Cities may

By Jennifer Armstrong, Daily Pilot
Costa Mesa ~and Newport
Beach may once again pool their
police helicopter resources if both
cities' councils give the OK to a
new joint operation plan.
Council members met in Costa
Mesa Monday to discuss revamp-
ing the AirBome Law Enforce-
ment Program. They hope to con-
tinue the program without the
help of ..Huntington Beach and
Orange County, who dropped out
last month.
Costa Mesa Mayor Joe Erick-
son said the sharing aspect of the
program could lead to other siini-
lar ventures between the cities. ·u this works out, both finan-
cially and operationally, we can
look at other things to do jointly
in the future,· be said.
The Newport Beach council
voted at its regular Monday
meeting to buy into the plan. The
Costa Mesa council will decide at
its meeting next Monday
whether or not to sign the agree-
ment.
Police officials from both cities
presented their plans for a
scaled-d own version of the 3-
year-old program, which is based
at John Wayne Airport. Plans
include selling one of each city's
two helicopters and pooliiig the
profits to buy one newer model
and reducing combined staff
from 10-to 7.
Helicopter pilots under the
four-way helicopter program
could take up to 15 minutes to
respond to emergencies, New-
port Beach police Capt. Paul
Henisey said. The reduced flying
area should mean a response
time of abOut five minutes, he
said.
•This program would result in
more time over our cities with
people who know our cities,•
Henisey said. ·we could also
have a proactive patrol looking
for possible law-violators. •The
cities' police departments now
spend a total of $2.5 million to run
their helicopter units, according
to the proposal.

Fratiello has also gone to the

Municipal admintstrators

Mesa Verde signed a 17 ·

said Ann Gyben, assistant to
the city manager.
•If residences have claims

Gyben said she only hears

who had smoked marijuana, 65%

The strange expetjences of

S trange things happened to
Sam Ozarart. He wu a
lousy skin diver. We called
him ·u-dive Sam" because at
the same time his feet were
going underwater, bis head was
coming up. Nevertheless, he wu
an essential pert of our pioneer
skindiving community. He wu
our source of spears.
The equipment of those early
diving years -mid-to late '30s -
was, to put it mildly, primitive.
When I see a modem scuba diver
waddling into the water carrying
a couple of thousand dollars'
worth of gear, J marvel at the
rudimentary equipment we had.

wood was scarce, so we sent
Sam for some additional wood.
At the base of the cliff were
two caves, really just indenta-
tions in the rocks. We were in
one. The Japanese farmers, who
had been fishing off the rocks,
were tn the other.
I was sitting in our cave trying
to keep from freezing over our
piddling little fire when all of a
sudden a vegetable crate came
crashing down from the top of
the cliff. I ran out and looked up.
There was Sam standing beside
a big pile of vegetable crates and
• Pupils from other cities

proposed policy.
By Julie Ross Cannon, Daily Pilot
NEWPORT-MESA -Stu-
dents from Huntington Beach
or hvine may start skipping dty
boundaries and entering New-
port-Mesa classrooms if school
trustees approve a new Inter-
district attendance policy
tonight.
The new policy, which
allows students who live in oth-
er cities to attend Newport-
Mesa schools, is necessary
because of the district's recent
funding change.
FoI the past eight years,
Newport-Mesa has been one of
only a handful of school dis-
tricts in the state to receive
-mosr of its tundlng ttom loca.1
property taxes. Since the dis-
trict received no additional
money for students from other
areas, state law allowed New-
port-Mesa to reject intermstrict
transfers on the basis they
would be a financial burden.
But this year the district will
be funded by the state based on
how many students attend.
Newport-Mes·a officials can
only deny transfers if a school
has no capacity or if the transfer
would alter the school's ethnic
balance.
The new policy could help
the district rake in more money
for tr an.sf en to local high
schools, which have plenty" ot
space available.
Other items on tonight's
agenda:
• Green Acres Reclaimed
Water Project: sCbool offidals
want to use reclaimed water for
garden.Uig at Corona del Mar ,
High School.
• .Enrollment Projections
Contract: The district may hire
Davis Demographic & Planning
to 'provide a master enrollment
projection plan at a cost of
$34,575.
The school board meets at 7 -

Center, 425 E. 18th St., in Costa

Metamorphosis
• At Orange Coast, that term applies most aptly to
fullback Mike Freeman, who loves the transition.
By Jim Walters, Daily Pilot
M ik.e Freeman has found a home in the Orange Coast
College backfield. Yes, the former tight endJrom
Newport Harbor High will be the Pirates' starting
fullback this season, completing the metamorphosis that
started five games into his freshman campaign.
"Fullback is my natural position," Freeman said durijig a recent
practice. "I knew it from the first day. I was built to be a fullback."
The 6-2, 240-pounder actually wanted to make the change as a
senior with the Sailors. but injuries forced him back on' the front lines.
"I practiced as a fullback. going through all the drills, l~g the
plays,· Freeman said. ·And then our starting tight end was injured
and I was nght back there again.
"Th.is all happened three days before the season was supposed to
start. It was frustrating because in high school you get to play the
position you want. 1 replly thought l was a natural
fullback then and l was looking forward to trying
il.
Of course, if a Genie had granted him bis wish,
Freeman wouJd have missed out on the biggest
play of his football life.
Freeman, who was a two-time All-Sea View
League selection at tight end, hooked up with John
Giordani for a 38-yard scoring pass with 2:44 left to
lift Newport Harbor to a dramatic, come-from-
behind, 20-15, victory over Servile for the 1994 CfF
Division V State championship.

position Freeman wouJd have liked to'play), but Giordani called an
audible. Girodani la pped his helmet in "go sign• to Freeman, who
was lined up left on the outside.
Freeman went on a fly pattern and caught the pass at the 12,
pulled out of the grasp of a tackler, and went in for the score to erase
a 15-14 deficit and complete the Tars' "season of destiny.•
"It was a dream season,· Freeman said still feeling the glow of
those not-so-distant days. "The guys on the team were sa close. It's
something you know you'll never have again.

Freeman, who was used primarily as a blocking back last season,
averaged 5.4 yards a carry on 12 attempts. He also caught seven
passes for a 10.4 average. _
He and fellow sophomores, William League and Chet Walker, will
see most of the duty this season in a potentially explosive backfield.

FOLLOWING THE BUCS
Cricket anyone?
• Former cricket player
Israel Heanyi in the
National Football League.
By Jim Walters, Daily Pilot
F ootball players are
supposed to have names
like Bronco or Ironhead,
having gravitated to the gridiron
when their motorcycle gangs
became too tame to satisfy their
primal urges for mayhem.
They aren't supposed to be
wicket-wielding former cricket
players named Izzy.
It kind of goes against the
sensibilities somehow.
But, hoot, there it is right on
the roster, in black and white, on
of all teams the San Francisco
49ers.
·1zzy• Ifeanyi at defe.nsive
end.
Heanyi, whose given name is
Israel, played on Coach Bill
Workman's teams in 1992 and
1993 that were a combined 15-7.
He's arguably the best player
ever to have come out of the
OCC football program.
This is the same Lagos,
Nigeria. native who blocked the
hall light when he first stood in
the doorway of defensiye
coordinator Mike Taylor's office
asking to talk to a football C04ch
those many years ago.
Taylor, recognizing he might
have something here, invited
Izzy to come in and sit down.
After putting together two
standout seasons at OCC, Izzy

lightly. Pteviom owners have
included San Diego Chargers'
perennial All-Pro Bowler Junior
Seau and the New England

his two seasons with the nojans,
throwing in some All-Pac-10
honors here and Senior Bowl
appearances there, to earn a call
from the 49ers as their No. 1
draft choice.
He struggled through the
49ers training camp with some
hamstring twinges, but you can
bet the 6-foot-5, 250-pound
defensive end will see plenty of
action this season-either as a
pass rushing spedalist or on the ·.
special teams.
Not bad for a guy who
learned a lot about football by
playing Sega and Nintendo
football games whicll use Xs and
Os just like the real coaches do.
Almost going unnoticed, was
the pro signing of Gene Adair,
who was the most prolific kicker
in OCC history, playing on the
same teams at Izzy.
A<lair was signed as a free
agent by the Detroit Llons, cut
during training camp, and then
re-signed to play on the taxi
squad.
Adair holds the OCC career
and single-season field goal
records with 20 and 12,
respectively. He finished his
collegiate career in C-ODDecticut .
at the
University of
New Haven
where he
again set
career (20) and
single-season
(11) field goal
standards. He
also set the
single-season
school record
for punting Ueanyt
yardage with
2,718 yards on 69 punts (a 39.4
average).
Both of Orange Coast's •pro
connections• have Workman to
thank for their chances. He's a
tireless performer when it comes
their careers.
Last year's team went an
-ueinspiring-4-6, yet 22 members
from that team are currently
playing with four-year colleges.

to pass for more than 3,000 career yards. He fin-
ished with 3,037 -second all-time to Alvin White's
3,425 (1971 -72). .
Despite the numbers, Sauk's mobility was
slowed by injuries to both ankles. And at times it
seemed like he must have forgotten the play he
called in the huddle as passes found landing sites
that "the Plash" couldn't have run under.
Still, the Pirat~s ~oved the ball reasonably well
' Cqnference' selection, rushing for 931. yards and
seven touchdowns. It was the first time sirice 1991
that the Pirates didn't have a 1,000-yard rusher.
League surely would have topped the standard
except for a late-season ankle injury.
He provided OCC with its highlight of the year
when he rushed for 225 yards (fifth best in school
history) on 26 carries and scored three touchdowns
in a 27-23 win at Fullerton. The Pirates were 4-4,
3-1 in conference, following the win and talking of
an outside chance at a playoff berth. Easily that
game was the high point of the season.
League was injured early the following week in
a 41-10 loss to Saddle back and his ankle allowed
him to see only limited duty (22 yards on six car-
ries) in the finale at Riverside as he and the Pirates

both limped home with two losses .
Matt Meehan, back for his sophomore season.
again proved himself to be the Pirates' top ~_.
former on the offensive line while earning fint-
team All-Conference honors. Meehan anchored
the line as a pulling tackle, helping OCC ama.s.s
2,009 yards on the ground.
Costa Mesa High grad Brian Smith was a sec-
ond-team choice at the other tackle.
Wide receiver Jamal Hills also was a second-
team pic}t with 27 catches for a 12.4 average.
On defense, fonner Newport Harbor High prod-
uct Steve Gonzales capped an outstanding career
with the Pirates, finishing With 193 career '4cltl0$
(eighth best all-time). He ea.med first-team An-
Conference honors while leading OCC ,with 103
tackles. The 6-2. 215-po\llld linebacker came up
with his first collegiate interception, a 39-yarder
for a TD, in a 41-23 win over Southwestern.
Gonzales, who is starting for the University of
Hawaii this season, was named the team's MVP
and earned his second straight "Hitter of the Year*
award. He and Mike Musso (1977-78) are the only
two-time award winners.
' freshman, used his outstanding speed to lead the
team with seven quarterback sacks from his
defensive end position. Mollner, a second-team
All-Conference selection, also had 54 lackles (fifth
best on the team).
Chuck Harcar, who was expected to see time on
offense after moving over from comerback in fall
practice, ended up back. on the defensive'side of
the ball, earning second-team honors.
The ldcking game also sparkled. Place kicker
Nate Bennett, second-team All-Conference, put
himseU on par with some of the best kickers in
school history by bitting on a perlect 8 for 8 in field
goals. Punter Gregg Kaiser. from Newport Harbor
High, had a 38-1-yard average as he, too, earned a
second-team nod.
