Speaking in a meek voice

demanding "payments" of sex

Under questioning from

molestation began during play

and it progressed to sexual inter-

She said her father demanded
sexual "payments• if she wanted

•Basically if I needed anything
or wanted anything, (the sex) was
in return: she said. ·He would
call it 'payments' ... If I got a 'D' or

Readers have little tolerance for underage
r . ...
Keep the zero tolerance pol-
icy. lb.is policy is not too
b4rsh. Why do we want to
aDow or condone the youth of this
~tion to break the law no
DMt~er how petty the ottense
migflt be?
Many children today grow up
learning how not to take responsi-
bility for their own actions. As in
the case of the 17-year-old
Estancia. student who was in vio-
lation of the school district's zero
toleJ:ance policy, not only was she
in violation of this policy, but she
was also in violation of a Califor-
nia state law making it illegal for
anyone under the age 21 to con-
sume alcoholic beverages.
What's up with her father
defending or condoning this ille-
gal and unhealthy activity? How
much is he really trying· to help
bis daughter by saying that it is
OK and we will try to get you off.
Where has he been? How much
I
might prevent her from receiving
an athletic scholarship. Shouldn't
she have considered this before
drinking the alcohol?
The family's attorney said she
wasn't drunk nor did she give any
other students alcohol as if to
lessen her offense. Laws and poli-
cies as in this case are made for a
purpose, to keep children from
banning themselves and/or oth-
ers. If they know that they will not
have consequences for their
actions why not go do something
"fun" and illegal, while they
think "the law doesn't apply to
me" or •daddy can get a good
attorney and will sue.•
What are these people teach-
ing their cbildrenJ Maybe a lot ot
student athletes do dJ:ink. but this
does not make it right for others to
do and use this point as an
excuse.
Please do not change this poli-
cy. I think these students need to
know how alcohol and drugs can
effect the rest of their life as in this
case where the young lady might
not receive her athletic scholar-
ship.
Take a look at the profession-
al athle~ and how alcohol can
be a career ending nlistake. Stu-
dents and their parents need to
wake up and realize that they are
responsible for their own actions.
I was a victim of a drunk dtiver
and oh how that has changed the
life of my husband. children and
me. I I<:now rn~st young _people
pen to them. I thought the same
thing until I found myself waking
up in a hospital with a career-end-
ing injury and two years of
painful, physical therapy and
speech therapy. Please consider
not changing this zero tolerance.

would weaken them and do a dis-
service to our kids.
They need to be accountable to
the rules and regulations that
'govern society. In effect. this is
one that has been put into effect
and served the community well. U
the kjds are going to drink, then

H you have a rule, you must
abide by the rules for all. Other-
wise, it has no meaning so my
vote is tolerance means obey the
rules and if you break the rules
have a lot more meaning if we
enforce all our rules all across the
board.
KARL BERGHEER

Yes I think the zero tolerance is
too harsh. Nothing is black or
white. There are extenuating cir-
cwnstances in many situations
that these issues be handled at
the local level.
Zero tolerance has not shown
itself to be a deterrent to this
behavior. Education suspension,
I think zero tolerance is a good
rule. The kids are aware of it. If
exceptions wen made it would
no longer be zero tolerance would

Parents should stop makjng
excuses for their children. They
have to learn and sometimes it's

Not all high school students

So how did yo~ spend your swruner vaca-
tion 1 A fairly standard question this time of
year. And that's the question we put to our
readers during the final, fleeting days of summer.
The results were impressive. Families went to
Hawaii, the East Coast, Indonesia, Holland and
Alaska. Some just stayed home and still had fun .
While space doesn't permit us to run all the
wonderful and varied photos we received, here's
just a few of the others who shared their ,vacations
with us:
Joel Klassert and Mary Maveety of Newport
Beach rode their Harley Davidson up the coast to
Seattle ... Michael and Jacqui Kirschbaum of Cos-
ta Mesa took an Alaskan cruise ... Suzarme Luck
and her' husband took a hildng holiday in Vermont
and Qu~bec ... Char and Ron Jolly of Newport
Beach went sailing in the British Vrrgin Islands ...
Victoria Solinger of Corona del Mar made it to the
Olympic games as well as New York City and the
Atlantic seaboard ... Barry Zank, his ·brother and
their father went fly fishing on the St. Joe River in
northern Idaho ... Dorothy Silva visited a cottage
in Kentucky that her grandfather built in 1904 ...
We will continue to run vacation pictures as
space permits.

SCARING UP SQME KIDDIE 'fAbES
young fans of

By Lisa O'Neill, Daily Pilot
NEWPORT BEACH -In the
terror-ific tales of RL. Stine, chil-
dren find,eggs covered with
•ugly blue and purple veins,"
tum their siblings into rabbits
and tease each other about what
~hanging from their noses.
Not exactly Dr. Seuss. ~ But as author of the 51 books
that comprise the "Goosebumps"
~es. Stine has developed a
ctill-like foUowing among young
children who talk excitedly about
works called "The Abominable
Snowman of Pasadena,• and
·aad Hare Day,• who sport
•Goo5ebumps" hats and who
willingly attend so-called "dis-
cussion groups."
While Stine's stories may be
filled with barking and headless
ghosts, attacking Jack-'0-
Lantems and regular old mon-
sters, parents and teachers alike
applaud Stine for getting chil-
dren to enjoy books.
•Anything that will get them
interested in reading is great,"
. . . f Huntin ·
ton Beach, who took her 10-year-
old son, .Brian, to a "Goosebumps
Club" meeting at Barnes &
Noble at Fashion Island.
The bookstore is one of many
that offers such clubs, where kids
gather to listen to a ·Goose-
bumps" story, answer questions
and draw fiendish ghouls and
blood-sucking monsters.
On a recent Monday, nine
children -ranging in age from
about 6 to 10 -crowded around
Nicole Garcia, a 22-year-old
Barnes and Noble supervisor
who read chapters from •Attack
of the Jack-'0-Lantems (No. 48
in the series.)

the youngsters munched on

and sat silently, enthralled at
their favorite author's chilling
words.
Later, Garcia drew a name
from a bag and picked a child to
~ . , .,,t,,,,,,,
answer a question about the plot.
"What was Drew dressed up
as?" she asks a young boy sitting
near a bookshelf.
Seconds pass.
The youngster looks up to the
ceiling and then down to the
floor.
He fidgets with his fingers and
squishes his face, as if that will
help him remember.
"I don't know," he says shak-
ing his bead in defeat, knowing
full well that he just missed out
on a prime opportunity: the
ance o wm a ree oose-
bumps .. book, a prize possession
among the elementary school
crowd.
Barnes & Noble has been the
site of the club on the first and
third Monday of the month for
more than a year, Garcia said.
Sometimes, 25 or more children
show up, eager for their chance
at a free book.
•(lbe books) are kind of sick
and twisted," Garcia said. But
that's why1he-children like them
so much, she added.
"They want to read all the
books." Sheena, a precocious lit-
tle blonde girl in a plaid outfit,
had no trouble telling a stranger
why she liked the books.
•I like 'Goosebumps' because
they're scary and fun to read,"
said Sheena, explaining her
favorite book was about a magi-
cian who turned someone into a

Eight-year-old Connor Childs
of Newport Beach is such a fan
of Stine's he got a ·Goose-

wore it proudly to the meeting.
"They're scary books," he said
with a shy grin.
"I read ·Goosebumps books

The Sailors were better in
some areas last week than even
Brinkley expected. And this from
a coach known for opening-night
success (eight straight wins).
"I was real happy to see (Cos-

League performer managed to mix in 135 rushing yards and one TD
on 27 carries with his defensive heroics.
He also fielded three Mike McClellan pas~s for 24 yards, more
than half the receptions he totaled in 13 games last year.
"I think playing defense will actually make him a .better runner,"
said Tony Naranjo, CdM's backfield coach. "I don't think he realizes
how powerful he really is, so occasionally he'll let a 160-pound
defensive back take him down. But once he realizes he can go
through people on defense, I think he'll carry that mentality over to
offense." -
O'Meara's mentality last year was simply to cover the shortest
