Newport-Mesa schools are~bac_k in sesfilon, bt1t la-rge-
first-and second-grade class sizes are absent

By Julie Ross Cannon, Daily Pilot
Dwarfed by the size of bis
classroom. first-grader
Christopher Goodner gazed
up at his new teacher.
"lbis is the littlest class I've ever
been in,• he told her before sitting
on the carpet to hear a story.
The 11-student class at College
·Park Elementary is also the smallest
Canie Taylor has taught.
A sixth-grade teacher at Whittier
Elementary last year, Taylor wanted
to teach a first-or second-grade
class this year because of tbe lower
class sizes onlered by school board 1-t-tt--t---iinenmemm mon . r n
ed bilingual teachers for those two
grade levels.
•tt's so wonderful," Tuylor said as
she looked around her class, neatly
organized into four groups of tables.
Across the walkway in Room 8,
teacher Jeanette Dreyer was also
enjoying a small class of students.
Last year, Dreyer supervised 33
squinning, 6-year--old bodies. Tues-
day, oDly 15 students vied for her
attention.
•ob, pinch me," Dreyer said
after counting her students. ·Pinch
me." •
But while Newport-Mesa Uni--
fied's frantic road to class size reduc-
tion bas been relatively smooth,
some schools like College Park have
encountered a few bumps.
Because of a statewide aunch for
portable classrooms, the two
ordered for College Park haven't
arrived. Since tlie school has no
extra classroom space available,
Dreyer's class has taken over the
school's library and a fourth-grade
class has set up shop in the school's
computer lab.
Principal Kathy Sanchez said the
inconvenience will last about two ·
months.
"It's neat and the children don't
know the difference,• she said.
Dreyer huddled the library tables
on one side of the library, reserving
the other near an impromptu bul-
letin board for floor seating and
activities. Ftfteen multicolored crates
bold her teaching materials along
one wall of books.
won't keep other College Park stu-
dents from the books, though. The
school librarian plans to visit indi-
vidual classrooms weekly with a
cart of books.
•Everything's just falling into
place,• Sanchez said, S'UIVeying the
campus. •Jt's going to be a great
year.·

• The city will hire extra firefighters to
staff service that had been handled by

NEWPORT BEACH --. The Fire and Marine
Department has permanently gone irito the full.
service ambulance business after trying the job for
about a month.
The City Council voted Monday to give the
department responsibility for responding to all
injury calls m the oty
The department temporanly took over service
in August from a pnvate CQmpany, MedTrans.
Until then, the city's own paramedics treated
patients, worlong separately from MedTrans
wo~kers, who only rushed patients to the hospital.
Under the new system, the Fire.and Marine
Department will bill insurance companies for the
service. Under the old system, MedTrans collect-
ed those profits.
"It seemed like it was the right thing to do."
Councilwoman Jan Debay said of Monday's coun-
cil decision. "We'll be watching it carefully to
make sure it's going OK •
The Fire and Marine Department will use one
current staff member and hire three more fire-
fighters at a cost of $232,984 to run the two ambu-
lances.
The council voted unanimously to go with the
recommendation of its public safety committee.
The committee also considered contracting for
service from the city of Huntington Beach or
stattmg aty ambulances with privat~-company
workers

City won't buy
school land
The city or Newport Beach won't bid on land up
for sale by the Newport-Mesa Unified Schoo!_ Dis-
trict afterall.
The City Council voted Monday not to buy the 1-
acre site where the distnct's administrative offices
now sit. The district is leaving the offices at 1601 E.
16th St. m Newport Beach m January for new
offices.
The council discussed purchasmg the land to
build a conununity gymnasium. The city now runs
sports events m the Lincoln School gym. which the
school plans to convert mto classrooms to accom-
modate its growmg student body.
·There are other ~ for tllese dOilars, Cfty
Manager Kevin Mwphy said. "I'm concerned that
we would take all these dollars and put them
toward one use when other options are available ~
He said the Lmcoln School may use the gym as
classrooms for only a few years, so it could become
available for sports after that. He added that the city
might be able to use the Boys & Girls Cub in East-
Council member Norma Glover suggested buy-
ing the property, which Murphy said was appraised
at about $800,000. and ask the community to raise
enough money to build the gym.
But she and council member Jean Watt cast the
only votes in favc-r of that idea.
The Newport decision comes a week after Costa

In that case, Irwin will stay hoine and work in
his shop, hand-carving fish, shells, sandpipers,
ducks, "whatever I feel like doing." By 9 a.m.,
breakfast is served.
Irwin, a lifelong bodyswf er who knows the

While Irwin no doubt played in a different era,
he still holds an athletic distinction at Newport

varsity letters from 1932 through 1936, when he
grad~ted.
•Now days," he said, "there's specialization,
and the opportunity isn't quite there as much.
There are too many demands in the sports you

When the long gray line began for Newport

of football's founding fathers.
Irwin also served as a naval officer during
World War ll. Among his assignments was flight

nation's most renowned aircraft carriers in the
South Pacific. Irwin was a member of the carrier
when the Japanese surrendered.
Irwin had been an assistant football coach at
