the show of support.

In the first trial stemming from

Newport Harbor goalie Jon Pbarrts forces his Lang Beach Wilson foe to th.lnk again before shooting as Sailors' Luke Alvarado
(10) gives chase ln Tuesday's nonleague water polo duel at Harbor. Long Beach Wllson proved superior, taking 7-3 decision.
Newport Harbor absorbs
a 7-3 lesson at the hands of
Long Beach Wilson's Bruins in
nonleague polo match Tuesday.
By Richard Dunn, Daily Pilot
NEWPORT BEACH -While its defense
showed-tligns of greatness, Newport Harbor
High's water polQ team could still use more
time in the varsity classroom following its
season-opening setback Tuesday against
CIF Southern Section Division I rival Long
Beach Wilson.
•They're first-year varsity players ... very
naive,• Sailor Coach Bill Barnett said of his
players, after the visiting Bruins broke open
a close game in the second half to earn a 7-
3 nonleague victory.
Barnett's green players, however, learned
quickly about the intense rivalry between
Newport Harbor and Wilson's Bruins,
ranked No. 2 in the Division I preseason
poll.
After the game-ending buzzer, Wilson
goalie Nick Hill tossed the ball at a Newport
player's head, resulting in a one-game sus-
pension levied by the referee.
Though the Sailors committed 10
turnovers in the first half and failed on all
four man-up opportunities, their highly dis-
ruptive defense, led by James Person's two
steals, kept them in the game.
Wilson's Peter Joseph scored 20 seconds
into the game, the only goal of the first half.
Early in the second half, Wtlson's Albert
Garcia, with his white cap ripped off his
head. maneuvered around Newport defend-
er Chas Leeper and fed teammate Ryan
Brown for the Bruins' second g~.
from long range with 3:16 left on the tbird-
quarter clock -the team's first goal ~f the
season. But the Sailors would never get
closer.
Wllson's Sean McEachem scored 13 sec-
onds later on a six-on-five situation, the first
of f()ur consecutive goals for the Bruins, who
built a 6-1 lead ln the fourth quarter.
•(The Bruins) got some very easy goals,·
Barnett said. •They're very physical and we
didn't match-up well. They're very experi-
enced and we made naive miltakes. •
1be Sailors, led by goalie Jon Pharris'
eight saves, added a goal by Paul Park with
1:15 rematntng in t6e game, when-Park
reboundiad a •mtned lbOt..oo-goal and used
Harbor's Matt Moreau Iiams a shot past Wilson's Sean McEachem for a goaL
a soft touch to get it past Hlll.
1be Bruins had three playen ejected dur·
lng Newport Harbor's final offensive series,
giving the 1ars an untroubled six-and-three
advantage, which was converted by Luke
Alvarado. It was Harbor's tint man-up goal
in seven advantages.
•1n our transition from deleme to offense,
we didn't a.nt:ldpate them taking the ball
away from us,• Barnett Aki ol hb team's 19
turnovers. "They bad a lot ol breakaways,
and we were very sporadic oo defense. We
would play defense for a while, then go to
sleep."

Recent women's
triathlon in and around
the Back Bay proves to
be ~ big success
By Richard Dunn, Daily Pilot
NEWPORT BEACH -For
many of those who spend
countless hours sweating in a
fitness center, only to find little
use for their newly sculptured
bodies outside the gym, Sun·
day's triathlon was perfect.
"It gives people something to
do, rather than just come into
the gym and get sweaty,• said
Donnell Johnson, Director of
Personal Training at 24-Hour
Fitness in Costa Mesa.
Johnson, who goes by
.. Dee,· formed five relay teams
(15 total members) for the inau-
gural Women's Triathlon along
· the Back Bay, an event started
by Newport Beach's Kimberly
Wilmot.
J ohnson's "club within a
club" participates each month
in something different, usually
a SK or 10K run, to break up the
monotony of daily-grind exer·
cise and diet.
"They absolutely, positively
loved it," Johnson said. -For a
lot of them, it had been 15 to 20
years since they had ·been
involved in something with a
team, a sporting event. The
length was perfect, as well as
the organization.
"Our (participants) are still
talking about the war stories,
how they were whining and
kept going, or their shoe got
untied, or had stuff in their eyes
and kept going. You see the
look in their faces, and you can't
wait to do it again."
According to Wilmot, the
executive director, 112 women
participated in 10 divisions, led
by Amy Valinsky-Fillipow, a 27-
year-old Long Beach woman
who finished Cirst overall in
1 :03:15, followed by Jean Har-
vey ( 1:07:11) and Kim Rouse
(1 :07:31).
The 30-34 age group had the
largest number of participants ..
In the 20-24 division: Costa
Mesa's Carrie Appell won in
1:15:14. Jackie Huffman of
Newport Beach was second in
the 35-39 division (1:16:13),
while Newport Beach's Lisa
McGhee was fourth in the 30-34
division (1 :20.27).
Relay teams had four divi-
s10ns: Family, friends, corporate •
and disabled. Julie Vogt (New-
port Beach) and Jodie Kenny
(Costa Mesa) won the Friends
Division, with Kenny handling
the biking and runrung duties.
Johnson, who has been oper-
ating his "club within a club"
for about a year, trains about
80% women at 24-Hour Fitness.
-w omen are more· concerned
with (needing personal train-
ing)," Johnson said.
Wilmot plans to keep the
event here, as well as expand to
San Diego and Ventura coun-
ties.
Her newly formed program,
the Women's ]'riathlon Club,
will meet Oct. 15 for the first
time. (Call 723-1479 for details.)
"It's for structure and inspira-
tion to support women fulfilling
their dreams (in fitness),•
Wtlmot said of the group .
Escorting the. tail end of the.
Women's Triathlon were mem-
bers of the city's police and fire
departments, as Orange Coast
College physical education
instructor and celebrateCt triath-
lete Barbara Wright rode in the
caboose with 66-year-old Marie
Earl, the last competitor to cross
the finish line (2:36:08) Sunday.
