drawn by the state to begin the

Both schools will begin the

The elementary school level·

well, with 96 transfers hOi'lored
and the remaining 47 students on

already begun at their new school

students where they want to be. •
The Board will priontize and
list the items that they deoded
they want to take action on from I their weekend retreat. Those lists
should be posted in the next cou-

Apparently, I misunderstood
the budget line item for the Board

involved m an issue that has lo do
with academics. The upshot is
that d comnuttee is going to be
formed to study the issue and
come up with recommendabons_
The comnuttee will include teach-
ers, students, pa.rents, and staff
from each of the four high
schools. Some of the ISsues that I
hope are addiessE!Q are:
· • How c;an we rd.I.Se our expec-
tabons for every ~tudent so that
the honors course cumculum
becomes the norm7
• Can we come to consensus
about what consbtutes an honors
class, no matter which campus 1t
is on, and teach and grade
accordingly?
• Should an A m an honors
course result m something other
than a 57 Should it get a maxi-
mum of 4 1/2 points?
• Will there be gatekeepers to
get into an honors class, and will
a student who does not chose to
take an honors class at one grade
level be precluded from taking
one the next year?
• Should we be fotusing only
on the UC system of weighting
honors classes or should we take
a ,broader perspective?
• If runth-and 10th-grade hon-
ors classes aren't ngorous, why
don't we make them rigorous and
rdlse the standards for our stu-
dents?
• U teachers are giving grades
as a sign of encouragement in
honors classes in the ninth and
·10th grade, is ijlat a practice that
we should continue?
• If students can't get into chaJ-
lengmg classes, be they honors or
AP classes, because there are too
mdfly student.s trymg to take
them, shouldn't we add more sec-
lions? • u Jess than half or the top 100
ranked seruors at Newport Har-
bor High School have taken any
honors classes, does the current
system reflect and give cred.lt to
those who have done the most
work?

The Newport Harbor I Ugh
football team played quar-
antine defense Saturday
night and reCOJd-setting
Sweetwater quarterback
Reuben Mendoza found
hlmself standing on ground
zero.
Mendoza, who amassed a
San Diego Section single-game
record 497 passing yards last
week, was harried by the
Sailors' front four and haunted
by the Harbor secondary in
Newport's decisive 34-2 non-
league home triumph.
The Vlctory improved the
Tars, ranked No. 7 in Orange
County and No. 2 in CIF South-
ern Section Division VI, to 3-0
for the third straight season, the
sixth time in the last seven
years.
It also left an impression on
the visiting Red Devils (1-2),
who had lots of futility and frus-
tration to share on the long bus
ride home to National City.
Some of that frustration sur-
faced in the final moments,
when Sweetwater was nagged
six times for either personal
fouls or unsportsmanWce con-
duct. •n was a great challenge,"
said Newport defensive tackle
Mike Warther, part of the fow-
man pass rush which kept Men-
doza on his heels for much of
the evening. •But I was a little
surprised. I thought (Sweetwa-
ter) would be a tougher team."
To a man, the Harbor defense
proved worthy of the challenge,
reducing an offensive machine
which had scored 86 points m
two previous wins to a sputter-
ing le mon . The visitors never
got past Newport's 29-yard line.
•I thought our secondary did
a great job." summed up New-
port Coach J eff Brinkley, now

Mendoza firushed 13 of 28 for
144 yards, but suffered three
sacks for 24 yards in losses and
the aforementioned three picks.

yards total offense (29 on the
ground) and heralded wideout
Marlon Dorn had three recep-
tions for 43 yards, well below his
seven-catch, 176-yard average

"I was really unpressed with
ow secondary,• Sdld Newport
senior defensive end Cooper
Wise, who had two sacks.
"Clayton (a 3uruor free saiety,
who added the other pick) and

games.·
Comerback Oscar Garc1a

son also ensured there'd be no
Red Devil fireworks, while Jine-
bac kers Lucas Kerr, Shawn
O'Donnell (one near-intercep-
tion m the Oa t), Brant Hill and
Mike Tunney, as well as tackle
Mike Marshall, added to a solid
defensive performance.
End Steve McCarthy had the
other. sack and returned an
errant shotgun snap 10 yards for
the defense's second touchdown.

an u~t. Newport Harbor High's WAter polo
team got that chance in the SOUth Coait
Tournament finals against top-ranked Long
Beach Wtlson on Saturday after Wilson's top
player was ejected from the game.
But Wilson proved why it is so highly
regarded with a ·10·9 victory at Newport
Harbor.
"When you lose your best player early in
the game,• Barnett said, "it can have a
tremendous impact on the outcome. This
win showed what a great team the"y are
because they still beat us.•
The player in questi~n, senior Tony
Azevedo, is one of the most highly recruited
players in the nation. Azevedo was given a
game misconduct ejection with 1:45 left in
tlle first quarter.
With Azevedo gone, someone would
have to step up and lead the team. Albert
Garde was up to the t.uk.
The score w.is tied, 2-2, early in the ieC·
ond ~ when Gard4 caught fire. He
iCOfiilat 4:08 for a one goal lead. After Jeff
NeRDith added a goal, Garcia scored on a
counterattack and" then agam from two-
meters for a 6-2 Wilson lead with 50 seconds
left bi the second quarter.
Tbe Sailors gofa goal from Kevin Becker
at the start of the third, but Garcia, who had
six goals on the day, continued to win the
baWe ll two meters, scoring at 5:38 for a 7-.
2 lead. • ·we finally had to put (Gary) Conwell on
him and that rea)iy helped,• Barnett said.
"Conwell is ~ and a gOod athlete.•
The switch worked and Clllowed Newport
Harbor (5-2) to mount a cornebclck charge.
Tripp Pitzgeorge tipped in a shot by
Becker, then Jeff Leeper followed up with a
score to cut it to 7-5.
Wl1son scored again, but Wtlson goalie
Jaison Robinson was unable to stop an
attack by the Sailors and was forced to take
the ball underwater. The ensuing penalty
shot was put in by Leeper and the score was
8-6 at the end of the quarter.
One reason for the charge was Newport's
ability to score with a man advantage. •we
went over our mistakes from last time and
have r~y improved that aspect of our
game," Barnett said.
Becker continued his bot streak with a
steal ~ a break.ilway. that cut the lead to
OQI Jfttti·,;20 to play.
WU.00 reestablished some breathing
room on goals by Garcia and Nesuuth.
But the Sailors would not s&ay down and
continUed tQ thte8ten an upset. CanweU
scored frOm two meten; on a blind lob shot
over • defender and th~ goalie. Brandon
HaifsOD then tip~ a high pass into the net
and.the score was 10-9 with 2:54 left.
The Sailors liad some chances to tie the
score, but Pltzgeorge had a shot go off the ,, •
O"ossbu and Peetz's shot from two m~ters
was saved by Robinson to seal the victory
for WillOD (7-0).
•This game tested our mettle," Barnett
said. "But losing Azevedo made a big cliJ.

said Howell, who had to fight the

Mesa piled~p a 42-8 lead with
more than 17 minutes remaming.
·we started putting backups in
and my defensive coaches want-

don't like giving up touchdowns.
And my offensive coaches want-

There were plenty of posiuves
for the Mustangs, including the
play of senior Ricky Martin, who
occupied the flip side of Weir's
offensive position change.
Martin impressed Howell by
running the offense effectively
and also had three of his team's
four interceptions.
"He didn't have a big rught
