NEWPORT ~EACH -City
Q(fidels bave reached a tentattve

panies believed responsible for
the 1990 oil spill that blackened
local beai:hes.
Newport Beach filed suit
against Golden West Refining
Co. along with the state, the
county and the dty ol Huntirig-
ton Beach in 1991. The tentative
agreement would supply the
agencies with a total of $4.15
million.
The agreement still requires
court approval, and Newport
offi~a.ls aren't looking to receive
money any time soon.
"We don't know yet how
much we would receive," said
Assistant City Attorney Robin

notice a gym. There is no movie
theater or car spa. And most
notably there is no. apparent rush
to be the first or the best or the
smartest or the thinnest. But
ID4ybe that is how I choose to see
tfuiigs when I visit Dubois
because there I am on vacation,
living in my parents' home, well
taken care of, at peace with the
world. Balboa Pier next to close at midnight
I believe this town has a little
bit of everything good. In bal-
ance. There is even a future busi-
ness opportunity. Quite promi-.
nently positioned in the middle of
town is a large, handsome aban-
doned general store named "Wel-
ty's. •
• City action comes as officials look for ways to keep }?oth piers clean.
During my time in Dubois I
have heard many speculations as
to why it was abandoned with
inventory intact and why the Wel-
tys aren't doing anything with it.
It is a gorgeous old structure
framed in varnished logs and
smacking of 1940's American cul-
ture.
Everytime I pass it, I like to
peer through its large picture
windows and imagine what the
store will look like when Jim and
the boys and I are running it.
After we win the lottery.

will have to reel 'em in by mid-

as the Balboa Pier becomes the
second one in the city with
restricted hours.
A gate will keep the Balboa
Pier closed to the public effective
tonight, from midnight to 5 a.m.
in an effort to deter vandalism
and reduce the litter and fishing
debris that accumulate on both
the Newport and Balboa piers.

The closure was effective at
the Newport Pier starting JuJy
19.
The city's decision to close the
two piers came after months of
study and contention between
anglers -who wanted to protect
their fishing rights -and mer-
chants and residents, who want
to preserve the piers and keep
them clean even if it meant ban-
ning fishing all together.
City Manager Kevin Murphy
said the closure will not only
curb the vandalism and litter
problem, but allow city crews
' time everyday to clean the fish
guts and debris and do an occa-
sional steam cleaning of the pier
itself.
The long-time image of the
beach and the pier is a reflection
on the city, Murphy said, and if it
appears to visitors to be a mess ' '
and not well taken care of that is
a negative reflection.
As the public gets used to the
pier closing, Newport Beadl
police will help clear the pier and
educate the public about the,
new hours without any heavy
enforcement, police said.

• Opening week bye would leave
a potential berth for her in tourney.
·ay Richard Dunn, Daily Pilot
NEWPORT BEACH -Uthe draw for the
15th annual Vic Braden/CHOC Padrinos
Tennis Festival can accommodate Lindsay
Davenport with a bye the opening week-
end, it appears the Olympic gold medalist:.
in women's tennis at·the Atlanta Games
will play in the highly popular charity dou-
bles event next month.
Davenport, coached full-time by Robert
Van't Hof of the Palisades Tennis Club,
would team with her mentor in the mixed
open divislon if her schedule permits her to
play. ·
•There's some hope, but I don't know if
we're both going to be here," Van't Hof said.
•If we're here, we'll give it a try. I..iiidsay's
home for two weeks after the U.S. Open
(which starts later this month), then the Fed-
eration Cup is the third week after that."
Davenport, 20, is a member of the U.S.
Federation Cup team that will play Spain
for the title in Atlantic City Sept. 28-29.
Spain features Arantxa Sanchez Vicario,
whom Davenport defeated in the gold-ntedal
match at the Atlanta Games last Friday.
"We're hoping Llndsay Davenport is
going to play, but now that she has won the
Olympics, she might be too busy for us,"
said Shirley O'Connor, first-year tourna-
ment chairman of the CHOC Tennis Festi-
val, which benefits Children's Hospital of
Orange County, a regional pediatric center
that treats children from birth to age 18,
regardless of the family's ability to pay.
Davenport is no stranger to the event,
having won the women's .open division
with Jolene Watanabe in 1992, then play-
ing with Van't Hof to win the mixed open
title in 1993, the last year Van't Hof -the
tournament's most celebrated performer -
competed in the event.
Van't Hof won five consecutive men's
open titles in the CHOC event with Tim
Pawsat from 1989 to 1993, and won three
mixed open championships in a row with
three different partners (Anne White in
1991, Cammy MacGregor in '92 and Dav-
enport in '93).
•Robert and I won the mixed doubles
before, and maybe we'll play again this
year," said Davenport, who could not play
the first weekend of the CHOC Tennis Fes-
tival, because it's the same weekend as the
Federation Cup, but she could be available
for the event's final weekend (Oct. 4-6)
when matches begin in the invitational
open division.
Davenport, a Newport Beach resident
and charter member of the Palisades Club,
is the top-rated American on the Women's
Tennis Association Tour. Van't Hof, as well
as her doubles partner, Mary Joe Fernan-
dez, believes Davenport is on the verge of
a breakthrough.
She needs to consistently beat Vicario,
Monica Seles, Conchita Martinez and Stef-
fi Graf, who have dominated the tour the
last thr~ years and against whom Daven-
port-owned a 1-15 combined record before
the Olympic Games. Graf did not play in
the Olympics.
"It's just a matter of time,· Fernandez
has said of Davenport's anticipated break-
through in singles. "It's experience. Once
you make the first breakthrough, the rest
comes easier. You have a little more confi-
dence that you can do it."
Davenport and Fernandez won the
French Open doubles title this year. In sin-
gles, Davenport has reached the quarterfi-
nals four times in Grand Slam events.

September this year, because
WIT officials did not want to
compete with the Olympics. Now
it can compete with the NFL and
World Series. Good luck. 0 .
Van't Hof, Davenport's
full-time coach on the Women's -
Tennis Association Tour, will be
traveling with his star pupil next •
month.
Davenport sought the services
of Van't Hof four years ago, a
month after ~g the U.S.
Van't Hof did not know
Davenport at the time. Lynne
Rolley of the UST A suggested
Van't Hof to Davenport because
of his proximity to her
then-Murrieta home and his
reputation.
"I've been lucky,· Van't Hof
said of coaching Davenport. a
top-10 player in the world. •it
has worked out well for me."
0
Picky Politics: Rumor has it
that throughout the Atlanta
Olympic Games, in which
Davenport won the gold in
women's tennis, USTA officials
tried to defuse any mention of
Van't Hof, Davenport's full-time
and only coach.
Instead, the USTA •
concentrated on Billie Jean King. ·
the coach of the wornen's tennis .
team, and thus, so did NBC.
"Van't Hof is a former USTA
coach who decided he could do
better in the private sector," said:.
Ken Stuart, Palisades Club
owner.
Davenport reportedly was
asked not to mention Van't Hof's
name in any discussion.
