Local waters yield 67-pound
albiel, SAC holds fifth
annucil casino night.
Blue water anglers might not
want to put away their
tackle for the season yet.
A~cording to Dean Plant,
owner of Angler's Center, at
(949) 642-6662, in Newport
Beach, '167-pound aJbacore was
caught this pa.st weekend by Bob
Ross of Long Beach between
Long Point an9 Isthmus, ip fhe •
calm waters on the inside of
Catalina Island.
Ross hooked into the lone
aJbie while trolling a mi:irlin lure
aboard the private yacht
"Fiesta," while bedding toward
the west end of the island.
Over a decade ago, huge
albacore showed up in· about the
same area and many of
Newport's fishing legends
headed out to these protected
waters to catch the albacore of a
lifetime. Area anglers who land-
ed big lQngfins dunng that early
December run, which followed
an El Nino swnmer fishing
season, were: Captain Tommy
McMillum, Jerry Thompson, Tom
Gray and the late Phil Tozer, one
of the finest anglers ever to run a
boat out of Newport's twin
jetties.
Plant predicts that there will
be a lot of private bodts trolling
around mside the west end of
Catalina Island this weekend m
hopes of locating a school of
these huge longfins. Once an
area where there is a
concentration of albacore
pinpointed, the local fleet from
Davey's Locker and Newport
Landing Sportfishmg will most •
likely send out all-day boats in
hopes of getting on a school of
these record class tuna.
Along the beach there hal>
had a good bite on calico and
sand bass weighing m the
4-to-6-pound class Davey's
Locker spokesman Norris Tapp,
who captains the sporthsher
"Freelance~ on weekend trips to
the-'hot spots, reports that the
bass bite has been awesome on
most trips. Bass dte hitting liv<!
bait and leadhead Jigs upped
with cut squid. It has aho been
the limit count for anglers fishing
over offshore artificial reefs.
Good shallow water rock cod
fishing is also on tap for local
anglers on all day and hall day
trips on the sport boats runmng
out of both Newport landings.
The best bite on reds, smaller
grouper, whitefish and scuJptn is
·taking place m about 150 feet of
water where cut bait and jigs are
accounting for the bulk of the
daily catch.
• To celebrate another great
sportfishmg yectr, the
Sporttishmg Association of
Califorrua will be sponsonng the
Filth Annual SAC Casmo Night,
to be held at the Balboa Pavilion
Friday, Nov. 20
For only $65, sportfisbennen
will be treated to a fun evening
that offers a bountiful buffet,
gambling \vith fnends and
skippers, as well as a chance to
wm so~e great sportfisbing
prizes.
The lughllght of the evening
will be the drawing for a lucky'
SAC angler who will win a 1998
Ford pickup.
In addition to all the great
food and door prizes, a giant
raffle will be hosted by Pete
Gray to benefit SAC

• Good fishing ls awaittng fresh
water anglers at nearby lakes.
Oso Reservotr, (949) 858-9313, is
kicking out good numbers of tro-
phy class largemouth bass.
Radio talk show host Ronme
Kovach· of Huntington Beach
fished Oso earlier this week with
this outdoor wnter and we
combined to catch over 30 bass
m the 3-to-5.5-pound class while
product.ng a new TV show for
the harbor area sports personality.
1'cout fishing at Irvme Lake
has been excellent Wlth lots of
limits posted at the tack.le shop,
while over at the Santa Ana Riv·

shore anglers who are reeling
yood numbers of bows in the 1-
