NEWPORT BEACH -With
edily ballot results m Tuesday,
incumbents Judy rmnco dJld
Serene Stokes were ahead of
their opponents Kathy Schwal"2
and Tom Szulga.
With 11 or 174 precincts
reporting, Franco held a o5%
lead over Szulga, who got 17% of
the votes in his race for Newport
Beach's TI'\lstce Area 5 seat': The
gap between the two Corona del
Mar candidates wasn't nearly as
wide, with Stokes getting 55.4 ~o
of the votes and Schwarz 44 %.
"It looks like it's picking up,"
Stokes s ·a. •t feel really good. I
hope this is a trend that contin-
ues."
• Schwarz, who went to bed
after· the absentee ballot results
came out, said she felt at ease
about the election.·
"I'm very proud of my ca •
pa1gn," Schwarz said. "What will
be, will be."
Although at the oul.,et of the
elections, there seemed to be a
groundswell. of support for get-
ting some new blood on the
board, satisfaction with the status
quo seems, for now, to prevail.
Low test scores and decdymg
buildings in the school district
were strong urguments used by
Schwarz and Srulga in cdlling for
Ute incumbents' ouster. . f
But in their favor, the incum-"
bents had sc•lected a popular
superintendent who in d short
time has already mdde sigruhcant
changes 1n the d1 lrict's opera-
tions and attitudes.
