Day by day, a great

to college last week,
and l'm going to miss
him dreadfully. Ten years ago, I
couldn't have imagined myself

The coming together has been
a slow, cautious, deeply felt
process. I'm not sure when that
closure finally took place, but it
doesn't matter because our rela-

going to miss him like bell.
When I married his mother 11
years ago, Erik saw the two most
stable rocks in the oftentimes
bewildering world of his very
early years threatened. Although
his mother and father were
divorced, I threatened his rela-
tionships with both of them. His
mother because her affection
and attention had to be divided
now, and his father because Erik
had a father he loved and there
was no room for an interloper.
And I was threatened because
the prospect of raising a small
child at my stage ol Uf e wu not

the time, energy or desire to take

COSTA MESA -A 45-year-old
Westminster man was seriously
injured Tuesday when his Ford
Explorer was struck by a motorist
who ran the red light at the inter-
section of Newport Boulevard
and Bay Street, police said.
"The red Cherokee didn't stop
for a red light,• said Costa Mesa
police officer Angelo Morgan,
standing in front of the crippled
red vehicle. "She didn't see it."
Gary Hamilton was driving
south in his green Ford Explorer
on Newport Boulevard around
12:30 p.m. when his was struck
by the Jeep Cherokee, driven by
18-year-old Kelly Diemer of New-
port Beach, Morgan said. Diemer
was traveling on Bay Street.
The impact rolled Hamilton's
car, squashing the roof like a tin
can, and sending debris -car
bumpers, papers, plastic bottles, a
Cabbage Patch doll, and chil-
dren's coloring books -all over
the street and sidewalk.
"There's a lot of damage."
Morgan said, surveying the litter
and the dented traffic and tele-
phone poles, which were struck

"Second hand low" is one of the
oldest bromides in the game. It la,
by and large, sound advice, but
there is n time for everything under
the sun.
North and South both held bor·
derline hands. North might have
mode on invitational jump raise in
heorl.ll, but chose a more conserva·
t i ve single raise. Similarly, South
might have po88ed, but was per·
sueded by the finh trump to make a
slightly aggressive game probe of
thr ee diamonds. N orth was happy
CHEVROLET 9045 GEO
Winning lhe club continuation in
dummy with the king, declarer
drew trumps i n two rounds, ending
on the table, I.hen led a spade to the
queen and ace. West perecvered
with clubs, declarer winning. A
spade to the Icing stripped that suit
from both hands, and declarer came
to band wilh the ace of diamonds
and continued the suit.
A lazy defender would have fol·
lowed with the jock of diamonds
and East, on winning the queen.
would have been endplayed end
forced to return a spade, yielding a
slufT-rufT. But West shot up with
the king of diamonds to swallow
partner's queen, and the jack of dia-
monds scored the setting trick.
None of those heroics would have
been necessary had East. jettisoned
the queen of diamonds on the lirat
lead of the suit!
