For me, Sunday is the day.
Thlth be told, I think all this

abov.t getting old is overdone:
I'm not ecstatic over it, but I'm
not stressed out either. There are
at least a hundred t:liches and
pithy sayings that come to mind~

But as with most old saws, th~re i.s a mPasure of truth in

Having to double-pump to get
up from the couch is a drag. lf
you're at a party with a drink in
one hand and a plate in the oth-
er, forget it. You're going ,
nowhere. You have to wait until
no one's around and then do Ulis
violent, contorted dance until you
can get one hand behlnd you
and push -hard.
When I get out of bed m the
morning, r hold my arms out
from my s1des and walk in Uus
strange, stiff-kneed waddle until
I loosen up. It's like Sasquatch
with a really bad sunburn. If 1
dnve for more than two hours

two minutes to regdin my full
height. I shuine dround the car
like Quasimodo, reachmg up to

But let's get scnous. We need
some reliable ms19hts, some real
answers What do the sages and
wnters and phtlo'iophers of the
world, pdst and present, have to
say about this business of gettlng-
old?
Here are a few. Some of lhe
adthors are fdJTUIJctr, some not,
Let's start with the Scott Brosius
of wnters, William Shakespeare.
"Golden lads and girls all must,
as chimney sweepers, come to
dust.• •
From Victor Hugo: •forty is
the old age of youth. Fifty is the
youth of old age.•
OK. I can live With that.
From Juan Montalvo: •01d
age is an island surrounded by
death."
Great, thanks Juan. Now I feel
•better.
From William Feather: •A
man of 50 looks as old as Santa
Claus to a girl of 20. •
Just what I need, Bill. Have
you met Juari Montalvo? I think
you two would really hit it off.
You could hang out and depress
each other.
From William Cowper; "He
that has seen both sides of 50 has
lived to little purpose. if he has no
other views of the world than he
had when he was much
younger."
I'm clean there, William. I
have a much different view of
We now than I did then. I used to
thmk everything was a joke. Is
your name really Cowper by the
Wdy?
From John Donne: "No
Spring, nor Summer beauty hath
such grace, As I have seen in one
Autwnnal face "
I like that, John. It dlmost
makes me forgive you for the
length of •Paradise Lost.• ·
From Bill Vaug~: ·one trou-
ble with groWUlg oiier is that it
gets progressively tougher to fmd
a famous figure who didrl't
amount to much when be was
your age,"
I like that one a lot
Finally, a line from Bernard
Baruch jumped out at me: "Old
age is always 15 years older than
I am."
Thal is, almost verbatim, the
conclusion some friends and I
reached in a di.scussion about
turning 50 1ust a few days ago lt
really lS true. A 15-year-old
thinks 30 is over the hill. A 30-
year-old thinks 45 is nuddle age.
A 45~year-old thinks 60 is retire-
ment age. A 60-year-old thinks
75 is elderly And a 75-year-old
thinks 90 lS 1ust plain old.
Perhaps the truest line is one
of the.most worn. It's all a ques-
tion of mind over matter. II you
don't nund, 1t doesn't matter.
,I·gotta go.

5 Llthuania honors Cox for his ·support
R'ep. Christopher Cox (R-
NewpMt Beclch) rece1ved the
Baltic nation's highest award for
n livil)g foreign leade r from
Lithuanian President Vdldas
•\damkus on Thursdaf.
In 1991, as Lithuania revolted
dgainst Moscow, Cox traveled to
Russia to dellver a speech -in
the Russian language he learned
1n college advocating
L1thua01an freedom.
Prev1ousl}, despite being
barred from Soviet-controlled
Lithuania by a vote of the
Supreme Soviet in Moscow in
1990, Cox traveled to Vilnius,
Lithuania, to help focus interna-
tional press attention on violent
Soviet crackdowns there.
He also pushed for press
freedom in Lithuania, was an
early supporter of U.S. recogni-
tion of the new Lithuanian gov-
ernment, and encouraged
human rights advocates in
Moscow to oppose their govern-
ment's oppression of tlj inde-
pendent Baltic state.
Most recently. Cox called on
Russia to formally repudiate the
HiUer-Stalln pact, which robbed
the Baltics of their indepen-
dence.
According to Cox's Washing-
ton, D.C., office, the award is the
highest honor that can be given
by the Republic of Lithuania to a
living noncitizen.
