speed limit is unsafe
In response to the Daily
Pilot's question, "How safe do
you feel school crosswalks are
in the Newport-Mesa area?•
(Oct. 8) -the answer in the
Eastbluff area is quite safe
because of the Bison traffic
safety mitigation and the rerout-
ing of traffic at Corona del Mar
High School.
Eastbluff Elementary School
will be opening soon, and hous-
ing developments beyond Jam-
boree Road will be completed
in the near future. nus will
result in a major increase in
nonresident traffic in the East-
bluff area coupled with many
children walking and bicycling
to the newly opened school.

ty measure (it eliminated a left
turn from J~boree Road into
Eastbluff for eastbound traffic
and diverted cross traffic at the
dangerous Bison Avenue inter-
section), there were many acci-
dents and injuries, also f atali-
ties.
Added to the dangerous
intersection were injuries and
property damage within the res-
idential neighborhood, many
from nonresident cut-through
traffic, which bad exceeded
1,500 cars per day.~
motorists entered Eastbluff from
the major six-lane Jamboree,
often unable to control the
momentum on Eastbluffs nar-
row two-lane steep hills with
00-degree-angle turns, which
had resulted in d. multitude of
traffic hazards on eight streets:
Bison, Bamboo, Alta V1Sta,
Aleppo. Aralia, Bellis, Calllphor,
and Catalpa.
Out-of-control cars had
injured pedestrians, jumped
curbs and caused property
damage, hit parked cars,
trapped residents in their own
garages, and subjected resi-
dents to daily near misses.
Thankfully, the city of Newport
Beach corrected these safety
hazards by implementing the
Bison traffic saiety solution over
the past rune months.
By making the BJSon traffic
sa.fety solution permanent, the
residential streets of Eastbluff
will remain safe for children to
walk and bicycle to the soon-to-
open Eastbluff School cross-
walks on Eastbluff Drive. Before
we can judge the sa.f ety of the
crosswalks, it is imperative that
the children of Eastbluff even
make it to the crosswalks.

The speed limit should be

The police.need to come

Before ·Oj., the hot murder trial focused on Beulah and Bud
· It is a strange fact of life that
at any given moment there is in
tlu.s countcy a court case, usually
a mwder case, that attracts the
attention of the media nation-
wide. Of course. the O.J. Simp-
son case holds all ex.isting
,records.
Well, during the late 1940s,
Newport Beach had its turn in
the sun with the Overell murder
, case. For some reason it caught
the attention of the national
press. Just why 1 do not know
'because the case was rather
drab. I guess there wasn't any-
thing very exciting going on in
the rest of the country. •
Overell, whose hrst name I
have long since forgotten, was a
businessman from Los Angeles.
He and his wife had a daughter, .
Beulah Louise, a rather dumpy.
unattractive 17-year-old girl who
. was madly in love with Bud

An 89-year-old man who was
trying to find the Veterans Affairs
building m Long Beach ran a red
light Monday afternoon. causing
a two-car accident at a busy Cos-
ta Mesa intersection, authonties
said.
Joseph Gilbreth of Pomona
was dnving . westbound in his
maroon Oldsmobile Cutlass in
the 200 block of l 7th Street at
about 1 :30 p.m Police say
Gilbreth didn't stop for a red light
and was hit broadside by Mandy
Abrams, 33, of Costa Mesa, who
was driving a white Plymouth
Accld.i.m. She WdS heading north-
bound on Santa Ana Avenue, and
police estimate both cars were
traveling about 30 mph.
•The light had just turned
when the acodent happened,•
said Robin Regan, who saw the
crash. Ml took a glance at the
intersection and then heard a
boom. It looked like he (Gilbreth)
THE VERDICT
robert
gardner
Gollem, a rather ordinary looking
20-year-old. While it might seem
the two were suited, the parents
of Beulah Louise did not approve
of the match.
The Overells had a boat
described by the press as a
yacht. Actually, it too was rather
drab. It was moored just east of
the Pavilion.
One night when Beulah and
Bud were ashore the boat blew
up, killing both Mr. and Mrs.
Overell. Beulah and Bud were
charged with murder because .
Beulah's parents did not approve
of th(.• reldtionship, because they
JUSt happened to be ashore when
the boat blew up, and most of all
because Bud had bought some
dyndmite m Chatsworth shortly
before-the explosion.
The defendants hired the two
best trial la_wyers in Orange
County, Otto Jacobs for Beulah.
and S.B. •soppy• Kaufman for
Bud.
The then-attorney general
was running for re-election. He
took the case away from the local
distnct attorney. I guess he
thought the publioty would help
him in the elecbon. He hired a:>
spe<:ial prosecutor a former Los
Angeles County deputy district
dtlomcy who had made a name
tor himseU prosecuting a man
named Rdttlesnake Jam05 who
had killf'd hJ5 wife by filling a
box full of rnttlesnakes, then
stick.mg his wile's foot in the box
until enough snakes had struck
her to kill her This new special
prosecutor apparently .forgot the
most important advice given to
any tnal lawyer: ·Keep it simple,
stupid•
He managed to drown the
jury in tnvid, dragging the case
on so long that the Jury became
quite friendly with Beulah and
Bud, to the extent that one day a
Juror had a birthday and the jury
sent out a couple of pieces of
cake to the defendants. It's hard
to conVtct someone with whom
you've shared a birthday Cdke.
Then Cd.me a bombi.holl. The·
stupid defendanU> begun to
exchange :;ome rather lund lovt>
letters in the jail. Of course the
jailers copied the letteri. and
gave them to the prosecuto1. In
these letters they discussed th(>tr
love life in terms that would
charitably be described as hdrd·
core pornography
Being the old pros that they
were, Jacobs and Kaufman just
ignored the letters. l lowever, lhe
pubbc and, by inference, the
Jurors were :.o shocked by the
letters .and the churdcter of these
two defc:>nddnts as reflected in
the letters that 1t was widely
asswned there Wds going to be
convictions.
No Wdy. The Jury came m with
an acquittal I guess the birthday
cake won out over the dirty let·
ters The public was almost as
outraged as was most of the pub-
lie in the Sunpi.on case.

Legal Desecration
of Your Flag
(But she'd rather

The following are but a few examples of the hundred~ of
incidents of fla g desecration that have occurred during
the past four years. The Supreme Court has ruled that
Congress no longer has the power to prevent the
desecration of the U.S . Flag, and Senator Barbara Boxer

• In Ohio, a woman stripped a flag from its staff at a

•In Jessup, PA, the flag that had draped the casket of a
veteran who died at Saipan was . tripped from the f_lag

• Several flags were taken from their staffs, ripped, tied
in knots atld stuffed in toilets in the Nathan Hale
C~metery in Coventry, CT.
Senator Barbara Boxer believe the e incident of --~ malicious conduct hould be protected from punishment as
the rightful exercise of Hfreedom of peech. '' Therefore,
she refuses to upport a constitutional amendpient that
would restore to Congre the freedom to pass law
making such conduc.t illegal. She knows you disagree
with her position. so she would ju t as soon you didn ,t
briqg it up in public.
We, the 22 million members of the Citizen Flag Alliance,
disagree, and we think everyone should know that Sen.
Boxer is oppo ed to protecting our U.S. Flag from
intentional acts of physical desecration. This isn't about
speech; this i about value - and we need to defend them
now more than ever.
Although Sen. Boxer isn't listening to your opinions on
flag desecration, she is li tening to those who thumb their
noses at traditional American value , and he ' iding with

POSSIBLE SOLUTIONS
Once H is clear that there is a
problem, agencies can begin
looking for ways to solve 1t.
Kelly said he is an advocate of
closmg off the Little Corona tid e

the area time to recover.
He admits that could create a
political "firestorm" because it is
such a popular attraction, but said
1t would be worth it if it means
saving the area
"People are not getting the
message that the area is severely
degraded," KeUy said. "Maybe
after a year there will be no
change, but until we do some-
Unng, wp'Jl never find that out.
I'm not going to be the one to sit
back dnd watch it happen."
Another possible solution, Kel-
ly Sdid, would be for the city to
"strengthen the hand" of the
marine conservationists and give
them the power to issue tickets.
"This is reserves and it must be
protected,!' Kelly said.

Sometimes coaching mani-
fests itself in a brilliant play
call, or a well-devised
scheme which puts a team· in
position to succeed.
More often, it shows up in the
subtle nuance of technique - a
step here, a shoulder turn there,
or the game-night recreation of a
drill or concept stressed each
week in routine practice prepara-

Such was the case Fnday
night in the Battle for the Bell,
when Costa Mesa High defen-

Newport Harbor (8-0, 4-0 in the Sea

ter Jennifer Carey and 6-1 junior ffi.iddle
blocker Aprtl Ross, has yet to .drop a
game in league this season.
For the Sea Kings (6-4, 3-1 ), proposed
to move to the Pacific Coast League next
year, it could be the last time they host
Newport Harbor in a league match . First
serve is slated for 6:30 p.m.
"We expect a typically tough Back
Bay nvalry (tonight), where just about
d.Ilything can happen,~ said Conti,
whose squad is led by junior outside hit-

Marissa Becker.
The Sailors, ranked t'fo. 2 in the
nation by some publications in the
preseason, have lost only one game in
best-of-five matches this year (against
Arroyo Grande).
While Glenn said this year's team is
among the best he's coached at Newport
Harbor, he'll take nothing for granted
tonight in what is traditionally an
breeze of some 20 knots in .the morning, a
westerly breeze in the early afternoon nulli-
