STRIKE OUT THE BAND
At d home game at OCC a
few weeks ago, the Costa Mesa
High School Mustangs were
having a difhcult tune heanng
theu plays. The band was a little
closer than usual to the held,
and the brass and strulg sections
were bnnging the stacliu]Yl to life
with the sound of music.
But the band was asked at
one point to stop playing
because the Mustangs couldn't
bear their maneuvers. The band
whimpered but C'ompbed. '
A little late?r, the band was
happily playing again when on<>

The band did. In fact it left

Man dies while driving,

,
Mesa man crashed mto a signal pole
Saturday after dying of natural causes at
the wheel of lus car, authorities said
Eugene C Greenwood cbed of coinpli-
catiQns from chronic obstructive pul-
monary cbsease before crashing his car,
said Cullen Ellingburgh, Orange County
deputy coroner.
The accident occurred Saturday at
about 8:30 p.m . at the intersection of
Adams Avenue and Albatross Drive,
said Costa Mesa Sgt. Kevin Lovelady.
Green wood had been traveling east-
bound on Adams Avenue through the
Albatross Drive interseation when his car
hit a metal signal pole, Lovelady said.
There were no witnesses to the acci-
dent. Coroners conh.rmed Sunday that
Greenwood had cbed of natural causes.
Lovelady said that had been suspected
because there were no skid marks at the
scene.
Chase suspect abandons
vehicle, evades police
A car chase that began m Santa Ana
ended in Costa Mesa early Saturday after
the suspect abandoned the car and fled
the scene, police said.
Police began following the stolen vehi-
cle in Santa Ana, said Santa Ana Cpl. Ken ·
Gominsky. The chase ended in the
Canyon area on Victoria Street where the
driver fled on foot, Gominsky said.
Costa Mesa police assisted in the
chase, said Sgt. KPvin Lovelady. Police
were unable to catch the suspect and no
description is available, Cominsky said.
WHAT:
A mass mailer sent out
this month by Taxpayers for
Responsible Planning, mah-
ciously referred to in pro-air·
port circles as "The scream-

The 1ront of the flier asks,
"Think

and
superim-

Edward Munch.
According to the inaUer,
which went out to South
County res\dents, the nega·
tive effects of El Toro
include: ruined sleep, toilc
fumes, a trathc nightmare,
poisoned water, a horror for
schools and airborne dirt.
It also warns; people not to
be fooled by "pro-airport
propdganda, • saying that
the county's noise estimates
are grossly understated, that
airline pilot unions c;ay it's
unsafe and that hundreds of
thousands of car trips will be
added to county streets and
frceway:s as a result. ·
THE SPIN:
Taxpayers for Responsible
Planning:
"We stand by everything
in that flier -it's all 100%
true,• said Bill Kogennan,
executive director of the
anti·airport advocacy organi·
zation. "Everything m there
comes out of the county's
own documents."
El Toro Task Force:
•111e flier would be
laughable if it didn't do so
much damage by causing a
lot or people needless worry
and anxiety,• said Barbara
Foster, airport advocate and
consultant.
•Bill Kogerman has a pen-
chant for taking inaccuracies
and half.truths and reshap-
ing them into his own mor-
bid reality."
THE DIRT:
Newport Beach Mayor
Tom Edwards brought the
piece, which he referred to
as the •Hiroshima bomb•
mailer, to last week~ City
Council meeting.
Orange County Supervi~
sor Tom Wilson, who repre-
sents Newport Beach and
South County and who is
opposed to an EJ Toro air-
port, came to update the
council on variou~ county
issues.
•vou know I can't let you
get away with talking about
EJ Toro,• Edwards said,
flashing the inside of the
mailer, which depicts a •red
zone• of airport noise
stretching from Dana Point
to Anaheim Hills.
Because Wil on pubhcly
blasted a mailer sent out by
the Airport Working Group
that resembled -some
thought too closely -a pri·
ority mail envelope from the
U.S. Postal Service, I!dwarc.ls
asked him to coniment on
the anti·anport fher as well.
Wilson said he would take
a look at it but declined to
comment.

A playhouse, too
When Habitat for Humanity
volunteers finished the Sebo
home one day early, they didn't
sit idly by. Instead they took it
upon themselves to build a play
house for the children.
"We finished the house a day
early -so we needed something ·
to keep tl':\e volunteers busy,"
said Habitat spokesman Mark
Roussey.
Projcc;t superintendent Ray
Englt>rt cooked up the plan
which was supposed to remain a
secmt. .
A volunteer told the Sebo
children, who didn't really
understand, but once they saw it
takin~ shape they got the idea
quickly and couldn't c~ntain
thetr excitement.
Volunteer Jerome Blackman
said the idea had been thrown
around all week.
"We had lumber left over at
the end and there we were with
something else to do," Black·
man \aid.
The playhou~e · was started
Saturday afternoon in a mini
Blitz Build and finished by Satur·
day evening as Blackman nailed
the last tiles to the roof.
In le~~ than a day, there was a
miniature version of the Habitat
home s1tt1ng on the lawn
A volunteer sewed curtains
and another donated furniture
for the inside.
Ashley, 5, gave friend Susan-

"I think it'll be a wonderful
addition for the kids,.. Englert
said. ''I'm really glad we had
time to do it."
