West ~ide fun, interesting
My husband and I live in the West
Side and absolutely love our neigh-
borhood ("Residents gwe input on
West Side',• Oct. 30). Since relocating
from a very white-collat commuruty '
with ass~ssments, a •stepford• men-
tality that every home must loo!( the
sam~. and neighborhood parks that
no one used except for the nanrue·s
and dog walkers, w~ have found the
d1ver~1ty and tolerance of the West
Side 1nspinng, interesting and fun.
We support 100%·plus the 19th
Street bridge, unprovements to agmg
mlrastructure, and stepped-up code
enforcement. What we don't want lo
see ts a bunch of houses with red-tile
roofs, beige or pink stucco, and a
push to move out the residents m the
area who provide the labor support-
ing the industry that is all around us
"(he eclectic environment is much
more desirable than a ·theme park"
mentality that we see sprouting up in
the overbuilt, trendy retail establish-
ments. ·
I encourage those doing the plan-
rung for the West Side to keep the
identity of the area unique. We
already have the South Coast Metro
area, tho Tnangle
.Square/Borders/Possible-Resort-

valuable rehabilitation of the Harbor
Center.
Focus on the coastal proxuruty
and wbdt that will mean to the value
o! Costa Mesa, not the sales-t.a.x-gen-

thank you to the city tor the attention

In defense of McOung
McClung didn't gel nedrly
enough press! (Mailbag-
"McClung gets too much press,"
Oct. 24). •
The issue here is that an Ameri-
can citizen was unprisoned and
harassed by a foreign government
who:.e ofhc1als live to extort money
from foreign vtsitors such as Arne~
cans, who everyone knows are the
richest. ·
McClung and other similar vtctims
should keep getting press until
someone in Washington, D.C ., takes
note and does something to restore
the status that Amcnc-ans once had
m foreign countries.
If Israel can hold up neg®ations
with a country that cannot or will ·not
take steps to protect Israeli citizens,
then maybe the United States should
take a lesson out of that book and do
somethmg to guarant~e protectton

Bill was standing near the
