A GEM OF A POSTSCRIPT
Every year for Mother's Day,
Costa Mesa jeweler Michael Wat-
son sponsors his "Why Mom
Deserves a Diamond" essay con-
test. He encourages young peo-
ple in the second to 12th grades
to submit a poem or essay about
their mothers, and he presents a
one-quarter carat diamond as the
grand pnze, and gemstones to a
n umber of other winners.
Watson aJ:n printed up an
anthology this year or the 732
wmning entries (out of 4,615
countywide e ntries). The book
was available for parents, friends
and teachers to purchase
What did the generous jeweler
do with the money from the book
sale? He recently sent a check of
$2,000 to the Orange County
Public Library for use in buying
books on creative writing, self
expression, diamonds and gems
and adoption. The latter subject
is dear to Watson's heart because
he was adopted.

BALBOA -The idea of a his-

marks and points of interest
around Balboa Island and the
Peninsula is being embraced by
the community.
The plan's pioneers, Gay Was-

historian George Grupe; and Bal-

ing Friday morning at the Balboa
Pavilion to discuss goals and
ideas for the walking project. rare-tmd-

as the oldest home, which dates
back to the early 1900s, or a for-
gotten casino discovered when
the old hardware store was sand-
blasted.
The route would be printed in
brochures mapping out the tour
and modest signs would be
installed at various landmarks.
The mileage of the Peninsula,
Balboa and Llttle Balboa islands,
and the piers would also be
included in the brochure.
Donations are already coming
in to pay for the brochures and
graphic artists are lined up, an
enthusiastic Wassall said. Orga-
nizers hope to have the inaugural
walk in about three weeks.
Wassail said the 13 people
who attended the meeting
included representatives from a
number of local business organi-
zations.
While such a walking tour has
been desired for more than a
year, it wasn't until recently that
proponents put their plan to the
pavement.

When the burrow doesn't
feel so comfy anymore
I n one of my more msplriHg
moments years ago, I decid-
ed to flood my wife wjth
birthday presents, one for
each day of her birthday
week.
I rightfully figured that just
one birthday present wasn't
enough for my darling girl.
The practice became known
in the family as Barbara's
Birthday Bonanza.
One of the presents was
Bunny, a cuddly, sweet-~mil
ing cloth rabbit dressed in a
long, white fnlly dress.
Bunny would become my
ally when our conversations
would "escalate" from time to
time.
All l had to do was murmur,
"I wonder what Bunny is
thinking right now." It broke
the tension and my wife
would laugh nearly every
time.
Well, try as hard as she
might like, Bunny was power-
less to rescue us the other
night when we went to Irvine
Meadows to en1oy a little
Mozart.
As Bunny looked on, all
alone from her seat on a hall
tree, fast-working burglars -
who probably saw us leave
with our blanket and p1cmc
basket -broke into the
house.
They rifled through our
belongings and scattered the
stuff deemed unfit for thetr
taking on beds and floors.

it's no picnic, not for a product

W hen nm DeCinces and his

teammates return home
next week from an
Appalachian League road swing, they
are expected to room in luxury for the
season's final 10 games ... at the
Ramada Inn.
It should be quite a change from the
boot-camp atmosphere of the Bluefield
College dormitories, where players on
the short·se05on class-A affiliate of the
Orioles had stayed throughout the
campaign.
For DeCinces, it's a long way from
the good life in Corona del Mar, where
he grew up as the son of a major
leaguer, then experienced the comforts
of regular airplane travel while playing
for UCLA in the Pacific-10 Conference
baseball circuit.
In Bluefield, the Baltimore Orioles'
longtime affiliate, it's hot and humid in
the summer. "When you shower and go_
outside, you need another shower,"
DeCinces said Friday from Danville,
Va., where his league-leading squad is
playing the Atlanta Braves' affiliate.
While on the trip, the rest of the
players' belongings are being
safeguarded in the visiting clubll"1Se in
Bluefield, because school · soon

That's why they call it the bushes of

An appreciation from whence he
came will no doubt enhance upon
DeCinces' return to his real home next
month.
But while in the land of the

escapade, batting .305 with six home
runs and 29 RBI through Thursday's
competition, when Bluefield lost a 1-0
decision against Danville, cutting its
divisional lead to only four games.
DeCinces, former Corona del Mar
High all-~ar catcher, is playing third
base, first qase, catcher and designated
hitter. Baltimore's front office would like
to see DeCinces -whose father, Doug,
also began his professional baseball
career in Bluefield -play as many
positions as possible.
The Orioles are loaded with catchers
in their organization, along with a
couple of comer-player prospects, so if
DeCinces, who swings left-handed, can
hit, the organization will find a place for
him to play.
Though DeCinces was invited to
instructional ball in the off-season, he
will bypass the opportunity and finish
school at UCLA, where he plans to
major in history.
"Mentally, I'm tired as much as
anything," he said. "Going to
instructional ball would be great, and •
I'm happy to get invited, but I want to
get school out of the way, get physically
stronger and mentally refreshed."
DeCinces played four years at UCLA
(including a red-shirt season) and
played every summer in between.
Recently, his parents came for a visit.
"What an experience," said his
mother, Kristi. "(Bluefield) is where we
started, and it's the oldest minor league
franchise in all of baseball We go there
now, and there's· nm, in the same, old
ballpark. It had burned down 26 years
ago, but they rebuilt it just the way it
was. We walked in and people came up
to us, saying they remembered us."
Doug DeCinces, ~ow a real estate
developer, played 15 years in the big
leagues, a career that ended in 1987
with the St. Louis Cardinals. The elder
DeCinces hit 237 home runs, with a
high of ~O in 1982, his first season with
the Angels following his trade from
Baltimore.
While in West Vuginia, the elder
DeCinces played golf at The
Greenbrier in White Sulphur Springs
and ran into Sam Snead. "He got
Snead's autograph," Kristi DeCinces
said.
For nm DeCinces, who once was
leading the league in batting (around
.330), he's counting the seconds for the
team's return to Bluefield, where a cozy
room at the Ramada Inn -equipped
with cable television -awaits.
Drafted by Baltimore in the 16th
round last June, DeCinces is not ohly
beginning his career in the same small
town as his father, but he was signed
by the son of the father who originally
signed Doug DeCinces. His path to the
major leagues could also be similar.

Hall of Fame
beckons
McGriff
•Division I-AA college
football's Hall of Fame
will induct Florida A&M
star, who was the original
Mr. Irrelevant for 1980,
but was so disgusted with
low draft, he nixed it.
Florida A&M's Tfrone
McGriff, who became Mr. Irrele-
vant No. 5 wben..be was the last
player picked in the 1980 NFL
draft, will make more Irrelevant
history this weekend when be
will be inducted into the Division
I-AA College Football Hall of
Fame.
The long ago o.ffensive line-
man selected by the Pittsburgh
Steelers is the first of 21 Mr. lrrel-
evants to make any kind of Hall
of Fame.
McGriff enters the new Hall
with an inaugural class of 10,
including such NFL legends as
Walter Payton (Jackson State),
Terry Bradshaw (Louisiana Tech),
Jim Youngblood (Tennessee
Tech) and Buck Buchanan
(Grambling).
"We're so proud of Tyrone we
may have to finally send him his
Lowsman Trophy," said Paul
Salata, Irrelevant Week founder.
Tilis is at least the second time
McGriff has made some sort of
history. He was so upset about
being the last pick in 1980, he
went directly to Canada to play
and became the only one ever to
snub irrelevant Week. Kevin •
Scanlon replaced him.
A year later, McGriff had a
change of heart and showed up
along with 1981 last draftee Phil
Nelson to claim his due. But
Scanlon bad the 1980 trophy, and
Nelson took the 1981 hardware.
The moral to McGriff's sad sto-
ry is so what? And that's the
essence of Irrelevant Week,
which is always the last week in
June in Newport Beach. Mainly,
hats off to our all-time Irrelevant
Hall of Farner -the pnde of his
ilk.

ANSWERS TO WEEKLY BRIDGE QUIZ
Q. 1 • Aa Soulh. w.lnerable, you

What do YO\J bid now?
A • ((you play thttt a Lwo-over-one
reapo118e is a 1ame force, you have
no option bul t.o respond one no
trump. If not, it is a close decision
whether t.o bid two clubs or one no
trump. WiU1 only one prime card, a
doublet.on in partner's auiL and a
balanced hand, we prefer the alight
underbid of one no trump.
Q. 2 • East-West vulner able, as
South you hold;

The bidding has proceeded:
SOtml WEST NORTH EAST

What do you bid now?
A • Another close decision on a
t.ough hand to bid. The choice lies
between one no tromp, a waiti ng
bid of two clubs and two diiimonda.
The experts' choice ia probably two
clubs. For simpler souls, we are not
thrilled with inventing a rebid on a
three-card suit, bul to rebid two
diamond8 with a minimum and a
shabby live-card suiL 1a even w orse.
So we will take our medicine n nd
rebid one no trump despite Lhe sin·
gleton in partner's suit.
Q. 3 • As South, vulnerable, you
hold:

Pllrtner opens the bidding with one

A • Thia hand i11 easier LO bid i f
you don'L play transfer hids, since
you can bid two d1nmonds to show a
weak hand wiLh a five-card or
longer suit. Transfer bidders must
play al lhe Uiree·level or pass one
no trump. Don't even think of
checlting on a major lit Partner Wiii

then? Paa.
Q. 4 • Both vulnerable, aa South
you hold:
.... 83 098742 OAKS ~8
Partner open• the bidding with one
not.rump. Whj\t do you reapood?
A • Here tranefer blda work beau-
tifully -you can t.ranafer to hearts
by bidding two diamonds and lhen
jump to three n"o trump, showing a
balanced hand with five heart.!!. If
thol weapon i1 nol in your araenal,
simply jump to three no Lrump.
Your heart.!! are t.oo weak ror a jump
to three heart.II, which partner will
automatically raise to game on
almost any thr~-card holding.
Q. ts • As South vulnerable, you
hold:
.... 5 ((}'I OK9 4AKQJ7652
Partner opena lhe bidding with one
heart. What. do you respond?
A • Whlle you do nol have much in
the way of high cards, thjs hand is
so strong in trick-laking potential
that we don'L feel you can ever
cat.ch up if you simply respond Lwo
clubs. Our choice is a j ump shil\ LO
three clubs.
' Q. 6 • Both vulnerable, as South
you hold:
•8 6 09 5 OQ 8 1 6 2 •K J 5 4
Partner opens the bidding wilh one
club. What do you rcsp0nd?
A • Your lirsL reaction might be LO
bid one diamond, but your hand is
worth only one bid and you won't be
happy if partner r ebids in a major
or,.-orse, one no trump. Respond
two clubs immedtat.ely and spare
yourself worry ofwhoL twiat.s the
auction could take.
