-handling standards.

Even the typical barriers

legend with taming some of the
trash talk that erupts petiodically.
Pestolesi said Brande's

comedic relief. "I've always looked forward to

"The real reason we play is so we can

after a recent match. CONTINUED FROM 81
The mere fact that estimates are
required is testament to both the team's
dominance and it's humility.
"We've been playing together since
1980, which is pretty am~g when you
think about it," said Pestolesi, a charter
member in the men's league (begun in
1978), a former All-American at Hawaii,
and an ex-head coach at Estancia High
(boys and girls) and, Irvine Valley College
(men). "We started playing in
Ciarelli, a renowned athlete at
Huntington High and Long Beach Stale
who now coaches the Oilers' boys and
girls teams, turns 40 later this month. His
ample setting and passing skills still
command respect and his fiery personality
has triggered countless men's league
confrontations. These encounters -mostly
verbal, though a few have escalated to the
physical stage -still provide entertaining
anecdotes during post-match
get-togethers with teammates at a local
watering hole.
D' Allesandro, 37, has coached at
several local high schools, in the Balboa
Bay Club program, and collegiately at
Long Beach State and GWC.
Knipe, a college All-American at Long
Beach and a current pro beach player, has
coached at Golden West and presently
works as an assistant at his college alma
mater. •
"I learned most of my volleyball from
these guys, so it's a blast to play with
them," said Knipe, one of the
aforementioned 20-something bombers.
A strapping 6-foot-6 outside hitter, Knipe
can still launch rockets from on high.
D' Alessandro's backyard because we
loved to play the game and the reason
we're still playing is the same. The fact
that We're all buddies makes it even more
special."
Gasparian, the oldest member of the
squad at 41, is another Huntington Beach
High graduate who went on to coach state
championship men's and women's teams
at Golden West College. Still coaching the
GWC women, Gasparian has also coached
several indoor professional teams. He
missed two recent Wednesday matches,
•Some of the younger guys make the

through the net after they make a routine
kill,• Pestolesi said. "When that happens,
Dan and I look at each other and laugh.
We know then, we're definitely going to
win."
Jose Gandara, a former Brazilian
national team member, and former GWC,
Fountain Valley High and Long Beach
State kill artist Tim Johnson are other
young recruits, who provide powerful
payoff to the consistent ball-handling
excellence of his elder teammates.
Said Brande, •Rocky is as good an
athlete as we've ever had in this league.
It's not very smart to get him riled."
Ciarelli is arguably the team's biggest
clown, as well.

1) Defensive line coach
Roger Roelle still loves to

2) Bryan Bear, a defen-

4) Former defensive

Hlected a passive trump for the

to shoot a club through the king.

OeclRrcr won the opening lead in
dummy and immediately led B low

with the queen but could not atlack

anot.her trump, taken in dummy.
The king or Spadea was cleared

cashed for a diamond discard. Now
the jack or diamonds waa led for a

evoked such a profound comment.
If West. held the king, the club

North had a choice of poor rebids
-a heart raise with only three-
card support or one no trump with-
out a club stopper. With a perfectly
balanced hand, North rightly, in
our opinion, chose the more deRCrip-
tivq one no tr11mp, but South
thought the hand might play better
in hearts once North showed prefer·
ence.
Reluctant to lead fro11:1 an honor

of diamonds. Declarer could now
afford to lead 11 club to the king in ~
an effort to score on overtrick. No
luck!
