Silva supporters have charac-

candidate.
Growth, development and the
enwonme nt are three issues tbdt
really set the two candidates
apart, Padberg said.
But others such as Tom
Naughton, president of the Air-
port Working Group, said Sulli·
van bas used his anti -airport
stance just to appeal to South
County residents and get thetr
cash for his campaign.
Ed Laird , president of Coating
Resources Corp. in Huntington
Beach, said he th.inks Sullivan is d
one-issue candidate also, but his
issue 'is preservation of the Bolsa
Chica wetlands, not the airport.
"The airport is just a m..eans of
funding Bolsa Chica for him,"
Laird said.
Sullivan admits that p1eserving
Bolsa Chica is a priority for him. A
plan to build 1,200 homes on the
Bolsa Chica mesa is another issue
that separates him from Silva,
who is "pro-development.• Sulli-

COSTA MESA -When Costa
Mesa High and Estdneta met in
the Paofic Coast League opener
m girls volleyball on Tuesday,
there was11't really a cross-town
rivd.l.ry at stake.
Both programs are working to
re build with a young nucleus. so
the match became more of a
bench-mark to see how far along
both are as the league season
opens.
Costa Mesa dppears to be in
better shape, cruising to a 15-8,
15-9, 15-5, victory over the visit-
ing Eagles.
The Mustangs (5·2, 1-0 in
league), who have only one senior
on the roster, struggled to find a
Vollifilil
rhythm in the fl.I'St game, but took
advantage of Eagle miscues and
sohd senring to wm the game.
From there, Costa Mesa had
little trouble getting out in front
for the rmaI two games. But the
Mustangs' inexpenence showed
as Costa Mesa had trouble closmg
out both ~ames, at µmes looking
disinterested ln putting together
winning combinations.
"It's a constclnt problem and
they know 1t, • Coach Yvette
Ybarra said. ·we try and get them
to push hard from start to finish,
but they al.most get lax and just
try and get through it.~
The problem was most preva-
lent in game three, where Costa
Mesa jumped out to. a 6-2 lead,
then struggled to get the seventh
point. A kill by Katie Roche final-
ly put the Mustangs m front, 7-4.
The Eagles (0-3, 0-1), who also
feature just one senior, continued
to struggle and Costa Mesa was
eventually able to put them away.
"We've been trying to solve
our problem by doing quick drills
and using a lot of motivation,•
Ybarra said. "But sometimes they
1ust can't keep up .I.he intensity.
They are also very young and still
learning.•
Despite the lack of drive, Ybar-
ra was pleased with some of the
fundamental' skills her team
exhibited.
·we have really good s'erve-
receive passing," Ybarra said.
"We are also getung much better
on making the transition to
defense.•
Evelyn Powers led the offense
with 12 kills and had three digs
on defense. Brook Shanley bad 20
assists and Casey Petersen had
six kills and one dJg.
For the Eagles, Sara Deming
had hve kills and Lauren Cassity
had four.

NEWPORT BEACH -As if Wood-

strong enough this season, Newport Har-
bor (pund out Tuesday the Warriors are
evenl>etter than advertiSed.
On the swprising strength of thel! sin-
gles, the Warriors defeated the host
Sailors in Sed View League action, 11·7,
and perhaps made a statement to Corona
del Mar next week.
Woodbndge (8-0, 2-0 m league),
ranked No. 2 in both the CIF Southern
Section Drvision I and Orange County
polls, swept Newport Harbor (5-4, 0-2) m
singles to take the inside track to the Sea
View title.
Cd.M, top-rnnkedr in the county and
No. 3 in ClF Division J, is strong m singles.
Woodbridge and the Sea Kings will meet
Oct. 13 at CdM.
Entering the season. competitors knew
about Woodbridge sophomore Susanna
Ungman and Junior Adriana Hockicko.
But no one had heard of Evangehna Son-
ano -not even Woodbridge Coac11 Joan
Willett.
Soriano, a freshman from Oearwater,
Aa., showed up in Willett's office two
days before• school started and asked,
•are you Coach Willett?• When iil.formed
she was in the right place, Soriano swd
softly, •1 play tennis.•
So far, so good: Soriano has yet to drop
a set, and against the Sailors she swept, 6-

·we were almost done with tryoub, •
Willett said. • Jt was a nice gilt. She
showed up nght on our doorstep. She
learned to play indoors in Alaska and on

Newport Harbor was led in doubles by
its No. 3 team of junior Jenny Meyer, a
Corona del Mar transfer, and freshman
Megan Hawkins. Meyer-Hawkins swept
~2. 7-6 (7-4), 6-4.
··We played pretty even in the first
round,• Newport Harbor Coach Aetcher
Olson said. •Natalie's set was real close
and we're strong in doubles. Woodbridge
is good all the way through.•
Newport Harbor's tough schedule con-
tinues when it hosts Santa Barbara today
and Dana Hills Oct. 12. "There's never a
dull moment," Olson said.
Bravennan, who was sick but played
anyway, lost her 4-0 edge in the~first set
against Ungman, who won six straight
games. Lingman also beat Braverman, 7-
5, in the consolations of the Southern Cal-
ifornia Sectionals in June.
Llngman was down 0-4 before coming
back to win, and the Warriors' doubles
team was behlnd 2-4 before winning in a
tie-breaker
·1 think the die was cast after that first
round, with (Lingman) being down love-
4, then Lopez and Stiefel came back and
won," Willett said. •Those were both very
pivotal (sets). When Michelle came off the
court, I told he r that was probably the
match right there.
Woodbridge was also playing without
one of its best p.layen. senior Danielle
Hustedt, who underwent a unique
surgery Sept. 28 to correct sweat glands
in ber hands. Hustedt could be ready by
the time Woodbridge plays top -ranked
