JUST BEING NE·IG·HBOR-l¥. . . . . Labor Day block party turns strangers into neig~bors By John Canalis, Daily Pilot COSTA MESA -A strange thing happened on flower Street Monday -·neighbors actually talked to each other. In an era where most folks don't know those who share their streets, sidewalks ~nd grocery stores, flower residents threw a Labor Day block party, a concept so old-fashioned it seemed new. They introduced their spouses,· kids and pets. They barbecued, played horseshoes, shared porch- es and rode bikes in a Rock- wellian scene that contrasts with the modem-day bustle of New- . port Boulevard only blocks away. "It's a great idea," said resi- dent Trace_y Harrison. "Peo_ple who don't know each other are together." ~ Resident Steve Sloan came up with the idea about a month ago. By Jim Watters, Datly Pilot C ORONA DEL MAR -The best part of covering a major sporting event may well be the · first-hand o rtuni it affords to peek behind the curtain at e backstage happenings. In being able to enter the world the normal fan rarely has access to and seeing th.e athletes outside the boundaries of the competition. While the Daily Pilot sports staff was feverishly trying to track down daily results from our local athletes competing in the Summer Olympic Games, longtime Corona del Mar resident Doug Sparks was our man behind the scenes. Anyone reading the sports pages during the 17-day extravaga.DZ4 in Atlanta couldn't help but notice Spark's • smiling visage who graced us nearly each day with those intimate .beltind-th0-scenes details we 'all love so well. From his vantage point as a volunteer technician at the Games, Sparks let us climb on the fabled MARTA busses that were running·on the Julian Calendar inStead of Eastern Standard Tune. We were able to meet with the athletes as they strolled casually 'through the Olympic Village, sip a Coke under ' the likes of American swimming phenom Amanda Beard. He took us into those early-morning hours following the senseless life-ta.king bombing at Centennial Olympic Park, allowing us to hear the helicopters that prompted his wife, Kay, to wake him from a sound sleep at 1 :30 a .m. to ponder thier meaning.' The column that captured the pure joy that is the o .lympics, may well have Olympic Stadium the day bef9re the track and field events were scheduled to start before 80,000-plus ~ators. His on-field passes allowed us to join the 43-year-old Sparks as he walked around the track, sat in the President's . Box and raised his arms up in victory as he ran across the tinis1l line in a gold-medal winning performance from his mind's eye. While the race may have only been an illusion. the spirit of the Games was borne out in the child-like joy Sparks is still carrying with him. · •1t was an incredible feeling to be on the track all aloJl& like that," Sparks said. •1 told myself I was going to do all of the things I could think of that people would want to try if they had the chance. • A'total rush came over me when I crossed the finish line., The tough part was trying to look semi-professional while I was doing it •t didn't want to attract attention to myself. The bad news is that may still only be good en~>Ugh for third place in a stacked ~Iden State~- Westmont and Azusa Pacilic, who figure to be the top two teams again this season, both finished 1995 in tb...e top five nationally . However things shake out, it's a cinch sec will improve on last season's fourth-place fin. ish ln the GSAC which was the best finisb in school history. "This is the women's year to shine,• said Coach Bryan Wtlkens. MThe men went to Nationals two years ago. Now it's U:ie women's tum.• Five of the conference teams will be on hand for Sept. 14's season-opening Whittier Invitational, including Westmont and Azusa Pacific. "That first meet will be a good indicator of where we stand,• Wilkens said. "We're setting our sights on Azusa to see if we can. close the gap on them.• Wllkens pointed to two new names on his roster - freshman Maribel Delgado and graduate student. Nikee Chambers -as his projected two top contrib- lrtors. Actually, Chambers isn't really a new addition, despite the .name cbang~. She is the former Nikee Pool, who was married following last school year. Pool, who was named SCC's Female Athlete of the Year, has a good chance of shaking things up at Nationals. She finished 42nd last season, just 12 spots fr6m All-American honors. •Actually, she_ was sick at Nationals,· Wilkens said. "For her to run as well as she did. as ill as she was, was amazing. •A top-10 finish .is a real possibility if she stays healthy-and runs-a good race.• . It's no accident Pool is back despite graduating last year. She had battled several injuries in her early career and she and Wilkens finally agreed she would redshirt the 1994 season. MSbe really wanted to try and race anyway,• Wilkens said. "But I told her I'd rathe, have her healthy in the_lalLof '96, instead of struggling in the fall of '94.'" -- "It was the right decision and we're both excited she is back." Delgado really is new face on campus coming from Santa Ana Valley. At one point last season she was the top 800-meter runner in Orange County. She's a 2:15 half-miler and has a 17:53 to her credit in a three-mile cross country run. "That girl is really tough,· Wilkens said. •She may even push Nikee a little bit. She would be the first in a few years to push Nikee. We have a strong one-two punch." Nos. 3 and 4 will fall to Erin Culver, a senior, and junior Angie LaMance, who figure to flip-Oop between the two spots all ~n long. The fifth spot is even tougher, accoriling to Wilkens, with four or five runners in the hunt. e ve wo minutes in 5Ks, • Wllkens said. "1bat's the most Chambers, Caren Anderson (a junior), Culver and senior Darlene Pruitt all were under 20 minutes last season. 11\ree other returners, sophomores Teriaann Bog- an and · u.nior J · er Booth were near~ Danielle Hadfield will be another freshman to watch.
