A TOUCH OF CLAS
•Ensign Principal Scott Paulsen, who spent years m~g his
.mark on the district, is headed for some resf and relaxation.
By Julie Ross Cannon, Daily Pilot
The books and binders around Scott
Paulsen's office are tagged with ayp-
tic fragments of yellow legal paper.
The personal notes serve as tangible
reminders of the thousands of lives the
retiring principal has changed during his
34 years in education.
M All of the sudden I realized there are so
many things I do that isn't written down,•
said Paulsen, sitting behind his desk Tues-
day at Ensign Intermediate School. "If I
died, no one would kno\V what all this is
and a lot of things would go undone. How
unfair is that?~
Having announced his retirement last
week, the 56-year-old icon of the Newport-
Mesa Unified School District is busily
preparing a written legacy of the educa-
tional programs which have lauded his
school recognition across the nation.
And while Paulsen was worried parents
and other educators would see his move as
abandonment, he said the reactions have
been the opposite.
"I am touched by the community
response,• he said. "People were calling
the house thig weekend by the zillions. We
finally had to stop answering the phone.•
The decision to retire, one of the hardest
Paulsen said he bas made, comes four
weeks before the start of the new school
year, which would have been Paulsen's

NEWPORT BEACH -The mayor's
idea to hire volunteer aides to assist
council members with their work-

by· his colleagues.
Each council member could
decide for themselves if they wanted

Hedges said.
Assistant City Manager Peggy

issue after the mayor requested
one in June. Ducey found in most
cities in the county, with the excep-
tion of Irvine, council members
relied on city staff to assist them,
not aides.

P ractically everyolle who
lives in Southern California
came from somewhere else
-including me.
A lot of us were exposed to
Lotus Land during World War D
and couldn't wait to get back.
My family didn't make it until
1959, but moving to California
didn't take the Midwest out of
me. Par from it.
I discovered a long time ago
the best way to deal with the
excesses of Southern California is
to get a periodic Midwestern fix.
So for more than 35 years, I've
been disproving Thomas WoUe's
contention that you can't go
home again. And I've just
returned from my umpteenth
shot of Indiana adrenalin.
For the first 15 years my family
lived in Newport Beach, we rent-
ed our house in the sum.mer and
moved into a cottage we owned
on a northern Indiana lake. My
children were thus raised m two
totally different cultural environ-
ments: the upper-middle class
Orange Coast and rural Indiana. l
like to think it was a good -iI
somewhat confusing -mix.
During those lake years, l
would use the morning and
evening to write, and we would
always play a softball game in
the afternoon. Ev~ry day. We
kept meticulous records, and vis-
itors to the lake were always
drafted into playing softball. We
sent a good many of these visi-
tors home aching in every joint
from using muscles they hadn't
employed in years.
A whole raft of lake children
grew up playing our softball
game. One of them died. Several
went off to Vietnam. Some
stayed in Indiana and got factory
jobs and raised children. Some
went off to college and became

and it was a warm and rich
experience.
The game, itseH -once full ot
scintillating plays by supple young
athletes -was something less
than a thing of beauty. The kids
who grew up in this game are
now in their mid-to-late 40s and
some are not in the best of shape.
There was a fair amount of hard
breathing and dropped fly balls.
Their children, who also came to
play, were a mixed bag but mostly
not up to the early skills of their
fathers and mothers. It pleased me
that my two grandsons were an
exception -and clearly the stars,
both afield and at bat.
The weekend ~as full of good
talk, breaded pork tenderloin
sandwiches (someone could
make a fortune by mtroducing
this delicacy here) and a total
absence of the divisive issues
that are driving this country
today. We did a lot of hanging
out that reminded me of the
wonderful indolence -an art
form that hasn't made it to
Southern California -of Indiana
summers.
When we parted on Sunday
afternoon. it was with the unlike-
ly hope that we might once
again put together the effort to
assemble in the same spirit.
l stayed on alone for several
days to soak Indiana even more
deeply into my pores. I walked
the back roads of the lake, hung
out at the wonderfully peaceful
little library in Colwnbia City,
saw some friends who have cho-
sen to stay in Indiana, visited my
old high school in Fort Wayne

• Heads and Ziemanns
are double trouble for
State Games foes.
By Barry Faulkner, Daily Pilot
The .California State Games
turned into a sister act last week-
end as fonner Newport Harbor
High standout:S Cara and Gina
Heads (weightlifting), as well as
Costa Mesa residents Rachael
and Bianca Ziemann (track and
field), topped a list of local com-
petitors With sterling efforts.
Cara Heads, the 70 kilogram
junior national champion the last
two years, tied the junior national
snatch record of 85 kilos (187
pounds) Saturday at lrvine's
Hyatt Regency Hotel. Competing
th\fie 76 10.lo dfvision along wilfi
her older sister, afte r missing the
70 kilo weight limit by two
pounds, Cara also hoisted 95 kilos
in the clean and jerk {209 pounds)
to take the gold medal in both
lifts, as well as the combined.
~1 was very happy, because it's
early in the quote weightlifting
season and I'm snatching 85,"
said Cara Tuesday, already back
in Berkeley, where she'll be a
sophomore hammer and ruscus
thrower at Cal next spring.
•Actually, this competition was
supposed to be a laid-back event
for us to see where we're at. But,
·in the warm up room, everything
was feeling light, so I decided f~
go for it."
The 85 kilo snatch was a per-
sonal best in competition for
Cara, whose best in the clean and
jerk is 102 kilos (nearly 224 112
pounds). She just missed match-
ing that clean and jerk mark Sat-
urday, cleaning the weight on two
attempts, but failing to jerk it
overhead.
Gina, a redshirt sophomore
shot putter and hammer thrower
at Stanford, exceeded expecta-
tions in her first competition in 16
months, winning bronze in the
clean and jerk and the combined.
Having resumed training less
than two months ago after reha-
bilitating a tom ACL, the 1994
Sea View League and Newport-
Mesa District Female Athlete of
the Year lifted 90 kilos ( 198
pounds) in the clean and jerk. Her
career best in competition is 97 .5
kilos (214 1/2 pounds).
Gina, the 1994 senior national
champion in the 83 kilo class, also
cleared 67.5 kilos (148 112
pounds) in the snatch. where her
best is 75 kilos (165 pounds).
wKnowing I haven't been back
that long and I'm almost as strong
as I was gave me a real ego
boost,· Gina sald Tuesday from .,
the Bay Area.
The Ziemanns, 13-year-old
twins who compete nationally in
the pentathlon, chose to partici-
pate only in the field eventS Sat-
urday at Trabuco Hills High, com-
bining for two gold, two silver
and two bronze medals.
Rachael earned gold in the
javelin with a throw of 87-7, then
edged Bianca by virtu.e...of iewer
misses for the high jump gold,
after both posted a top clearance
of 5-0. Rachael also put the shot
29-1 to finish third.
Bianca added a shot put silver
medal (30-6) to her high jump sil-
ver, and earned bronze in the
javelin with a heave of 80-4.
Kevin Artz, a 10-year-old
Newport Beach resident, capped
a busy weekend by winning a
gold medal in the 50-yard breas-
troke for boys ages 9-10 Sunday
at Laguna Niguel's Crown Valley
Regional Recreation Center pool.
Artz, also an acclaimed runner
who finished fourth in the 400
and 800 at the recent USA 'Il"ack
:and Field Youth Nationals, was
~~ed to compete in the State
Ga.rriets)j{K), Saturday, but results
were tl.Aaailal?le from meet offi-
cials as ol Tuesdav -and Artz could
not be reached: "'~1 ""
Artz cut short his p~pation
in Saturday mornffig;s South
Coast Swim Conference Finals at
El Toro High in order to make the ;
800 at 1rabuco Hills.
His winning time in the State
Games breaststroke was 41.0 sec-
onds, more than a full second bet-
ter than second-place Peter Baer.
Costa Mesa's Nathan Todd
earned a silver medal in the 8-
and-under Taekwondo forms
competition Saturday at Magno-
lia High, while Emily Jacob, also
of Costa Mesa, finished 12th in
her basic figure skating event Sat-
