As you know, the University of Califorrua cannot admit stu- Clents ba~ed upon affirmative action guidehnE.-s, so they have come up with cnteria to find schools who do not traditionally send students to UC schools. The schools usually have studE'nts with low income and the type of student is underrepresented m the UC student PQpulation. Once these middle and high schools are identified, the Early Academic Outreach Program then tnes to provide some of the adf.rantages that other students w~uld normally have access to. For the progrCl.JTl currently in place, our schools were picked because the schools' average SAT 6COre was below the state aver- age. In our district's case. thdt means the Uruversity of California at Irvine will provide a few select- ed students with an SAT prepara- tion course and tutoring. These prep COUfSeS are oommonly taken by those 'students who can afford the steep pnce ldb, but not by stu- dents at the ldrgeted educational- ly dls«d.rantagro schools In addition, the program pro- Vided mfonnation that I W1Sh I would have known years before. The key message was plan ahead, so that by the time your student is a senior and is applying for a UC school, he or she will have taken all of the rtght steps to get admitted. Last year, the average GPA and SAT scores for an enrolled freshman at Irvine were 3.72 and 11~8. At UC Berkeley, the totals were 4.3 and 1460. It's believed EDUCATIOllALLY SPEAKING . gay geiser-sondoval that those numbers will go up as the number of graduating high school seniors increases each year In 1996, there were 260,000 high school graduates in Calilor- rua. While the UC systerr6s min- imum standards for a~on, the advtce from the Outreach Pro- gram is to plan to take the maxi- mum. That reqwres some advance planrung as early as 7th grade. Start Algebra I in 7th or 8th grade, so a student will com- plete calculus before exiting high school Take at least three years of the same foreign language, which m~ans start taking your first year by 8th grade. II you are behind in high school, take foreign lan- guage at community college. To be highly competitive, take three years of lab soence, mcluci;_ mg biology, chemistry, and physics. Take them as Advanced Placement classes, if possible. In addition, UC requires 4 years of English, 2 years of history and government. and 2 years of col- lege prep electives. The new 1bink Col- lege Early Web site at http://www.ed.gov./thinkcollege/e arly is"lilled with helpful informa- tion. The U.CI Education Outreach Program has a middle school component which they hope to unplement in our district by Janu- ary. This is a Saturday Mat,h Academy to get students in 7th grade ready to take algebra in 8th grade. Statistically. students who don't complete algebra in 8th grade don't get accepted to the UC schools. Part of the require- ment of the Saturday Math Acad- emy is that the parents must attend the Parent Academy. which is four sessions providing information about how to get your student ready for college. This program is early intervention at its best. 1 hope it is adopted by both of the schools in our district that qualify. • I talked to a Super Mom last month, who works full time, goes to school at night to get her degree, and has a husband and two kids: Her oldest child just entered kindergarten. She said it was difficult for her and her hus- band to remember what needed to be done every night. Let's face it, especially when Dad is in charge, he needs some real defi- nite instructions. He may be a CEO by day, but he won't think to ask his son if he has a science project due tomorrow. So, I supplied her with the list I handed out in the first day pack- ets when I was PTA President. At the time, l.4sked teachers what was the way that parents could help the most. They said by help- tng the students come to school on time, prepared, and orga'.nized. rt worked for my kids, and now they do the steps themselves. CdM High football coach ~. October 12, 1998 • Sports Editor Roger Corf son • 949...57 44223 • Saturday's 30-0 rout of Anaheim nothing more than a good practice session for Mesa. ME ANAHEIM ANAHEIM -They had already had a couple of bonafide "tests• in the form of losses to Corona del Mar and Western highs. so Saturday night's feast at La Palma Park in the form of hapless and winless Anaheun might easUy be termed "'a "bonus" for ftve hard the line of scrimmage, bounced to the right, then rumbled the remauung clistance. It was the begmning of a 15-point burst which consumed JUSt 1 :5& of playing time. Mesa's defense weeks getting'ready for a Duddrldge run at the Pacific Coast League football champi- onship. forced a fourth~and-23 punt s1tua bon on the enswng Anaheim-series and the center snapped the ball over the would- be punter's bead and out of the end zone for a safety. And although the host Colonists were hardly competition for Coach J erry Howell's 3-2 Mus- tangs, it was plain to vision Mesa as a solid contender {or postseason play in the CTF Playoffs, as well as a legitimate Weir aspuatlons for a league crown. How could one not come to such a conclu- sion after witnessing such a massacre? Among the items: • Anaheim quarterback Johnny Aguilera was sacked NTNE times ... courtesy of Todd Dud- dndge (3), Patrick Hul- liger, Jason Rankin, Jim· Herzog my Herzog, Shaun Fer- ryman, Felix Montano and Robert Hulliger. • Costa Mesa's defense allowed the Colony a net rushing-passing yai:dage of minus 39 yards. Only 59 return yards on punt returns and one interception return kept Anaheim in the black for total yardage (20). . • Of Anaheim's 26 snaps of the ball from scnmmage· (aside from three punts), 19 were for nega- tive, or no yardage. • Incomplete Anaheim passes were m reality moral Vlctones Just 2 of 22 pass plays netted 9 yards, with two passes mtercepted by Ferryman and Ricky Martin, and the aforementioned sacks. It was Anaheim's 16th straight loss and aside from all the defen- sive woes applied by Mesa, the No. 1 weapon in the Mustangs' attack was 5-foot-9 junior Jimmy Herzog, who scored three touch- downs. Herzog bounced, hurdled and shook loose for 99 yards on 23 carries from scrimmage. His scores: a 28-yard bUISt in the first quarter; a 69-yard dash with a purtt return for another; and a 6- yard munch through the. Ana- heun intenor m the fourth period. Martin, who hooked up .with Dave Weir for all three of his completions in nine attempts at quarterback. ran 30 yards with his theft to the Anaheim 38 and five plays later Henog punched into the end zone. The key was a 24-yard connec- tion with Weir to the Anaheim 10 on tlurd-and-snc. Anaheim's next drive quickly went mto reverse, but after get- ting a big break on a roughing the klcker call against Mesa (game tapes will prove other- WISe), Ferryman stepped up on the ensuing play and returned his interception 13 yards to the Ana- heim 20.
