The arrest stems from allega-

times at the school. Harrington is
accused of molesting one of the

literacy:
It's all in
the family
Tie relevance of family to education is
ot a new concept. As early as the 18th
century, child-rearing pamphlets
stressed the importance of family to children's
intellectual development.
Today, many educators emphasize parents'
importance as their children's first teachers
and most important
educationa:Hnfluence.
How can you make
a difference? Research
has shown children
who are read to fre-
quently, who have
access to reading and
writing materials and
whose questions about
print are answered
will become more lit-
erate adults than those
not exposed to activi-
ties involving language.
Guidance for sharing books with children is
available in •Tue RJF Guide to Encouraging
Young Readers," "Books Kids Will Sit Still

COSTA MESA -A suggestion
from city parks commissioners to
the City Council could save the
beloved moon sculpture at Sub-
urbia Park.
The Parks, Recreation, Facili-
ties and Parkways Commission
recommended Wednesday the
council install seats around the
giant lunar model to deter young-
sters from crawling on it.
The half-orb currently is pro-
tected by a bar.
Many parents have called for
removal of the cratered ball at
Nevada Avenue and California
Street because they fear the
potential for accidents. Others
complain it blocks their view
while their children play.

name of nostalgia and honor of
the 1969 Apollo moon landing.
After all, many grownups played
on the moon sculpture as chil-
dren.
Sealing should help with some
of the safety concerns, officials
said. Specifics of the plan are still
being drafted for the council.
The chairs will be H right at the
base to make it more difficult to
climb on the surface," said Keith
Vonholt, director of community
services."
Another recommendation on a
shuttle to the council is a move to
change Suburbia Park's name to
Moon Park in honor of the sculp-
ture.
Both issues will likely go
before the council at the Sept. 16
meeting, Vonholt said.

"yadda." Everybody sounds
the same. I can 't distinguish
one voice from another.
My vision ... wo, that's
really weird. Political ads on

It's a virus, all right. A
tenacious litue bug carried on
the American airwaves dur-

jumps right into the blood-
stream and messes up the
balance of nature. Hot air and
cold sweat are its breeding
grounds.
m not the only one infect-

hit harder than I am. They all
look flushed and babble
rhe toric in feverish pitches.
Four years ago when this
happened I wound up vot-

election, but I was afraid it
might reflect a political pref-

I am certain of one thing.
By November, it is doubtful
that I will be in any condition
to call myself a Democrat, or
to call myself a Republican,
or, for that matter, to call
myself a Libertarian.
It is far more likely that by
election day this year. you'll
find me calling myself a doctor.

The Greyhound Pets of America
(GPA) Is a national adoption agency
for greyhounds, with 34 chapters
throughout the United States. Its
mission is to: find kind, loving
homes for gteyhounds after they've
retired from the track or arrive from
the farm, and educate the public
about what good pets greyhounds
make.
"We get most of our dogs from
tracks in Caliente, Mexico as well as
Phoenix, Apache Junction, Tucson
and Utah," said Joyce McRorie;
president of the GPA Orange County
and Greater Los Angeles Chapter
(GPA/CA-OC & GLA), a non-profit,
all-volunteer organization. Since the
local chapter formed in October
1995, It has placed 115

Most greyhounds are retired by

THE NATIONAL CAT PROTECTION SOCIETY
By Lana H. Johnson
In 1968, C. Richard Galore, a
former humane officer, founded the
National Cat Protection Society
(NCPS) in Long Beach to provide a
safe haven for cats without homes.
His purpose was threefold:
• provide a shelter dedicated to
unwanted cats and kittens and find
responsible homes
• malntaln a retirement center for
older cats whose owners can no
longer care for them
• teach humane education to youth
stressing kindness to animals,
particularly cats, and the
importance of spaying and
neutering.
In 1994, the Long Beach facility
was relocated to Newport Beach,
the site of a previous animal
hospital, allowing zoning for the
same type of business that
handled animals. This newly
renovated state-of-the-art facility
has plans to offer low-cost spay
and neuter clinics.
As mandated by law, the NCPS
only takes in owner-relinquished
cats and kittens (not strays). All
adult cats are altered before
adoption. Kittens are accompanied
by a spay/neuter contract (at six
months of age they are ready to be
altered).
There is a veterinary technician
on staff who ba~es. tests'. gi~es
the on-site clinic. A veterinarian
visits the facility regularly.
"Because we are a private non-
profit organization, we set our own
standards and decide who is a
prospective adoptee," said Ellen
Diamond. assistant manager of
NCPS and editor of its newsletter,

Although the animals don't like to

The cats have also become the
basis for Edmondson's home decor.
Decorated in a contemporary theme,
the home Is acoented with animal

Leopatd print pillows grace the sofa
