A 17-year-old driver had to be cut out
of lus Volkswagen bus Monday after-
noon after the vehicle reportedly hopped
' an East Side Costa Mesa sidewalk and
hit a tree, a mailbox, a fire hydrant and a
utility pole
But Costa Mesa Battalion Ch.let Jun

teenager suffered in the ordeal were cuts
and bruises. Still, paramedics transport-
ed rum to Western Medical Center in
Santa Ana to be checked for trauma.
Information about his condition was
unavailable at the hospital.
The mcident occurred at 2:28 p.m.
Monday in the 400 block of E. 20th
Street. The teenager was southbound on
20th at a normal speed whe n, witnesses
told police. he suddenly accelerated and
veered to the left. going up a sidewalk.
The bus hit a mailbox, a small tree,
clipped a fire hydrant and then crashed
lllto a utility pole, Ellis said. The impact
threw the driver to the floorboard, which
probably saved lus We, Ellis said
Firefighters and paramedics had to
"surgically remove ... the front of t1'e
vehicle oH him,• Ellis said. The emer-
gency workers shored up the bus and
then used the Jaws of We to pry the
teenager out. It took about 15 minutes to
extricate him, Ellis said.
The crash didn't affect electric or
water service to the area, Ellis said.

the district's cost to continue the
low class mes in those two grade
levels will run about $800,000 on
top of the Sf.1 million ircost this
year. aass size reduction legislation
provides $650 per student enrolled
in a class that does not exceed 20
students per teacher. The legisla-
tion also offers an option where a
district can receive $325 for every
student enrolled in a class that does
not exceed 20 students for half a
new girlf11end.
Atwidng the defente's claims
that the •payments• referred to
household chores, Silbar said,
•Why would you d1scuss your

about having served tn Vietnam.

•This is another war story, and

Facing the jury, defense attor-
ney WJlliam Watson fired back
that the daughter is a liar, and the
evidence was botched through
the •tneputude• of the Newport
Beach Police Department.
·1rs some of the worst police
work I've ever seen,• he said.
Watson aitid.zed the depart-
ment for failing to refrigerate bed-
sheets the prosecution claims con-
school day.
The state money does not, how-
ever, cover the full cost of hiring
dditional teachers · to
implement the program. Newport-
Mesa Unified funds 34.6% of the
program's cost.
According to the district's fiscal
services office, the school district
would earn $382,915 this year if it
waits until the February deadline,
then cuts every kindergarten class
to 20 students -thus implementing
the program only half the year
while being paid by the state for a
fufr year. It would make s.sn,i1s
this year if it cuts every kinder-
garten class to 20 students for half
the day.
Next year, however, a full-day
lower class size in kindergarten
would cost the district $864,630. A
half-day would earn the district
$617,175 because no additional
teachers would be needed.

She looked demure on the stand
She looked young .on the stand.
But look behind that ... Please -
don't let her get her way in this
case.·
Schuster faces 16 felony counts
of lewd conduct with a minor,
including statutory rape and oral
copulation. If convicted, he could
face a maximum of six years in
prison.
A verdict is expected this
week.
Since kindergarten classes are
stacked, each does get the benefit
of two credentialed teachers for
half of their class said Susan
Despenas, the district's director of
elementary education.
But the kindergarten day would
have to be extended an additional
17 minutes in order for the teachers
to be there for exactly half a day, an
extension which would have to be
negotiated into the teachers' con-
tracts, Despenas said.
The school di.strict would earn
$253,.240 if it waits J.!Ptil February
and cuts third grade classes, but
would lose $425,000 next year.
A half-day program in third-
grade would cost the district
$101,530 this year and $691,730
next year because of the need to
hire almost as many teachers as for
the full-day program, for half the
state money.

• Keri Phebus had so much
success early, and so consistently,
she actually wanted to test hersell
against a little thing called
adversity ... and as they say ...
Qy Richard Dunn, Daily Pilot
NEWPORT BEACH -For years, Keri Phebus
won. If there was an award to be given, she won
it. If there was a tennis tournament to be played,
she won it. If there was a prom, she was the
queen.
Finally, Phebus had enough of the good times.
She stepped out in faith, displaying more courage
than any match point in her illustrious amateur
career.
•1 prayed for adversity, because everything
went so smooth,• said Phebus, who soon had her
prayers answered.
Phebus, who faces Jessica Steck of South
Africa in a qualifier today in the inaugural Pacific
Mutual U.S. Women's Challenger of Newport
learned a good lesson -I should have taken carf?
of them sooner.·
Upon her recovery, the wrA Tour had little
mercy. Phebus was beaten and hammered,
pushed around like a rookie. An exhibition in
New Jersey, followed by satellite events in North ·
Carolina and Santa Clara, proved anything but
triumphant for Phebus.
"In Santa Clara, at one point. I realized my

goes through that stage," she said. •Tennis is my
passion, so it's just a matter of gaining momentum
and getting confidence back. Everyone goes
through down times, and this is just my time.·
Phebus, longtime protege of Myron McNamara
before the two split a year ago, lost in the final
qualifying round in North Carolina, then lost in
the first round of qualifying in Santa Clara.
• u•s been a very interesting summer, very
character-building, but I've become a much big-
ger person and I'm learning that's more important
than being a big success,• Phebus said.

She was ranked No. 1 in the nation in the girls
12s, 14s, 16s and 18s, won two CIF Southern
Section individual singles titles for Corona del
Mar High, then became the highest-ranking
junior to be signed by UCLA.
In her junior year (1995) for the Bruins, l'hebus
won the NCAA singles and doubles titles,
becoming only the second woman in NCAA
history to accomplish the feat (equaling Stanford's
Llnda Gates in 1985).
Phebus decided the Women's Tennis
Association Tour could wait. She returned to
UCLA for her senior year, missing an estimated
$50,000 she could have won in the summer of
1995.
But since this y s amp10 ps, m
whid:1 Phebus was upset. in the semi~nals, the
horizon of a pro tennis career became cloudy.
•After I lost in the NCAAs, I had a bout of
dehydration, then I had foot surge.ry and I was out
for two months,• said Phebus, referring to the ' l .
to Phebus' ask-and-ye-shall-receive approach.
Though the problem began earlier in UCLA's
season, Phebus was admittedly ·real stubborn."
Ml had about three plantar warts (on the bottom
of my feet) at the beginning of the season, and I
was told to take a week off to get them removed,•

Where do ·old tournament players
go when they retire from serious
competition? Quite naturally, they
continue to haunt the tournament
soene where they demonatrate they
can st.ill create wonders in the play
of the cards. Sitting South on this
deal from the recent Summer North
American Championships was
Tommy Sanden of Nashville, Tenn.
East's two-heart cue-bid showed
a limit raise in support of spades.
South-took--advantag~.srui.-.a
DeclaNJr won the trump in hand,
ruffed a diamond in dummy and
exited with a low spade to the eight
and West's nine. Afraid that. a
black-auit. continuation would allow
declarer to take the rest of the
tricka, and aruaoU11 to collect EMt-
West's due before declarer could
utilize the clubs, West reverted to
diamonds. That was all declarer
needed.
The jack of diamonds won,
finesse of the jack of clubs suixeed·
ed, declarer was home. Six trump
tricks, two diamonds, a dia,mond
ruff and the king of clube accounted
for declarer's 10 tricks.
