" -TONY MELUCQ, 19 + Jewish mausoleum planned for cemetery By Iris Yokoi, Daily, Ptlot COSTA MESA -Harbor Lawn Cemetery this week launched the first phase of a mulumillion-dollar expansion project that includes the construction of a new Jewish mausoleum building. The new 2,000-square-foot mausol~um will be located in the northwest end of the cemetery at 1625 Gisler Ave., in the ceme- tery's Mo_unt Olive section desig- nated for those of the Jewish faith. . The building will be approxi- mately 20 feet high and is pla, nned to accommodate 216 casket spaces. There· will be an additional 144 niche spaces locat- ed on the backside of a fountain in the complex. The new building, which is expected to take a couple of months to complete, is just the first of some six structures the cemetery plans to add in its Jew- ish section to serve the communi- ty, said Joanne Anderson, sales manager, "We want to cater to all of Orange Coullty," Anderson said. In addition to constructing the Star of David mausolewn com- plex in coming years, the ceme- tery hopes to eventually r~novate its Oriental Garden area; build some private mausoleum struc- tures and family estat_e gardens; and construct a stately, two-story chapel mausoleum build.mg, Anderson said. The cemetery has already tak-. -en-3& reservations for that chapel building, Anderson said. A key. goal of the expansion project is to provide •diversity" for the different cultures in the community, Anderson said. While the c~metery is non-sec- tarian, officials have learned peop e en o wan o with other people of their same belief or same culture," Anderson said. So the cemetery .also pro- vides a Catholic Gardens area. The 32-acre Harbor Lawn still has two acres undeveloped, Anderson said. And me? Can't even get my old newsroom chum Anne Spinn off my message. One evening I explained the whole stupid thing to City Editor Iris Yokoi, who is always very tol- erant with me and has known me long enough to understand that I'm easily defeated by bigb- tech stuff. "Maybe I'll just leave it alone, ldndo as a tribute to Anbe or something,• I told Iris. The undercurrent of the new text is one of latclUcey kids, bro- ken families, self-importance, and multl-culturalism. The veiled attempt to normalize the breakup of nuclear families does little to support what should be the ulti- mate goal of a society composed of families with moms and dads, parents placing the welfare of - their children above all else by making the commitment of time, and a society with the goals of ensuring freedom and opportuni- ty for all, We rapidly (progress?) to defi-~ .today's education is the seeming nitions. As the hlJman body has not changed much in the past 36 years, it's appropriate that the bulk of a health text book be devoted to such. Pin.ally, the last chapter of the old textbook is tilled "You and Other People." 1b1s section covers being a good dtizen, helping others, being fair, courteous, getting along at home, taking responsi· l>Uity, setting a good example, and be1ng truthful and cheerful. 1bere'1 no word on •TaJdng ues promoting hard-work and achievement does little more than foster selfish self-interest and exacerbate the natural differ- ences between people. Home financing made •• easier . Public Employees Reti rement System (PERS) financing now available One of the most exciting ways to -buy a home. is now available. If you are a member of the Public ~ _ Employees Retirement System (PERS), the Legislative Retirement System (LRS) or the Judicial Retirement System (JRS), you are through the PERS Member Home Loan Program. PERS members receive a low competitive fixed or adjustable rate with free interest rate lock protection . This allows you to "float down" your interest rate at three separate times during escrow if rates fa ll. The big news for PERS members is the ability to borrow all the required five percent down payment from their PERS account. A 95 percent fix~ rate first trust deed is made concurrent with lhe Personal Retirement Account Secured Loan (PRASL) for the down payment. This makes the transaction I 00 percent financed with both loans at low fixed or adjustable rates. PERS members can even combine their PERS oan with the advantages of Fannie Mac's Community Home Buyer program. This allows the borrower's income-to-debt ratios to be higher than normal. In addition, the seller can y u to three rccnt of the borrower's closing costs. This could save thousands of dollars and bring down the out-of-pocket cash investment to as low· as one to two percent of the purchase price.
