Giving police a pat on the back
What a great police department we have here in Newport
Beach. I am always reading in your paper about the department's
heroic efforts bringing great results, and we are very proud to live
in this great area.
· Then one day, we are in the news wltti'·~ recent grab-and-run
of an 18-karat gold Rolex President watch valued at S16,000~
young man jerked the precious metal watch from my sales a i·
ate and dashed out our door We immediately called the police.
Within minutes, several officers, detectives, sergeants and
police dogs -about 30 individuals -were hard at work. Yes,
after a four-hour search. the thief was apprehended.
After professional. aggressive and persistent work by detec-
tives, nine days later our gold watch was found hidden along the
thief's trail, where he had ditched it.
A very special thank you for a job well done, especially to Sgt.
Neil Harvey, officers John Hudson and Mark Everton, Detective
Tom Gazsi and the 20-.plus of Newport's finest. Thank you for
sending the message that Newport Beach will not tolerate these
types of people and their actions against our businesses, our resi-

Cheers and God bless.

Danger part of job for deep-sea diVer
T he rerent crash of the
Sw1ssair plane off Halifax,
Nova Scotict, dredged up
°!emonel) of my rnend, Mike
Greg, a deep-sea diver who was
building a mannc railway in •
Pago Pago harbor when my wife
and J were living there. •
I think Mike ledrned to swim
bt?tore he ledmed to y.'dlk and
led!ned to dive before he learned
to swim That go<'s with being
from Novd Scotia. DiVUlg to ship-
wrecks 1s an inlegrt,tl Pdft of
Nova Scot1dn life.
Novd Scob·d has quite a his ory
of Shipwrecks. By rough courlt
there have been morn than 5,000
shipwrecks m its history. Part of
this lS because Nova Scotia is on
the arc of the North Atlantic slup-
piog lane)), which head out to sea
from there. On uleir way, ships
mu'>l trdverse Sable Island, a long
bank of shifting Sdnd that is wdl-
known as·d grdveydid of ships.
Mikelwas completely casual
about his lite as ct diver. He
would dismiss as d w~lk in the
park ctivmg 10 30-toot swells to
work on the propeller of d ship.
Imagine, if you will, going 30
THE VE ID I CT
feet in the air. then 30 feet under
water, hanging onto whatever
you can hang on to while work-
mg on a damaged-propeller.
He did mention, rather casual-
ly, diving for sheets of copper
found in a wrecked World War II
ship. The ship was on its way to
England loaded with thousands
of pounds of copper sheets,
each about 6 feet square and a
quarter-inch thick.
Mike would be on the bottom
of the ocean in about 200 or 300
feet of water. He would load
sheets of copper onto a pallet, and
the man on the mother ship
would haul the pallet up. Unfortu-
nately, if there were heavy seas
on the surface, some of the sheets
w ould come loose. They didn't
simply drop straight down. Rath-
er, they came down in a swooping
fashion much like leaves from a
tree. As they came down they
could have cut Mike's air and life
lines. If so, he was stuck on the
bottom with no w ay to get up. Or
one of these sheets of metal could
simply cut him in two. •
Thing of Sable Island ship-
wrecks, Mike went to the North
Sea, where he worked on the oil
rigs. The weather is simply awlul
in that area. Diving was haz-
ardous However, as Mike said,
the real danger was leaping from
the rigs to the boats that earned
the divers from oil ng to oil rig.
The fatality ,-ate was high. Falling
into the North Sea while encum-
bered with heavy diving equip-
ment was almost always fatal.
So Mlke came to Pago Pago.
Warm water. No swell. No prob·
Jems. However, Mike again faced
instant death. He was on the bot-
tom of the harbor when he heard
some noise above him. He '
stepped aside, and a heavy piece
of equipment thudded down into
the bottom of the harbor just
where he had been standing. A
deep-ilea divor is never safe.
A few years ago my wife and J ..
visited Mike and lus wife m Hali-
fax. We were relieved to hear
that Mike was no longer diving
to shipwrecks. He was still work-
ing for the same diving company,
but no more shipwreclts.
However, we noticed a picture
on the mantel. A ship was stuck
in ice that appeared to be 8 or 10
feet thick. Mike would go through
that hole to work on the ship's
propeller. Nothing to it. Just one
problem. The water was so cold
that the diver had to come out in
Just a few minutes or he would
clie. Again, just a shrug.
There am't no such Uung as
risk-free m the world of deep-
sea divers, espeoally those from
Halifax
