SERVING THE NEWPORT -MESA COMtv\UNmES SINCE 1907 ··Newport Beach ~ay · Bet :Fed Cup tennis ·matches •Some of the world's elite women, including Lindsay Davenport and Monica Seles, could play in semifinals next July. HICllAHI> DUNN ~Pio( NEWPORT BEACH -In what could be the biggest women's tennis event on U.S. soil next year, United Slates Tennis Association officials confirmed Monday that the Palisades Tennis Club in Newport Beach is a potential site for a Fed Cup semilinal match -with the U.S. team featuring No. 1-ranked Lindsay DavenpOrt playing on her home court. . The Fed Cup match. scheduled for July 24-25, could consist of Davenport and Moni~ ca Seles -both VJbrant Fed Cup devotees - playing for 'captain Billie Jean King's U.S. squad against Spam dJld Arantxa Sanchez- Vicano and Conchita Martinez •It could be the ultimate in women's ten- nis," USTA offical Randy Walker said, refer- ring to the strong nvalry between defending Feet Cup champion Spain and the United States, a perennial power. • 1t could be, really, one of the top tennis events in 1999." For Newport Beach -which played host to a Davis 'Cup quarterfinal match between the United States and the Netherlands in April 1997 -to be considered for the Fed Cup semifinal next summer, both teams would have to advance past the first round. The U.S. plays at Croatia on April 17-18. The Fed Cup, 'formerly known as the Fed- eration Cup, is similar to the Ddvis Cup but encompasses two days instead of,three. l\vo singles matches are played the first day, then reverse singles are played the following day with a doubles match to end it. Jeff Ryan, USTA manager for the Davis Cup and Fed Cup, was unavailable for cQm- ment Monday. ·~en I told !Ryan) over the weekend that (Daily Pilot reporters) had called last Fn- day to mquire about the Fed Cup, he said we are looking at Newport Beach for the semifi- nals, so he did confirm that,• said Walker, a communications manager for the USTA. The planning of the Fed Cup on the West Coast in late July would be perfect for the players on the Women's Tenrus Assooation Tour because of the California swing that time of year, Walker said. This sWru:ner, Davenport, a Newport Beach resident who officially reoched No. 1 on the WTA Tour computer rankings Mon- day, became the first woman to sweep the California sununer hardcourt events at Stan- ford (Bank of the West).
