For a long time, or what seems like a long time, ever since that ridiculous word came into vogue, I thought it referred to a type of dunce who sat in a comer and made bad jokes to himself. Who would have thought that a stub- by-sounding word like pundit could actually describe a "learned man" or, even more sur- prisingly, that we could have so many of them in today's world? I suggested to Frankie that we consult my trusty ol' college dic- tionary for an accurate definition. "Careen: 1. to move rapidly and in an uncontrolled manner; to lurch or swerve in motion." That was pretty much what I had expected, but there was a disclaimer after definition No. 1 which noted "this usage is still disputed by some and is accept- able in that sense to only 63 per- cent of the Usage Panel ... the minority would restrict 'careen' to ... nautical usage."
