Steinberg tried to offer some
common sense to the logic that
soldiers and sailors know they're
not in a democratic situation
when they take the oath to serve
their country, but his message
was pretty well drowned out by
the neo-liberals, who thought
this was really a terrible thing
that various items of pornogra-

fighting men and women.

that teachers have to be class-,

Many of the teachers dis-

I've been heanng positive

two schools a week, and he is

SAFETY
CONTINUED FROM 1
what we do.~
People actually had the opportunity to put
th81B1elves m the shoes of public safety oJh·
cen. Kids stood m line to handle a one-inch
wide fire bos'e. The ones who weren't afraid
of heights rappelled down a three-story con·
crete building. Strapped with harnesses, kids
gingerly made their way back to earth.
. "You just hold on and 1ump, • said 12-
year-old Josh Wlute. • l wasn't too nervous. It
was pretty easy."
Aaron Thlmbult, 14, was eager to Jump off
· a building safely. He wanted to operate th~
ladder on the fire truck but he settl~ for the
Jump.
•I've always wanted to be a fuefighter,"
he sa1d. ·seeing what they do on days like
this really motivates me."
Firefighters wanted the crowd to feel the
heat -literally. They staged a mock fue
inside a box trailer that had furniture.
Doused in gasoline, the structure burned for
a short tune. The public was able to see the
process from the 911 call to the actual fire-
fighting. Members from the fire dcademy
assisted three Newport Beach firefighters, all
of whom wore about 40 pounds of eqwp-
m ent and gear.

Eagles bring verbal ribbing and well-intentioned

Words can, in
fact, hurt as badly
as a helmet to the

critical classmates or from coach-

The Estancia High football
team, ears burning, put a tempo·

rught, rall}-'ing past Anaheun for a
20-14 triumph, its first of the sea-

•When you're 0-3, you take a
ribbing at school,• first-year
i:agles coach Dave Perkins said.
•Other kids can give you a hard
time. And, no matter how much
the coaches ..trY._ "to offer encour-
agement. that stuff only goes so
far. No matter what (coaches) say,
a loss still lingers for a day or so
the next week at practice."
Perkins anticipates a collective
bounce in the Eagles' step today,
as they begin preparation for the
final nonleague contest oJ the
campaign against Santa Ana Val-
ley, which also won for the first ·
time Friday.
•1 felt so badly for the kids
(during the winless start);because
they've continued to work hard
and they've been overcoming a
lot of stuff,• Perkins said. •This
win should make them feel better
about themselves and that's what
it's all about."

NEwPORT BEACH -
With its fo\lrth impre§-
sive victory in as many
starts, combined with
No. 1-ranked Santa Margarita's loss,
chances are good the No. 2 Newport
Harbor High football team will ascend
to the top spot in the CIF Southern Sec-
tion DiVJSion VI poll published Tues-
day.
And while it's hardly cause for cele-
bration for the even-keeled Sailors,
Coach Jeff Bnnkley adrruts it's a trib-
ute, however triVlal.

against the Colonists, who scored
on pass pla'ys of 4'0 and 42 yards
early in each of the first two quar-
ters to seize seven-point leads.
"We'fe young in the secondary
and we made some mistakes,"
Perkins said. •Their quarterback
(Robert Ramirez) bad been strug·
gling, but he looked like Dan
Marino against us. Our secondary
rallied, though, and made some
plays, especially at the end."
Perkins said junior cornerback
John Alderete set a school record
with three interceptions, includ-
ing thefts on back-to-back drives
to close out Perkins' first win at
the school.

•Not bad for a kid playing his
first year of football," Perkins said
of Alderete.
Perkins also praised a huge
fourth-quarter sack by .Kyle West-
man, which came one play before
Alderete's second interception of
'the game ..
•(Westman) pushed a double
team into the quarterback to get
that sack. I thought the key to the
game was our ability to put pres-
sure on their quarterback in the
second ball after we didn't in the
first," added Perkins, who was
also pleased with the Eagles' run
defense, which yielded just 28
yards on the ground.

polo team stormed through
the weekend and won The
Charger Cup Frosh/Soph
Tournament at El Toro.
On Saturday, the Sea Kings
were seeded in the championship
pool with Santa Margarita and
Newport Harbor.
Powered by third quarter goals
by Cavan Cuyler and Chase
Emery, Corona del Mar defeated
Newport Harbor in the opening
match, 5-3. Both Cuyler and
Emery had two goals.
The defense, anchored by
goalie Sherwin Kim, who had five
saves, held the Sailors scoreless in
the second ball.
Following that win, CdM got
three, fourth-quarter insurance
goals in an 8-4 win over Santa
Margarita that clinched the
townament title.
Adam Buzolich scored thtee
goals while Emery and Chriss

As for the townament. it was
the first opportunity for the Sailors
to play Sea View League
opponents CdM and Santa
Margclrita.
Success is, however, relative, as
Bnnkley observed after Fnday's 33-0
tnumph over Visiting Glendora
• Foothill, 5-1, and Aliso Niguel,
8-1.
"We may have been missing a
few players,• Cutler said
(besides the loss of Worthing, a
small number of players were
benched by Varisty Coach ~ill
Barnett for disciplinary reasons),
"But both CdM and Santa
Margarita are capable teams and
beat us fair and square."
"I'm not trying to nit-pick," Brinkley
said. "But maybe the expectations are
a l.tttle higher here than some places.
We did some good things, but 1 was
concerned about our practice prepara-
tion. I know what it's going to take
when we get mto the Sea View
,League. It's going to be a war."
Among the good things agamst the
Tartans, was an efficient running
game, which fueled scoring drives of
14, rune and eight plays.
There was also the return of talent-
ed Junior offensive tackles Robert Cole
and Blair Jones, the latter having
missed the first three games With
recumng headaches.
"Getting Blair back was a big bonus
and it was also ruce to have Robert
(who sat out the third game with bone
chips m his elbow) back," Brinkley
said .
Brinkley also smgled out the strong
contribution of junior long snapper
Chad Smith (filling in for in1ured
Nathan M,atlin) and junior middle line-
' backer Mike 1\lnney.
"Tunney played well enough that
we might th.ink about starting him and
moving Brant Hill back to the defen-
sive line (where he sparkled as a
junior)."
Senior quarterback Steve Gorman
sprp.med an ankle, whi.cb could poten-
tial.ly sideline him for Fnday's non-
league finale with Magnolia.
But senior backup Eddie Johnson,
who threw an artLstic 37-yard touch-
down pass agamst Glendora, has
Brinkley's full confidence, should he be
