salaries could go up on Mon-
day.
After two months of nego-
tiations, the Qty Council is
expected to OK a three-year
contract with the Costa Mesa
Police Officers Assodation
that increases salaries an
average of 1.61 o/o this fiscal
year.
The first-year increases are
• 79% for officers, 2.92% for
sergeants and 2.1 % for lieu-
tenants, said Steven Hayman,
director. That means $43 to
$17J more a month for offi-
cers who earn monthly base
salaries of SJ,•94 to $6,380.
Under the agreement, the
second-and · third-year
changes depend on median
salaries for officers in sur-
~ounding cities and other fac-
tors, Hayman sai<i.
The association accepted
the increase Wednesday, said
Costa Mesa police Sgt. John
Phenin, president of the 141-
member union.
·we were able to come to
an agreement with the city,"
he said. •Negotiations went
smoothly.•
The raises are effective
retroactively to Sept. 1. The
association did not get raises
last year.
This year's salary hike,
which includes funding for
some retirement provisions as
well, will cost the city
$184,500, Hayman said.
At the end of the next fiscal
year, the salaries will increase
largely in accordance with
the median police pay in
Newport Beach, Santa Ana,
Fountain Valley, Huntington
Beach, Irvine and the Orange
un e s en.
Hayman said the goal is to
stay competitive with sur-
rounding agencies and retain
quality employees.
"As long as we can afford
that median wage, we will
continue to do so," he said.
Upper police manage-
ment, such. as captains and
the chief, were not included
in the salary hike. They are
expected to renegotiate in
October.

G oing back a couple of
weeks, Balboa Yacht
Qub's Dave Ullman and
crew once again showed their
domination in the Melges class
by winning the 1996 Melges
Nationals.
Sailing with Pease Glaser,

Steve Shaw, the crew posted
four firsts, a second, a fourth and
a seventh over the three-day
series.
Held at the Alamitos Bay
Yacht Qub Aug. 23-25, the
eight-race series featured heavy
breeze and some pretty stiff
competition, 1ncluding"Davtd
Chapin, Joe Landrigan, Don
Jesberg, Vmce Brun, Steve
Grillon and buddy Melges.
The regatta was split into
amateur and open, thought both
fleets sailed together.
Ullman and crew, sailing in
the open class, won the regatta
overall by 6.5 points.
Sailing in 15-20 all weekend,
Ullman had won the regatta
before its end, opting to sit out
the last race.
Other local competitors
included Newport Harbor Yacht
club's Bruce Ayres, finishing
seventh in amateur, and Bahia
CorinJhian Yacht Club's Mark
Gaudio.

Newport Harbor YC's Howard
Hamlin, with crew Mike Martin,
recently decimated the fleet at
the 505 North Americans held in
Kingston, Ontario -posting
scores of 1, 2, 1, 3, 1, 1.
The victory comes on the
heels of his second place finish
at the 505 Worlds, held in
Townsville, Australia.
A favorite in the 505 class,
this Long Beach resident now
has three North American titles
under his belt.

Mustangs, 15-2, 15-5, 15-8.
Costa Mesa, wearing their new white, blodc and
forest green uniforms, got some strong play from Julie
Collett and Kim Daniels. "TIUs was probably our sec-

said. "We knew this would be a tough one, but we
expect to be 5-1 beading into league play."

• Orange Coast water
polo appears to be on
solid footing in Oeding's
second time around
with the Pirates.
By Jim Walters, Daily Pilot
COSTA MESA -Chris Ceding
finds himself in the enviable posi-
tion of having some decent num-
bers to work with as he starts his
second season coaching the
Orange Coast College men's
water polo team.
·we had 25 players come out
the first week and have trimmed
down a little bit to 20," Oeding
said. •1t would probably be easier
to work with 15, but I'm not com-
plaining at ,..all...._ __
·we're going to be able to mix
and match to find the right chem-
istry. That's a ~mfort I didn't have
last year."
Last season , the Pirates were
an all-freshman bunch from their
head coach on down.
Despite their lack of experi-
ence, the Pirates ran off a three-
garne winning streak toward the
end of the season that propelled
them into the Southern California
Regional Playoffs with a 11-17-1
overall record (5-7 in the Orange
Empire Conference).
The talent on this year'l fresh-
man class is pretty impressive
with local standouts Ryan lhndy
(Costa Mesa High) and Mike Bise
