' Costa Mesa's Bruce Hancock has that up-In-the-air feeling. Estancia girls collect a key victory in their quest for down-the-road honors. By Richard Dunn, Daily Pilot · COSTA MESA -Different, yes. But it's also mandatory for Estancia Hlgh's girls aoss country team to prepare for the postseason -all season. 'D'aining sessions in late summer, invitationals every autumn weekend and Pacific Coast League dual meets on Thursdays are all geared toward a single goal. ·1rs sort of funny, but our whole season. we're training for the postseason, because most of the (PCL) teams are CIP Division I or Division n schools,• said Estancia senior Melissa Inouye, the leader of a tight Eagle pack that outpaced host Costa Mesa Thursday, 26-31, in a PCL dual meet •we're really small and we don't get much . . , citin • added Inouye, whose team (1-1 in PCL) recently finished second at the Bell.Jett Invitational at Grif- fith Park in Los Angeles, and bad third-place fin- ishes at Woodbridge and Yucaipa invitationals. •Laguna Hills, Aliso Niguel and University are huge schools and we don't really aim for them in the postseason (because of different C1F divi- sions), but Costa Mesa and Laguna Beach are teams we really need to beat.• Estancia, ranked seventh in CIP Division N. placed runners second (Inouye), fourth ("Thµya Perkins), fifth (Adriana Vallejo), seventh (Sarah Hall), eighth (Bri7.eida Salgado) and ninth (Omnen Gamboa), though only the top five finishers score. The Eagles ran only six varsity runners on the fiat, grassy three-mile course that encompasses TeWinkle Park and much of the Costa Mesa High grounds. Mesa's Gegi Van De Walker, a junior, won the race in 19:52, believed to be a personal record on her home course. It was Van De Walk· er's first victory of the season. "I was just waiting until I got to the end to pass (Inouye),• said Van De Walker, whose tremen- dous kick blew Inouye away in the final 800 yards, after Inouye had the lead. •Gegi and Jamie (DeNoewer) started out real-. ly fast and that started to scare me, but after a while I got up to the pace,• said Inouye, who led the second mile, before finishing in 19:55. "1 knew-Geghvould plSS11le;-beca""'use-sb ... e"'di"''· d the same thing at Woodbridge toward the end of the race, after I was ahead. I have no kick, and Gegi has an awesome kick. So when I was ahead, there's no way she was worried.• Mesa's DeNoewer was third in 20:32, followed by two more Estancia runners, Perkins (20:57) and Vallejo (21:00). Estancia's Hall (21 :18) and Salga- do (21:21) also scored. "Our team has no real star runner,• Inouye said. •But all of our times are about the same. We all run in a pack together. In cross country, you can have a really fast runner who beat everybody, but if there's nothing from the rest of the team, it does- n't really matter.• Staying together is beginning to matter a lot this season for Estancia.
