Finding vi.rttire in gays and

N m satanlaJ, JM.Elec-

County ot Orange will
bold its annual awards dinner
at the Hyatt Regency Irvine,
and I was invited.
I can't go, and I'm especial-
ly sony about that because the
speakeis are the co-authors ot
a book called •perfect Ene-
mies: The Religious Right, the
Gay Movement and the Poli-
tics of the 1990s. • The timing
for such a subject is just right,
and I'd like to hear what they
have to say .
The bias, of course, is obvi-
ous. The group is Orange
County's lesbian/gay political
action committee. But it is also
obvious the topic needs exam-
ining. Nowhere is the opposi-
tion to the gay members of our
society more focused, more
vocal and -yes -more hostile
religious right, who profess to
embrace love as the corner-
stone of their faith.
In this area, at least, they
seem to have the enthusiastic
support of our politicians at
every level. Our governor is
trying to use his regulatory
powers to prevent the adop-
tion of children by gay couples
because such adoptions, says a
Wilson spokesman from
Olympian heights, •are not in
the best interests of society."
Meanwhile, in the nation's
capitol, Congress has passed -
and President Clinton signed -
the Defense of Marriage Ad
defining marriage as a union
between a man and a woman
and giving each state the right
to decide whether it will give
legal recognition to same-sex
marriages.
And the greatest irony of all
is the most belligerent sup-
porters of anti-gay legislation -
in addition to those who sup-
port it on religious grounds -
are the same people who
whine the loudest abOut the
interference of government in
the private lives of our citizens.
So go figure.
