Following the ceremony, a cock:tall reception was held in one of the lnterconttnental's ball- rooms -about 550 guests attend- ed. That ts a large number by our standards, but evidently fairly typical for traditional 1bai wed- dings in Bangkok. Arie likes the housing situa- tion that Jay's father-in-law has set up for his four daughters and their f amilles. He built a lovely six-story condominium complex so that each daughter could have an entire floor tor herself and, her future family -Pavida's parents live in the bottom two with the 11 dogs. The complex has a large pool and garage as well as a guard and staff. As Jay pointed out, Pavida's father has made it so that there's practically no reason to leave home. Half of each kitchen's facilities are on an outside porch -emmen y prac c or aJ. cooking in Bangkok weather. Arie practically volunteered to move in and then promptly wrote to my parents asking them why they hadn't made similar arrangements for their daughter and new son-in-law. Poor Pavida and Jay did not get much of a break after their wedding because three days lat- er we were all driving down to the beach at Hua Hin together along with Pavida's friend Jeng, from Singapore. We spent a relaxing couple of days there at a beautiful hotel with a huge pool -the DusiVCha-Am Hotel, one of the ·Leading Hotels of the World" where Jay had arranged a great deal for us (more connec- tions). Back in Bangkok after our beach break, we went to the Silom-Suriwong area to check out a place that Pavida and Jay had recommended for a good Thai massage (Bhan Thai on Pat- pong 1). Wow! Like the synagogue in Singa- pore, it has a primarily Sephardic orientation, although the com- munity itself is far from homSge- neous. We were lucky that a bar mitzvah was ta.king place that morning, so more people were there to talk to than would nor- mally be present at a Monda morning service. The mother of the bar mitz- vab, Shirley, introduced herself to me after the service and invit- ed us to the breakfast that was held in the community hall. In · addition to the rabbi, we met several of the long-time Jewish residents of Bangkok, including Michael Eierson, president of the Jewish community, whose father had moved to Thailand from Russia more than 60 years ago, as well as families that were originally from Syria and Iran. It is quite an interesting com- munity and very friendly. There are two other synagogues in Bangkok, a Chabad House and an ultra-orthodox Sephardi com- munity that bolds daily services at the Bossotel Hotel.
