Such are the summers of
Newport Beach police Sgt.
Fred Heinecke during the Festival of the
Arts Pageant of the Masters in Laguna
which uses actors, sets and li ht-
ing tricks to recreate aJDOUS wor o .
Heinecke plays a Confederate soldier
in the living copy of the Vtrginia State
Monument, a bronze Civil War tribute
by an anonymous sculptor featuring
Robert E. Lee on horseback flanked by
troops in fighting poses.
"It's a community service," Heinecke
said. ·All of the people, with a few
exceptions, are volunteers."
The various shades of green are
meant to create the appearance of oxi-

the green appears milituristic, as in
Rambo meets Rodin. Makeup is every-

between lips.

nearly impossible to tell whether the
work is a living fake, especially on the
darkened stage at the Irvine Bowl.
"It's amazingly real," Heinecke said.

The whites of the players' eyes and
unexpected twitches are the only indica-
tors that men rather than metal are the
sculpted matter here.
Heinecke, 47, president of the New-

tion and a 25-year veteran of the force,
respect for tradition, local pride and. of
course, fun.
It also pleases him to know the show
teaches children about the master works
and that much of the proceeds go to art
scholarships.
He inecke's pageant debut about five
years ago was unintentional. He was
backstage with his daughter, Mary, who
was appearing in one of the paintings.
None night I was walking around and
the casting director said 'Come on, we
need you in a piece, we're short a per-
son,'• Heinecke said.

Zzzzz -Wake me when the
November election is over
P arclon me for yawning.
But so help me that's
what most people will
probably be doing this Novem-
ber when they go to the ballot
box to make their decision on
the local political races.
I know it's probably eaily in
the campaign season, but from
the city councils to the school
board, there doesn't seem to be
a juicy issue in sight.
Wanna stop the IRWD from
dumping treated sewage in the
bay? Too late -that's been
done.
Wanna lower school class
sizes to 20 students per one
teacher? Been there, done that.
Wanna stop the Costa Mesa
farm from going to developers?
Sorry, someone beat you to it.
In fact, the only contest
which promises to be some-
what interesting this fall, aside
from Clinton and Dole of
course, is probably the water
board race between outgoing
City Councilwoman Sandra
Genis and longtime Mesa Con-
solidated board member Jack
Hall.
And of course there 1s the
contest between conservative
iconoclast Barry Zanck and
Councilwoman Jan Debay that
promises to ruffle a few feath-
ers.
But otherwise it's looking
pretty ho-hum.
Take the school board races
for example. Before the race

began, there was all this worry
that members of the dreaded
Education Alliance. a conserva-
tive anti-teacher union group,
would vie for spots on the
Newport-Mesa school board.
With three seats open, and
board President Jim de Boom
declining to run again, the
election of two Education
Alliance-backed candidates
would give the Education
Alliance-backed Wendy Leece
a board majority.
So, board incu.mbenls
Martha Fluor and Ed Decker
announced early on in tandem
that they would be candidates
for the board, implying they
were a slate.
Well whether that worked
or not. who knows, but Fluor
and Decker are now running
unopposed -not an Education
Alliance member in s1ght.
So please, somebody, grab
an issue, stir up the masses and
make this election worth
watching.
Either that or the voters are
going to needs lots of coffee to
stay awake.

New Zealand, although my flu
tumed into a really drippy bead
cold, which was very annoying.
The Fooks were wonderful to us
and really welcomed us into
their family and home. Mom
Susan (great namel) is a wonder-
ful cook and thoughtfully pre-
pared all sorts of yummy vege-
tarian meals, over the protests of
her carnivorous sons, Matt and
Tom .
. She and husband-dad
Michael took a whole day out of
their schedules to take Arie and I
driving along the Great Ocean
Road, all the way up to see the 12
Apostles, magnificent towering
rock structures off the coast. By
that time the sun was shining
and we were beginning to really
thaw out. We had a great ti.me
with the four of them, and it was
really nice to spend Shabbat in a
comfortable family environment
and have interesting people to
talk to -besides each other.
0
Michael is an architect, and as
a result, their house (as well as
their "real" home) is spectacular,
with a great view of the ocean
and the forest. We had some
great birds visit us as well -
Crimson Rosellas, as well as King
Parrots (correct me if I'm wrong
on these).
If you check our web site, I
think that there should be a pic-
ture of both the Fooks and the
house -we also ended up stay-
ing with them at their home in
Melbourne after a great dinner at
a vegetarian restaurant! Lovely
weekend -we thought about
rucling out in the back room of
their house and living there!
Final note: Susan actually makes
homemade fruit jams and mar-
malades, etc., and we got to take
a jar of wonderlul apricot jam
with us when we left (my
favorite; needless to say, it's all

· ·The highlight of our brief 24-
hour stay back in Sydney was
dinner at the home. of Susie and
Geoff, with our friend-cum-guide
To'ni, and Peter. They have a
wonderlul home and two ener-
getic and adorable kids and real-
ly provided us with a wonderful warm evening -always prefer-
able to yet another meal in a
re~taurant (although Sydney has
some great ones; Melbourne
even more).
After breakfast with Shirli (the
one who got us mixed up with all
these Sydney characters in the
{irst place), and Toni, we were on
our way to Cairns and warm
weather.
After we arrived in Cairns we
called around from the airport to
book some sort of accommoda-
tions. To make a long story short
-nothing was available any-
where. In desperation. we tried a
place that was advertised at the
airport, and they had space. It
was at someplace outside of
Cairns called Clifton Beach and it
was ... wonderful! Read about it
on our web site.
0
Truly a week of luxwy for us -
really recharged our batteries;
plus we both got rid of our colds.
Snorkeling on the Great Barrier
Reef was fantastic, and the
cruise on the Daintree River was
interesting -it's really an amaz-
ing area, the onJy place in the
world where a rain forest and
reef environment meet up. We
tehted a car one day with Joni
and Glenn, who is an Olympic
biathlete from Canada and has
competed in four Olympic
games. Speaking of which,
how's the U.S. doing? We onl y
hear Aussie results ...
We finally left our little slice of
paradise (don't bother ever going
into Cairns city itself), and are
now in the desert environment of
Alice Springs in the Northern
Territory. (Check this out -there
is a hall-hour time difference
between here and the Eastern
time zone -weird, eh?)
Stay tuned for more ...

The symposium, offered by a

which is more liberal regarding
Jewish laws.
"It's a little bit of a landmark

the seminar's lunch break.
During the seminar, two fam-

another busy day at the temple,
members say.

TRAILER NOTES
If hauling a trailer behind the
family car or truck is in your
vacation plans, here are some
hints that may ensure safe
motoring: Avoid the possibility of
over1oading by understanding that
the maximum Gross Vehicle
Weight Rating (GVWR), which is
comprised of the wei~ht of the
loaded vehicle including cargo
and passengers, should not be
exceeded. Nor should the listed
Gross Combined Weight (GCW) of
the vehicle and trailer be
exceeded. To do so risks
compromising safety and causing
damage to the vehicle. When
loading the trailer, place 60
percent of the cargo weight in the
forward position, balance its side-
to-side distribution, and keep the
cargo low to the floor. Be sure to
inflate the tires in both the tow
vehicle and trailer to the precise
manufacturer for your particular
load. Finally, shorten t he
maintenance intervals for the tow
vehicle.
HINn Automobile engines lose two percent of their power for each 1,000 feet of ele11atlon that they climb In
mountainous altitudes. , , 10 r
HOT l'OPIC
DuringJ,tle Hot summer months,
car owners should keep an eye on
their" dashboard temperature
g'auges. It is not uncommon for
engines to overheat in hot
weather, particularly in stop-and-
go traffic, when hauling a trailer, or
when climbing steep hills.
Overhe"ting can leave motorists
stranded by the side of the road.
or it can lead to engine damage if
not proper1y attended to. In the
event that the termperature-gauge
needle crosses over into the reel
area of the gauge, drivers should
pull off to the side of the road to
allow the engine to cool before
continuing. If a stop is not
possible, an effort can be made to
stabillze heat buildup by turning
the heater to its maximum setting
and setting the fan to high speed.
This will serve to divert some of
the heat from the engine
compartment until it Is safe to
stop. Allow the engine to cool
before adding water to avoid
subjecting the block and cylinder
head to thermal shock.
When It comes to your car, It's
better to be safe than sony; pull
over If your engine Is Overheating
and wait for It to cool down. At

• D.~ite heavy losses to

have the Vaughan sisters
in their quest for No. 1.
By Jim Walters, Daily Pilot
C ORONA DEL MAR -The loss of a
two-time defending league dou-
bles championship pair might be
devastating for most squads.
But don't shed any tears for the Coro-
na del Mar High girls tennis team which
reached the CIF Southern Section
Division I semifinals last season. As the
No. 3 seed they were finally stopped, 10-
8, by No. 2 Santa Barbara.
The Sea Kings, who finished 16-4
overall and were co-champions in the Sea
View League, will be among the top four
teams in Orange County when the pre-
season Division I rankings are released.
That's despite the los9' of Meghann
Wachtler, who was also a standout in sin-
s and Alissa Scott. Both will be start-
ing elf co egia e careers .
"We'll definitely be in the top four (in
CIF) along with Newport Harbor," said
CdM Coach Tun Mang. "Woodbridge
should be in · the top five. All three of
those teams come from the same league
(the Sea View). Peninsula and Dana Hills
are the other two.·
This just-11*.Jht be the year that peren-
nial power Penmsula, which has a win-
ning streak of nt!ar-~20 straight, gets
knocked off, according to Mang.
•They're beatable this time around,"
he said. "They lost their top three players
to graduation.
"Newport is good, too, it's going to be
a real dogfight with Newport Harbor.
We'll be sending three freshmen up
against their three seniors."
That prospect might scare most coach-
es, but Mang's freshman include Nadia
Vaughan, Caylon Leslie and Jenny Mey-
er.
•All these girls are proven,· Mang
said. "It will be a horse race -just a mat-
ter of who is up the days we meet."
Both Leslie and Vaughan have bad
outstanding summers on the junior tennis
circuit.
"Caylon is nationally ranked and she
bad a good Nationals winning five
matches in the back draw," Mang said.
"Normally the pressure might be on the
freshmen, but l think the pressure will
really be on the senio.rs because they
won't want to lose to a freshman.•
,Meyer, who recently moved into the
area, was described by Mang as a good
athlete who will be a strong doubles play-
er for the Sea Kings.

play singles and a couple matches as dou-
bles. It's really a toss up for No. 2 singles
between Nadia and Cayton.•
Who is No. 1? No question, it's Nadia's
older sister Nina Vaughan.
The effervescent junior with a power-
laced game will be defending her Sea
View League singles title. She also
reached the semifinals in the Southern
Section individual championships in sin-
gles on the way to a 32-2 record.
Vaughan got a big boost of confidence
earlier this summer when she took the
16s championship in the USTA Junior
Sectionals at Los Caballeros Sports Vil-
lage. Vaughan, the No. 8 seed, capped
her title match with a 6-2, 4-6, '6..J victory
over Orange's Katey Becker.
•Ntna ls our No. 1,• Mang said. •we
expect big things from her. I'd have to say
things are looking pretty good for Corona
del Mar tennis."
No. 4 singles player Marisol Perea
played doubles all last year as a junior.
She and fellow senior, Ashley Harring-
ton, figure to be the strongest doubles
players on the team this time out.
•Tuey were both first team All-League
together,• Mang said. •1 might put them
together at times, but I'll probably team
them up with other partners."
Others to watch will be senior McKen-

abundance of talent.
By Jim Walters, Daily Pilot
N!WPORT BEACH -
Pletcher Olson doesn't
mince words when it
comes to her Newport Harbor
High girls tennis team.
·we're looking forward to
going to CIF again this year,•
Olson said confidently. "We will
be very strong in the race for the
league title."
Newport Harbor is projected
to join Bay Back Rival Corona del
Mar on the top rungs among the
best teams in the CIF Southern
Section Division I preseason
rankings. Sea View rival Wood-
bridge will be right there. too,
along with powers Peninsula and
Dana Hills.
Olson, like CdM's Tim Mang,
is excited about taking a shot at
ending Peninsula's triple-digit
win streak this year.
"We play them in the presea-
son and were lookmg forward to
it,• Olson. "Maybe we'll be able
to give them a match this sea-
son."
While Peninsula lost it's top
three players, Newport will come
into the campaign with only one
player, Katie Hawkins, lost to
graduation. Everybody else will
be returning from a team that
beat Thousand Oaks, 14-4, in the
first round of the DiVl.Sion 1 Play-
champion Peninsula. The Sailors
(14-7, 6-4) finished third in the
Sea View.
Seniors Katie Canright and
Vanessa Godbey will be back
after a strong junior year where
they blossomed into a force in
doubles. They N!ached the finals
of the Sea View League doubles
championships where they were
beaten by CdM's defending
champions, Meghann Wachtler
and Alissa Scott. They also
reached the quarterfinals of the
CIF Southern Section Champi-
onships.
Both stood out m singles, too,
with Canrigbt raclo.ng up a «-9
record. Godbey was deadly
against Sea View competition,
winning 27 of 30 sets.
"We have five strong singles
players and five outstanding
freshmen,· Olson said. ·we have
great depth throughout the line-
up."
Also coming back are junior
Erica Nelson, a Sea View singles
semifinalist, and doubles partners
Brooke Taylor (a junior) and Emi-
ly Barker (a senior) who joined
Canright and Godbey as First.-
Team All-League selections.
The freshman class will
include several familiar names
like Vanessa Godbey's younger
sister, Chelsei Godbey, and Emily
Barker's younger sister, Sarah
Barker. It also feetures Amanda
Collopy, the younger sister of
Newport's standout golfer Bill
Collopy.
Kritteln Case, the daughter Of
Big Canyon pro Roa Case, and
Audra Adams, who Olson
describes as an outstanding lin·
gles and dOubMI playw, round
out the freshman dui.

A -There is only one way to show
a good hand after your right-hand

the minors, in which partner is
known to be short. you don't want
to play in three no trump. If you
knew partner had five hearts, you
would cheerfully bid game in that
suit. The way to find out is to t.ake a
false preference to three spades.
That gives partner the chance to
