who despised her former son-in-law
enough to recruit a •career criminal to
"beat him up" pleaded gill.ltyTuesday to
her tole in d tawdry murder.for-hire
scheme.
Mae Miner, 68, was sentenced to one
year in jaf!L and five years. probation on
e count of conspirdcy to cause great
bodily hdnn, which carried a four-year
m<lximum prison term. She. was also
ordered to pay mor~ than $5,250 in tmes.
Miner originally was charged with
solicitation for murder. She agreed to
plead guilty to the lessor charge as part of
a negotiated agreement between her
atto1'ney, Melvyn Sacks, and the district
attorney's office .
· As part of the plea bargcµn, Miner
admitted she was privy to the plans to
hurt or possibly kill David Leland, 48, of
Capitola, Calif., who had been married to
her daughter, Robin.
Wearing a black dress ·with a scarf
draped around her neck, Miner nodded
m ailirmallon as Superior Court Judge
Gregory Lewis read the complaint
Miner 'was visibly shaken, crying as
she left th(> courtroom. She didn't make

Sedbome on Tuesday, unaware that smoke

A neighbor knocked on her door and told
her ol the clouds of smoke that had filtered
out mto the m1daftemoon air. After cctlling
911 , she and her 16-year-old son, who was
sleeping downstdl!S, ran outside.
"l had no clue that the roof was burning,"
she said. "When I came outside I could see
th<>, smoke." .
Nearly a half-hour later, Goldman was
ilS!-.essing the loss. Fire officials estimdte that
morC' than $100,000 damage was done to
the home cmd another $50,000 in contents
