I were Vf!IY excited to attend a
Buddhist wedding, particularly
having just gone through our
own traditional Jewish one. (It
seems much longer than three
months agol) On the day before
the public wedding a!remony, a
small gathering was held at the
bride's family's house to which
nine (an auspicious number in
Buddhism) monks were invited
as well as close family members
and important elders.
you imagine if foreigners came to • Jay and Pavida gave the
the United States at our work-monks food to increase their
places and just started speaking •merit,• and the monks in tum

and Pavida write out in Thai on a

which has helped us when order-

say the card says. It probably
says •take pity on us, we are stu-
pid Americans with strange eat-
ing habits.~
Despite the confusion and cul·
ture shock, we are finding Thai-
land fascinating. Being a Bud-
dhist society, it's completely dif-
ferent than dllY of the cultures
we have previously experienced.
It is very hierarchical and subtle
in terms of social interactions. I'm
sure it would take a long time for
a farang (westerner) to get used
to the ins and outs of Thai life.
and there are, in fact. many arti·

with the subject. The bit of

Thais do not respond to anger
and aggression.
A major reason for our being
in Thailand in the first place was
Jay and Pavida's Aug. 25 wed-

Hotel in Bangkok. Both Arie and
prominent personage from
among the guests (in this case,
the deputy prime minister of
Thailand -it's like having Al
Gore participate in your wed-
ding} linked them together by
placing joined circles of white
thread (sai monkon) OD their
beads. The bead is the most
sacred part of the body in Bud-

that, while their individual iden-
tities are retained, their destinies
are eow linked together.

continued to sit with their heeds
linked together, they held their
bands (palms together) over
arrangements of flowers as the
guests came up one by one and
poured sacred water over their
ban& and offered a blessing.
Water, as in most religions, rep-
resenis purification and a new
beginning and is one of the four
essential elements of life -water,
fire, air, and earth.
Pavida looked beautiful in her
suit made of traditional Thai silk.
and Jay wore traditional Thai
pants in bright blue silk with a
white shirt.

Following the ceremony, a
cock:tall reception was held in
one of the lnterconttnental's ball-
rooms -about 550 guests attend-
ed. That ts a large number by our
standards, but evidently fairly
typical for traditional 1bai wed-
dings in Bangkok.
Arie likes the housing situa-
tion that Jay's father-in-law has
set up for his four daughters and
their f amilles. He built a lovely
six-story condominium complex
so that each daughter could have
an entire floor tor herself and, her
future family -Pavida's parents
live in the bottom two with the
11 dogs. The complex has a large
pool and garage as well as a
guard and staff.
As Jay pointed out, Pavida's
father has made it so that there's
practically no reason to leave
home. Half of each kitchen's
facilities are on an outside porch

Arie practically volunteered to
move in and then promptly
wrote to my parents asking them
why they hadn't made similar
arrangements for their daughter
and new son-in-law.
Poor Pavida and Jay did not
get much of a break after their
wedding because three days lat-
er we were all driving down to
the beach at Hua Hin together
along with Pavida's friend Jeng,
from Singapore. We spent a
relaxing couple of days there at a
beautiful hotel with a huge pool

a great deal for us (more connec-

Like the synagogue in Singa-

orientation, although the com-

morning, so more people were

The mother of the bar mitz-

championships finals against
unbeaten Foothill, 8-7:
The loss sent tbe Mustangs'
into their third-place gem with
San Clemente.
·we played hard for four
quarters against San Clemente
and it paid off. TIUrd place at
the Sout,b Coast is a real nice
finish for us."
The Mustangs (6-1) trailed
San Clemente 3-1 after one, but
battled back to lead 6-3 at the
half. It was knotted again after
three at 7-7 and both teams
scored two in the fourth to force
overtime.
•The winning goal came real
early on a kickout, • Taylor said.
•Todd Hylton drew an ejection
to give us a 6-on-5. Hunter Tay-
lor took an open pass and
walked it in front of the net. He
shot the ball across the cage for
the goal."
Hunter's brother, Justin Tay-
lor, made 28 saves in the two
Saturday games.

Marcos, 8-7. before falling to
Santa Barbara, 12-9.

• Possession No. 2: Third and
23 at the OCC 13 -Collins is at
shotgun depth, but is sacked any-
way. Coast punts out to the 38
and the Mounties run off gains of
14 and 24 yards, the latter Shine's
second TD, untouched around his
left side.
•Possession No. 3: Third and
12 at the OCC 28 ·Collins fum-
bles another snap, the Pirates
punt and Mt. Sac uses four plays,
Davin King going in after setting
his score up with a 41-yard spin-
ning dash to the OCC 6.
• Possession No. 4.: Third and
15 at the Ml SAC 36 -Collins is
sacked and Coast punts, the
Mounties responding with a 95-
yard march, twice converting on
fourth down, with Mark ·Bishop
doing the honors from a yard oul
The misery was far from over,
there was still the third quarter to
deal with, which found the Pirates
fumbling the ball away on their
second snap of the opening pos-
session .
Mt. Sac rumbled 37 yards over
9 plays; then 3-and-out OCC
punts preceded touchdown pass-
es by backup quarterback Kevin
Seto of 21 and 58 yards to up the
margin to 41 points with still 2:40

you o not ve muc in e way o

method of counting, your hand
reckons to take 7-8 tricks with
spades as trumps, which ia ample
at this vulnerability.

A • If you belong to the school that
believes that a rebid of hearts now
would show a six-card suit, you are
in a pickJe -I.he only possible
alternative, a rebid of two no
trump, is seriously newed. Those
who share our view that, in this
sequence, a heart rebid should
promise no more than five cards in
the suit are lucky. Bid two hearts.
