Some came from humble beginrungs. scratdung and
clawing to get ahead. Others we re born into
wealth, but rather than loll in luxury they forged
new endeavors. Some were born leaders. Others
simply follow.ed their faith.
So it is that one man turned a lima bean farm into the
jeweled city of South Coast Plaza or that a former grade
school teacher became one of the most respected politicians
in the state. And it i5 Americana
through and through that a
small-town kid with good man-
ners and good humor would
become mayor.
But how to decide who wields
the most influence? How to
decide whether a chef has more
clout than a county supervisor or
a police chief or a football coach
That's the challenge we faced
in compiling the fourth annual
Daily Pilot 103, a listing of the
most influential people in Newport Beach and Costa Mesa.
We checked our sources, rang up community leaders.
talked with readers and conferred with our reporters.
The goal was to pinpoint those who had .the ability and
courage to affect change. The search took us on a zigzag
journey through various segments of the commuruty
It's important to remember that the list is intended to be
taken in the spirit of fun. No doubt we left many off the list
who deserved to be there. And we probably included some
who might raise an eyebrow. The best prescription. we
think, is to read, enjoy and let us know what you think.
The rest of our choices start on page 6.

The Daily Pilot 103 list also has a serious and poignant side. Last year,
we retired numbers 104 and 105 in memory of police officer
4BOb Henry and water polo player Gray Lunde. This year, we sadly retire
two additional numbers in honor of two community heroes.

Love bas publicly aired complaints
about the Executive Collectibles Gallery's
auction planned for this weekend. Person-
al items that belonged to her late husband,
Kurt Cobain, are set to hit the block there
among 1,150 pieces of celebrity memora-

Some lucky bidders in the Best of Rock

Cobain led alternative band Nirvana
before killing himself in 1994 after a long
battle with heroin addiction.

Gallery President William Hughes
expects the event to draw about 500 people
over Saturday and Sunday and bring in
about $2 million.
Hughes said he got the Cobain pieces,
which originally came from Cobain's room-
mate, from another auction. Each piece
comes with a certificate of authentication,
be said.
He added that he did show some
restraint in choosing the items: He turned
down a spoon Cobain reportedly used for
shooting heroin. "I didn't want to promote
drug abuse," he said. .
He called the controversy surrounding
the items "hysterical."
"It's a gas," he said. "Ith~ been pretty
busy. We're getting lots of calls -lots of
phone bids."
He expects the Cobain items to bring in
about $6,000. Prices should please Cobain's
fans, he said. "The Cobain things are very
affordable items," he said.
Cobain's hair color bottle, for instance, is
projected to sell for $200 to $300.
MTY. along with some local radio and
television stations, covered the auction and
Love's discontent, Hughes said. He has yet
to hear from the outspoken rocker herself,
he said -he only knows what media callers
have told him.
"It's all hearsay right now,• he said. "But
she's welcome to come and bid like every-

Getting a handle on out-of-control words
My 10-year-old SOil.
Frankie, asked me recent-
ly to help d4rify for him
what It melJlt to careen. 1be term
was identified u a new vocabu-
Luy word from a book called "The
Longest Wave,• whlch b1s fifth.
grade class WU reading together.
I was fairly oertAln I bad a
good sense of it. ~was one ot thole words which seemed to
embody in its phonetics the very
bobbing motion it defined. But, I
have learned with the English
language, one cannot always rely
on auditory instincts.
'lake the word pundit -please!
For a long time, or what seems
like a long time, ever since that
ridiculous word came into vogue,
I thought it referred to a type of
dunce who sat in a comer and
made bad jokes to himself. Who
would have thought that a stub-
by-sounding word like pundit
could actually describe a
"learned man" or, even more sur-
prisingly, that we could have so
many of them in today's world?
I suggested to Frankie that we
consult my trusty ol' college dic-
tionary for an accurate definition.
"Careen: 1. to move rapidly and
in an uncontrolled manner; to
lurch or swerve in motion."
That was pretty much what I
had expected, but there was a
disclaimer after definition No. 1
which noted "this usage is still
disputed by some and is accept-
able in that sense to only 63 per-
cent of the Usage Panel ... the
minority would restrict 'careen'
to ... nautical usage." The defini-
tions which followed were all
nautical, as in •to cause a ship to
lean to one side,• etc.
•So, are they saying that only
boats can careen?" Frankie
peggy
normandin
inquired in earnest. "You mean
people aren't supposed to
careen?• .
I was touched by the fact that
my son still thought his behavior
could be policed by Miriam Web-
ster, but I also felt the need to lib-
erate him from bis literal
bondage.
"People aren't supposed to
careen." I responded, •but they
do, anyway.
•Aerobics, for example, is a
recreation devoted almost entire-
ly to human careening.•
I knew that all too well
because I just the other morning
had attempted to participate in
such an activity. Occasionally,
you see, I enroll in an aerobics
class simply to remind myself
why I don't do aerobics. So much
public careening. But that
thought came to me too late on'
this particular morning, at the
very moment the instructor blew
into the room.
How did I know sbe was the
instructor? Because first, she
careened through the door; and
second, she looked just like

Yes, 1 told Frankie, 1 teDd to

which I can, on my bright pink

Back Bay working up a sweat at
my own pace. For a person to
toodle, I continued, is no more
legal in the English language
than it is for a person to careen.
but it is, for me, considerably
more dignified. . .

Bill Sumner said, following bis team's
27-28 victory over the Eagles in the Sea

CdM indeed secured the third (Jen-

Jamieson) and fifth (Llz Morse) places,
while Blair (20:12) and Dubin (20:18)
finished seventh and eighth, respective-
ly, to edge Santa Margarita, the defend-

champion.
•we feared it would be close," Swnner said. •Any time
somebody goes one-two on you, it's tough to beat them. But
we have a good one-two-three punch (with Morgan,
Jamieson and Morse), and also our fourth and fifth runners
are not too bad.•
CdM is ranked seventh in the Orange County coaches'
poll, Santa Margarita eighth.
Santa Margarita, which won the CIF State Division II title
three years ago when Nuanes was a freshman, was ahead . . .
and Dubin passed Kelly to put CdM in front.

Sumner said.

Nuanes' Santa Margarita teammate, junior Dani Rope,

Morse won last Saturday's Woodbridge Invitational in the

the Sea Kings (18:46).
