A s most of yott probably
know, the Republican
presidential candidate
Bob Dole, who's probably bask-
ing in the San Diego sun today
as the Republican NationaJ Con-
vention gets under way, has
picked a running mate.
And unfortunately for New-
port Beach, it isn't Congressman
Christopher Cox, but former
New York Congressman Jack
Kemp.
But at least the endless specu-
lation over who that s1delock
would be, which had been as
wild as a Little League pitcher, is
over.
First the media hinted 1t was
going to be former Gen. Colin
Powell. Then he said no. Then
there was talk that it was going
to be New J ersey Gov. Christine
Todd Whitman. She too said no. :
Then more names were tossed
about like crazy.
Former South Carolina Gov.
Carroll Campbell, Pennsylvarua
Gov. Tom Ridge, former drug
czar and Education Secretary Bill
Bennett, former Defense Secre-
tary Dick Cheney, Gov. Pete Wil-
son, Attorney General Dan Lun-
gren, even Elizabeth Dole, the
candidate's wife, were touted as
running mate material.
And, of course, there was Cox.
Some published reports called
Cox a "made-to-order" running
mate and a strong pick in the
deep-in-delegates state of Cali-
fornia.
In fact, last week d CNN-Time
Internet-poll showed Cox edging
best Californian for the veep-m-
waiting choice.
But odds are Dole's probably
not an Internet junkie.

and caffeine.
The City Council meeting
will begin at 7 p.m . in the coun-
cil chambers at 3300 Newport

Here's a list of some of the
items as they appeat on the
agenda:
• Classifying the Balboa The-
ater at 101 E. Balboa Blvd. as a
historical site and 'place the the-
ater in the city's register of his-
torical property. The theater was
built in 1921 and will be the old-
est operating theater in Orange
County when it reopens.
• Amending the agreement
with Schaefers Ambulance Ser-
vice Inc.. the city's secondary
provider for emergency ambu-

The council will also consider
denying Schaefers' request to

regard to the sizes of boat slips
to allow for more flexibility.

lations with regard to residential

home for treating addicted gam-
blers that recently opened in the
Blutts to the surprise of several
residents.
• Extending the moratorium
on the residential condominium
qmversions on Balboa Island for
an additional 45 days. This
extension will allow staff more

condo conversions which sever-
al island residents are con-
cerned about.

Speical iriterests flock to fair grounds
By Jennifer Armstrong, Daily Pilot
N ot many people could
say -or were willing to
admit -that they
attended both special events at
the Orange County Fair-
grounds Sunday.
Those attending the Bird
Expo came to buy cages, bird-
seed and birds, and they
weren't flocking over to the
nearby California 1\-uck Jam-
boree. Similarly, those who
came to check out trucks and
engines weren't running over
to see the birds.
But event organizers
remained optimistic that they
would attract some cross-over
crowds.
~n does help out to have
other shows goirlg on,• said
Lance Bryson, who has been
bringing his Bird Expo to the
fairgroun~ three times a year
for seven years. •Today,
maybe a lot of the girl friends
who came with their
b.oytrlends to the truck show
will come over to see the
birds ...
Most visitors, however,
laughed at the suggestion that
they might go to the Bird Expo
from the Th.tck Jamboree or
vice-versa.
Carone Wescoat drove out
to the Expo from Redondo
Beach to find a mate for her
bird, not a part for her Ford
pick-up. She wandered about
the crowded aisles of birds,
bird toys. cages and bird food.
then walked right past the
jamboree to her car.
Chris Moody was at the
Jamboree looking for Ford
trucks with his wife and infant
daughter. He said he's •mto
trucks." He also said he wasn't
into birds, so the Bird Expo
was not on his Sunday agenda.
The atmosphere at the
Th.tck Jamboree differed dra-
matically from that of the Bird
Expo. Loud music blasted, and
booths offered everything from
auto safety tips to a chance to
be photographed with scantily
dad women.
Bryson estimated that about
1,000 bird lovers walked
through the Expo. 1Tuck Jam-
boree organizers did not have
a ticket sales count but expect·
ed about 7 ,000 jamboree par-
ticipants.
Jamboree workers said the
steady flow of people into their
event came more from the
Market Place on the other side
of the fairgrounds than from
the Bird Expo.

14. I saw "Star Wars" in a
movie theater.
15. I would rather watch the
Leaming Channel than MTV.
16. KROQ is finally starting
to bug me.
17. Even though I am out of
school: single and live 10 min-
utes from the office, I still can-
not find the time to have a life.
18. No homework.
19. I can still pass for 23.
20. I'd take Magic, Kareem,
Worthy and Rambis over Sbaq
any day.
21. Sunscreen is a new word
in my vocabulary.
22. Wrinkles are surfacing
after the acne finally went
away.
23. It's possible to go to bed
before midnight.
24. I remember disco (and
John Thavolta), the first time.
25. This is the wrong side of
21 but the right s}de of 30.
All in all, I am younger than
most but older than some. I
know the movie is just starting
but the first 25 years went by so
fast I feel like I was getting
popcorn during the previews.
Unofficial No. 26: I just wrote
the worst metaphor of my life.
Maybe I am over the hill.

Pilot uninjured after
crash landing in field
A Newport Beach man walked
away uninjured after be crash-
landed his small plane early Sat-
urday in a Tustin field when he
ran out of fuel, 1\lstin police said.
Christopher Welch, 33, landed
his Cessna at 12:16 a .m., about
five miles short or his destination
at John Wayne Airport, Lt. Joseph
Garcia said. Welch wanted to
land at the U.S. Marine Corps Alf
Station in Tustin when he realized
he was short on fuel, but station
officials told him they could not
accomodate his landing, police
reports said.
Instead, he landed in a newly
plowed field in southwest Tustin,
just south of Edinger Avenue near
the 55 freeway. He was returning
home from Lone Pine, located in
central California east or the Sier-
ra Nevada Mountains.
The plane's wings were dam-
aged in the landing, so a flatbed
truck was used to remove the
plane from the field, Garcia said.

Damage minor in
Sunday industrial fire
Damage from a fire at a Costa
Mesa industrial complex Sunday
was kept to a minimwn because
of a prompt report from someone
in a nearby building, Costa Mesa
firefighters said.
The fire began at Pope Spindle
Service, unit L at 3184 Airway
Ave., when heat-producing
machinery ignited a wood shell
near the rear of the building, Bat-
talion Chief Jim Ellis said. Some-
one working in another unit in the
complex reported seeing smoke
and water running out of the back
door at 3:43 p.m.
Firefighters extinguished the
fire within 15 minutes. They con-
tained the water in the area until
the Newport Beacb Fire Depart-
ment Hazardous Materials Pro-
gram determined that chermcals
from the factory were not danger-
ous.
Because the hre had not
burned long, 1t caused little dam-
age. No one was inside the build-
ing at the time of the fire.

RESISTANCE
If a battery fails regularly. a
simple test of the car's electrical
winng may point out the problem.
In order for the battery to stay
charged , current from the
alternator must flow to the battery.
If there is a bad connection
between the alternator's positive
terminal and the battery's positive
terminal, the battery can
eventually go dead. To see 1f a
bad connection exists. the auto
techn1c1an w ill connect a
voltmeter to the alternator and the
battery's positive terminal. Any
voltage reading represents a
voltage drop. which is a difference
in the voltage provided by the
alternator and the remaining
charge when 1t reaches the
battery. The negative side must be
tested, as well. If high resistance
1s indicated in either test, the
connections must either be
cleaned or repaired. Otherwise,
the battery may continue to go .
experience hard starting, or there
may be other electrical system
problems.
HI~ If 1es11no an alternator with an
ammeter (which measures curren1
flow on amps) 1nd1cates that an
alternator 1s producing current belOw

LOCKING IN
ANTILOCK BRAKES
Originally developed and
patented in Germany during the
1930s for use in aircraft, antilock
braking systems (ABS) were first
introduced into passenger cars in
the mid· 1980s and are now
available on all but a small
number of vehicles. ABS helps
drivers maintain control of their
cars In emergency situations by
preventing the wheels from
locking up under hard braking.
The system accomplishes this by
engaging and disengaging the
brakes rapidly when sensors
detect wheel slippage. This
technique 1s similar to the
traditional method of pumping the
brake pedal to avoid skidding on
slippery surfaces, but ABS can
perfoon this task more quickly (up
to 18 times pet second) and more
precisely than the best dnver. In
order for ABS to work, drivers
must keep their feet firmly
depressed on the brake pedal
without letting up. Any attempt to
pump the brake pedal will mee'9ty
defeat ABS and the impl"OYtd
safety edge that goes with It.
When you have ABS brakes, you
