So ·the OCC Theater
Department's decision to pre-
sent "The Little Sister," a stage
adaptation of Raymond Chan-
dler's 1949 Philip Marlowe
mystery of the same name, is a
savvy move.
Directed by OCC theater
professor Alex Golson, the play
runs in the Drama Lab Theatre
Nov. 13-15 and Nov. 18-22.
Curtam is set for 8 p.m .
Wednesdays Uuough Saturdays
and 2 p.m. Sundays.
Golson p lays it cagey .when
asked why he chose the show:
"I've always wanted to do a·
mystery and I've ~ever done
one." ·
Never?
"I did Sherlock Holmes once
down at Laguna Playhoust?,"
he said. "I was looking for dif-
ferent types of mysteries,
maybe an Agatha Christie. And
then this one came out and I
like Raymond Chandler better
than any mystery writer.
"It's brand new; just been
released."
The adaptation is by Stuart
Gordon and Carolyn Purdy-
Gor~on of The Organic Theatre
m Chicago ..
"They're the same people
that did 'Bleacher Bums,'" Gol-
son said. "l')ey're mostly comic
and I think rhat they may have
treated this as a com"edy when
they did it. You could easily do
ll that way, with some of the
lines. But we chose not to. We
chose to keep it real."
Golson's respect for the
genre is genuine. It -and his-
motive for doing the show -
probdbly comes from a Detec-
tive in Fiction class he took last
semester He read a lot of clas-·
sic and contemporary works
during the course, and redis-
covered his love of Chandler.
Along with Dashell Ham-

Along the way, Chandler
created Marlowe, the archetyp-

constant struggle to bold on to
his battered morals m a corrupt
world reflects some of the exis-
tential angst of the-modem
age. Or at least that's what
some egghead college profes-
sor might tell you.
Nothing's ever easy in this
world and presenting a Mar-
• lowe story on stage comes Wlth
built-tn challenges. Audiences
have certain expectations when
it comes to a noir piece.
"It's a definite style,• Golson
said. •And it's hard to translate
fllm norr to stage. We're keep-
ing the setting (by Ddvid
Scaglione) black-and-white
and the lighting {by Rick Gol·
son) is very harsh, with lots of
Venetian blind eff ts and
things like that."
The look extends to Cynthia
Corley's costumes: Although
not black-and-white, the colors
are very subdued, and the style
is period penect.
Of cowse, the cast is m on
