Bud and I went to USC at the same time but didn't travel in the same circles. Bud was a star on the swimming team. I was not on that team. Hell, in high school it took me three years to earn a letter on th"e Class C swimming team. I first met Bud during the late 50s or early 60s. He was already a surf photographer of note. By Jennifer Armstrong, Daily Pilot NEWPORT 'BEACH -City- run sports leagues' days in the Lincoln School gym are num- bered -and city officials are looking for a new site for the popular activities. The Newport-Mesa Unified School District will make class- room space of the current site for city-run gymnastics classes, volleybaU leagues and basket- ball leagues. The district hopes to complete the conversion by next fall to ease overcrowding. And the City Council last month declined to bid on the 16th Street building now hous- ing the district's administrative buildings, which will go up for sale when the offices relocate in January. The Parks, Beaches and Recreation Commission recom- mended buying the district site. But council members didn't want to spend the money for the property, appraised at $800,000. City officials have mentioned the Boys & Girls Club in East- bluff as a possible alternative site for the city sports leagues. But commission chairman Bill Schonlau expressed concerns about coordinating schedules with the many activities that already go on there. . • 1t seems to me that there could be some conflicts,· he said. •How can they possibly accommodate all that in one facility?• City senior recreation man- ager Steve Hunt said that if the activities relocated to the Boys & Girls Club, the club's activi- ties would have prjority over city activities. I told Bud I was going to take a long left right into his camera. 1 could just see myself in one of his films, grinning into the camera. Grand idea. Poor execution. I got the wave I wanted, cleared the crowd, kept in the wave, hanging half out of the water, looking for Bud. I. could- n 't find him. I hung in too. I came to that wretched place where Wedge waves turn into 10 or 12 foot shorebreaks. No one in his right mind would ride there. People do. Broken necks and broken shoulders are the result. Reader says an apology is in order u . Dear Sports Editor .. First of all, 1 would like 'to applaud the Bstand4 Eagle FoOt- ball'INm for puttinq lt all togeth- er. Their •.-0 start in the '96 f~ ball campaign must bave every- one excited about Eagle football. I know all 1lbout the exd&e- ment of a winning football tean(. I am a Costa Mesa High Scbgs>l alumnus, and have rooted for tbe Mustangs through the good tim8s and the bad. We bad a pretty good ride for a couple of y~. and the feeling was electric. I think the time bas come for John .Uebengood to apologtzefo Myron Miller for comments made and attitudes taken after COS,la I • back in 1994. - I remember that John wo n't shake hands with Myron after the game and there were some m feelings weaving their way through the community -where we all share friendships on both sides of the school boundaries. During the Costa Mesa victocy over Estancia in '94, Myron also had his junior varsity players in by game's end. What was he to do? Ask them to fall down? HdW a big victory changes one's atti· tude. '- If you've got the players -play on, if you don't, hold on, and don't give up. I wish continued success for the 1996 Eagles football program, but an apology to Myron is long overdue. • R~, Robert W. ltiCe Costa Mesa Editor's note: Costa Mesa defeated Estancia in 1994, 55-12.
